NIce!  So 480hp without the indiviual throttle body fuel injection of the RSR (ITB's give better power, throttle response, and sound)...

...a quick reprise of the Andreas Preuninger interview by Chris Harris...

    Smiley SmileySmiley

"A few comments from the interview of Andreas Preuninger with Chris Harris at the launch of the Porsche 997.2 GT3 -- which were also repeated at the 997.2 GT3 RS launch event..."

ANDREAS PREUNINGER, PORSCHE MOTORSPORT PROJECT MANAGER FOR 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS, 911 GT2 RS:

Andreas Preuninger: "So, this is the motor -- like on almost every Porsche there's not so much to be seen because it's a Flat Six boxer motor and it lies pretty much hidden... but when you drive it, when you feel it, when you hear it -- that's what it can do best."

AP: "We have a 3.8-litre here -- we enlarged the displacement by 200cc on that car, adding a lot of torque to the engine, adding a lot of bite on lower and middle revolutions... You notice the difference right from the start, because there's so much more torque available between 1500 and 4000rpms -- that's the range you use the car normally in 90% of all street-going traffic -- that's where the car has a lot more bite than its predecessor. It's a lot more torquey, you end up being one gear higher always than in the last car."

AP: "The sound hasn't changed so much... a bit more volume in the sound -- I'm afraid it's got a little bit louder, when the exhaust flaps are open -- but I think our target group will accept that."

AP: "We increased the diameter of the pistons, so the stroke stays the same -- we have 102.7mm of bore, instead of 100mm in the old car and that adds up, on the same stroke, to 200cc more. So we can use the same crank and we just differentiated the rods... titanium rods. Even though the the piston is a lot bigger in diameter, it weighs less than the 100mm piston on the old car -- so we even found some weight despite increasing the diameter of the piston."

AP: "It is still the GT1-based engine with eight bearing points and seven oil suction pumps and a full dry-sump system, like in a race-car. So this is almost a race engine and it's up to any task on the race track."

Chris Harris: So the question I have to ask is why no DFI?

AP: "We wanted to stick with the GT1 motorsport block -- we need it for for homologation, because this is the block we race with and this is a homologation car and it needs the same block as well."

AP: "This car is really set up for race track use and that's why we intend to keep it for one more generation or maybe for even more, because customers love this engine... it has lots of character and the GT3 is all about emotion and character and this is what this engine can do best..."

AP: "We are absolutely sure that performance wise and for durability, this is the best choice for a GT car..."

    Porsche's GT1-based 3.8-litre flat-six, dry-sumped, motorsport-derived GT3 boxer engine...

Interesting, it seems that the blue with black wheels have the carbon fiber front wings. the extensions seems to be integrated like on the GT2 RS on the first shots.

Yes,  that is ONE of at least four differences...

    1. Carbon front fenders

    2. Different taillights- see the four clear LED's?

    3. Different color centerlocks

    4. Different sill/rocker area, either missing or painted.

In fact, it looks like they took liberal inspiration from my car Smiley

Question is, have they fixed the flexy brake calipers that cause the brake pads to wear in tapered fashion (sometimes so severely it won't even trigger a wear sensor warning light before the backing  plate goes into the PCCB rotor!) when tracking? Did they install a LSD (Limited Slip Differential) that doesn't fail in a few hundred miles and have to be replaced with a durable Guard Transmission LSD? Did they fix the coolant fittings on top of the engine that are only glued in and all too frequently pop out and dump coolant on the rear wheels and spin the car instantly?

I am tired of the cosmetic, profit-driven, parts bin engineering and want them to address the problems  inherent in the current design. What say you Porsche engineers and bean counters? Will you step up?

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

The missing sill makes me wonder if it is a real GT3 RS or just a GT3 with the RS wing. The front lip seems to be slightly less pronounced than on the other GT3 RS in the pics.

The rear wheels also seems to be thinner .

    What do you think ?

    ACO Regulations:

ART. 2 - GRAND TOURING CAR "LM" GT2

    2.1 - Eligibility :

2.1.1 - ACO is the only authority to judge the eligibility of a "LM" GT2 car.

