Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

That is certainly an interesting line-up of new models Smiley

However, personally I expect major difficulties in developing and launching all these new products in such a short time frame. Lotus is probably not the kind of company that can replicate Ferrari's entire model range in just a couple of months... I.e. right now I expect that this endeavor will end in a disaster... Also, while the new market addressed is not big there are alrady plenty of experienced car makers in that niche.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

From what I understand those are only [functioning] concept cars? So there is still enough time and changes until they hit the road.

I do not share the resentment towards the new Elise/Exige, I agree that the character has changed but not necessarily to the worse. Lotus can still achieve an appealing weight with the use of different materials.

6 new cars by Lotus they also unveiled a city car concept probably to rival the AM Cygnet

The Eterne looks a lot like an Aston Martin Rapide to me. The rear lights on the Elite remind me of the Maserati GranTurismo. The rear of the new Elan reminds me of a past Mitsubishi (GTO perhaps?). The dashboard in one of the brown interior shots above could easily have been from an Audi R8 Smiley

Lotus has a great history on the track and a unique character in their past road cars. IMHO Lotus should not copy others in redeveloping its own style Smiley

As MKSGR said, the niche market Lotus is chasing is already well populated Smiley Think Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc.

What Britain does best is to produce lightweight sportscars with really well-balanced chassis set ups that are aimed at having fun on twisty roads and on the track. It reflects the kind of fun-loving petrolheads that we are in this island nation. Think Lotus, Noble, Caterham etc. I fear that the Malaysian parent company, Proton, is forgetting this Smiley

I'm grateful already Lotus is alive and kiicking. Noble and Caterham might not even exist ten years from now when Lotus is a global player.

Porsche whores its own brand by making Cayenne and Panamera. Ferrari prostitutes itself by making a folding hardtop. Lambo sold their soul to the Germans. But what do they all have in common compared to, say, TVR ?

    They're now stronger than ever.

I'd rather Lotus evolve WAY MORE than see it extinct.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Tip of the hat from me, what an incredible company style change. As mentioned above, I too am afraid of these niche markets... Lotus just doesn't have the customer base, so they will have to pull THE BEST ADVERTISING program in history. I honestly, think though that the above concepts are incredible.

My one and only concern is WEIGHT WEIGHT WEIGHT. If they are tech0tech lightweight, it's all good. If they weight 50kg less then competition, we can say bye bye to Lotus. They will die. simple as that.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Looking at their website, i think they are just trying to emulate Tesla, it's sounds very similar.

I think one can see where the design inspiration came from:

From left to right: R8 - Ferrari - Lambo - and a cross over

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

From reading around, the Elan seems to be the favorite and the Elise is the most polarizing look.  All of them are growing on me, though I am not happy about the Elise's weight.

The days of extreme lightweight are over. I'm sure Lotus will still strive to make their new cars lighter than the competition, but it will be marginal IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised if the final product of the Elise turns out slightly heavier than the announced 1095 kg. Although even if it will weigh 1200 kg, it will still be lighter than the Cayman/Boxster etc.

...but definitely not as light as the predecessor Elise.

I also like the Elan the best btw Smiley

In a BIG way!  Great designs. and specs. the more I watch and read the more impressed I am. Will rival Aston for best line-up or maybe beat them easily.

It looks like what Porsche promised with the concept of the Panamera !

The Eterne looks awesome and if produced will take the lead in high end sedans, taking many sales away from the panny. This car below almost looks like some of the well done artists concepts we have seen of a possible 928 return.

Also the espirit is awesome and the Elan is nice. They have also done great interiors and one of the best looking steering wheels.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Maybe this is just to attract some attention and finally there will be only one or two of these cars produced    Who would take the risk to launch so many new cars at the same time, it just sounds too crazy

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

The cars will not be produced all at the same time. The Esprit will be the first in 2013, followed by the Elan and the Elite in 2014 and finally the Elise in 2015. It's really a big step into the future for Lotus but I still don't think it's a good idea to play out all the cards (showing the design and the specs) at the same time.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Interesting alternative to McLaren's MP4-12C! and Lotus has a dealer in my country. Smiley

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Lotus will resign the concession contract of every Lotus dealer in 2012. A whole new network of dealerships will be created. For example, in the UK there are currently 23 dealers, and Lotus wants to cut it down to just 3.

I think we have a overkill of Sportscars these days - wonder who will buy all these cars we get thrown in in these days...

Sure, evolving the product line (e.g. the Boxster and Cayenne) helped Porsche survive which raises the inevitable question: how far can a marque deviate from its original identity and philosophy while remaining true enough to its roots? Surely, there must be a point at which any brand has gone too far? Essentially, survival at any price to one's identity is equally untenable. At the end of the day, this is a subjective judgement call that one can only know was right or wrong with hindsight IMHO.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Lotus cars have always been a little quirky in terms of design and reliability.  Owners accepted the foibles because of the superb handling that connected the owner with the romance of F1 and Colin Chapman's aura. These new cars will inevitably be held to a much higher standard of build quality and reliability  if indeed Lotus manages to attract a new generation of buyers who have no memory of Diana Rigg driving an Elan in the Avengers, or a black John Player Special Europa Twin Cam displayed next to the Lotus F1  in similar livery. Lotus is taking a big gamble with designs, that IMHO, are largely derivative of other marques.
