    ALMS Final Race

After the final ALMS race in Road Atlanta, the 1.000 mile Petit Le Mans, Porsche retained the prestigious drivers' title in the  GT2 class with the 911RSR drivers  Bergmeister and Long. However, the RSR showing at this race was mediocre or at best very cautious in order to defend their points lead.

In the manufacturers' and teams' titles Porsche were overcome by BMW by a single point. Ferrari were third.

The GT3 R Hybrid finished the race an impressive 18th overall but its participation was outside competition.

Audi took a beating by Peugeot who finished 1-2 Overall.

    Re: ALMS Final Race

I actually watched this on the Porsche micro-site. They had on-board footage from inside the Hybrid.

The car is extremely quick on the straights. It blows any GT2 car out of the water. However, when it gets to the twisty bits, it just cant keep up. Those 115Kg -130Kg negatively effects its handling in such a way that it's overall lap time suffers tremendously.

Porsche has a lot of work ahead of them. Next year is going to be very, very difficult.

    Re: ALMS Final Race

I assume this 4 kms circuit didn't suit the handling of the Hybrid as much as the long Nurburgring. On this long race was there any re-fueling advantage?

We know which manufacturers will take part next year?

Will Ferrari present a 458 based racer? BMW will enter DTM, so will their commitment continue?

Reportedly they were not happy with the setup of the Hybrid and even assumed that the damaged tires were a consequence of that.

    Re: ALMS Final Race

Lets hope Porsche has some significant improvements in store for the RSR next year. Ferrari cannot be too happy this morning having lead at Petit and only to lose the race and manufacturer's championship due to the 62 running out of fuel.

Porsche certainly has a lot more development ahead of them on the GT3 Hybrid, but the intial results from Petit and Nurburgring are encouraging. I look forward to seeing the next generation car after it's lost the 115Kg-130Kg of weight.

It appears Team Cytosport's will not  race Porsche RS Spyder  in 2011 ALMS. Team owner announced to team after Petit. This is not surprizing given the dwindling amount of spare parts Porsche has.

I'm not sure what they mean by damaged tires. There were many tire changes, and the handling did not improve. Set-up could have been partially responsible...but only partially!

Funnily enough, there was no re-fueling advantages. The hybrid made the same amount of pit-stops as most of the other GT2 cars. (in fact the #45 Lizards (normal GT3RSR) made 9 stops against 11 for the hybrid)

Ferrari will be back with their new 458 and Corvette will be back as well. I don't know about BMW. Panoz will return as well and Lotus have announced Gt2 program.

    Re: ALMS Final Race

According to Porsche, they experienced two tire failures in the first hour and assume that this was due to the setup. Smiley

CytoSport Bids Farewell To Porsche RS Spyder

The Petit Le Mans marked the end of an era for one of the sport’s most successful prototypes. The Porsche RS Spyder, which achieved 35 class victories worldwide over six years of competition, completed its final professional race.

Muscle Milk Team CytoSport’s Klaus Graf, Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr battled an engine misfire to record a seventh place finish overall, third in class. While it was a bittersweet result, it had capped off a rather remarkable year for the California-based squad, which finished runner-up in the LMP championship with three wins.

While team owner Greg Pickett had been hoping to continue with the RS Spyder next year, a lack of spare parts appeared to be the contributing reason behind Porsche’s decision to bring its customer RS Spyder support program to an end.

"As I'm sure most people in this industry know, Porsche has come to the point where they need to close the chapter on the Porsche RS Spyder and I understand that,” Pickett said. “I think they really took a lot of time with that decision because it wasn't an easy one... I'm proud of our team, I've enjoyed the season immensely and I look forward to next year. We'll be back, we're not sure with what yet but we'll be here next season."

Ironically, it was Maassen and Luhr who drove the RS Spyder’s first race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2005. The German duo also were part of the lineup of the car’s last outing.