2.1.2 - Eligibility criteria of a "LM" GT2 Grand Touring car are made out by the ACO.

2.1.3 - The "LM" GT2 Grand Touring car must meet a minimum of the following criteria :

    a/ To be regularly produced by a manufacturer approved by ACO ;

    • A regular production implies a permanent implementation of the means required to produce a minimum of 1 car per week for the "big manufacturers" and one car per month to the "small manufacturers". If the production is not respected, the ACO will suspend the homologation of the car the year after. The suspension of the homologation will cease once the production delay has been made up. It will be permitted to compete with the car as soon as a minimum of 100 road cars for the "big manufacturers" and 25 road cars for the "small manufacturers" will be produced.

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

Had a chat with my dealer yesterday about this, when i was getting new tyres on my GT3.

He hinted heavily at it coming. Interestingly he had an RS in the showroom that was a customer order that seems to now be falling through as he offered me the car. I got the impression he like many dealers are a little bit pissed about this 4.0 RS as it is causing many customers to cancel / put orders on hold.....

IMO In the short term it is going to maybe dent the resale value of the Gen 2 RS, but i think when the car is launched the 3.8 cars will be just as sort after as this 4.0 block is going to be a lot more expensive and appeal to a slightly different market due to what i anticipate to be much higher running costs.

Dare i say it, but given the nature of the 4.0 engine might the car only be able to be serviced by a select few specialist OPCs ?

That sounds about right. The 4.0L engine used in the RSR, without the ACO mandated air restrictors is estimated to be worth about 510 PS.

I think the version for the public will have no air restrictor but different cams and lower redline to keep it a bit more reliable for a longer useful lifetime.

Is this the actual reason for the rumored 4.0L RS? Didn't the current RSR race car already displace 4.0L? Why is it still speculation that the car will come if the 4.OL car is mandatory for homologation?
I  only wish Porsche released the current RS with the 4.0L  from the start.Smiley

That's why I wondered why there was so much speculation on whether it was really coming or not. It would have appeared a foregone conclusion. I'm just not happy that they would make 2 versions of the latest GT3RS. I feel a bit played by Porsche after ordering the 3.8car thinking it was the last 997 GT3RS iteration.Smiley

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

Went down to the local dealer yesterday, he was friendly enough to let me test drive a 2010 GT3 and Turbo Cab PDK. Having already driven the new GT3 I was happy to be reminded of that car's amazing personality. Having driven the 997.1 Turbo I was expecting to feel a difference with the added power and PDK speed of the 997.2. While the gearbox is amazing, the whole car felt somewhat boring and ordinary after driving the GT3.

To get to the point, the dealer confirmed the GT3 limited edition was coming, probably in the spring, 4.0l engine and ~500 hp. He was hoping to get 1 maybe 2 allocations. I really cannot wait for this car, does anybody have more info they can share?

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

the comments about PDK and its lack of involvement are becoming a bit too frequent..

    O tempora, o mores..

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

So should I lie and say it blew me away? Just reporting my experience. The performance of the Turbo was impressive but for me the GT3 was the better car.

I'm pretty sure that he was referring to the fact that he personally found it boring and that your impressions, as well as those of others, corroborated his view.

I wouldn't expect the RS Limited Edition to be much different to the "regular" RS. (besides the obvious)

Based upon the wholly underwhelming reality of the "secret mid-engine car"- the Cayman R? The RS "LE" is just another parts bin exercise to extract obscene levels of profit from a truffle designation and tripe reality?

I fear this now. And question Porsche's desire to continue real innovation and not just milking a rearrangement of the same decade old parts.

    It is insulting really...

Witness the same old GKN Limited Slip Differentials in the GT3's that become useless after one track day. PCCB that bevel wear their pads so badly the backing plates go into the rotors and the wear indicator never activates, engine coolant fittings that lose their adhesive-only grip, pop out, and spin a driver instantly on track.

Hope they prove me wrong. But so far they simply don't seem to care?
