    Winter Tyres

After nearly getting stranded in a sprinkling of snow last year, I'm thinking of getting some winter tyres.  The main criteria will be grip in cold, wet weather and at least some mobility during the odd snow fall we get here in the south of the UK.  Any advice on which tyres would work well?  Thanks.

    Re: Winter Tyres

    What car ?

Porsche owners should stick to the Porsche recommendations, unless they live in a very snow rich region.

Your OPC should be able to advise you of the content of Porsche's latest Technical Service Bulletin regarding the recommended winter tyre brands/dimensions for your model.

The general view seemed to be in recent winter seasons that the recommended Pirellis were the best option for mixed winter conditions including dry roads and high speeds, and the Nokians best for traction in extreme snow conditions, which you will rarely have for long in the UK.

    Re: Winter Tyres

Pirelli Sottozero's offer the best grip in both snow/wet and on dry, cold pavement. Stay away from Continentals.

    Re: Winter Tyres

Thanks everyone.  I was planning to stick to those approved by Porsche (mine's a Gen 2 Cayman S BTW).  But I know that with the summer tyres that there is a general preference for the Michelin Pilot Sports and I was wondering if a similar preference for a specific tyre had occurred with the winter tyres.

Then you are looking at the Sottozeros for the UK, unless some other maker has come up with something better in the last season.
For Scandinavia or the Alps, some people might prefer the Nokians?

Do you have 19" wheels?  If so your choices are probably pretty limited.  I had a look for my Boxster and could only find the Pirellis in the size for the rear.  There's lots more choice for the 18s.  Good move, btw - winter tyres are excellent.

Bringing up availability is a good point because there won't be stocks of winter tyres in the UK, due to lack of demand.

If you have problems, try this company. It imports the tyres from Germany through its own channels, if necessary, and possibly more quickly than the tyre manufacturers:

    Re: Winter Tyres

I've got 18" and the Pirelli fronts are in stock with distributors in the UK, the rears are currently in production so I should be OK.  Thanks again everyone and now I'm contemplating a second set of wheels.  Anyone have any experience with second hand wheels?  I forsee a fair number of pitfalls but hefty savings...

Don't bother answering - by the time TPMS sensors are fitted a new set is only marginally more expensive from Porsche.  In fact, the Tequipment 18" wheel and winter tyre set is remarkable value by Porsche standards:  £2280 with TPMS

    Re: Winter Tyres

     Hi,

Might be worth pointing out that winter tyres come in a couple of flavours:

    a) those with a tread similar to or slightly more aggressive than summer tyres.  These benefit from softer compounds and added silicates which improve grip in low temperatures and icy conditions

    b) ones with much more aggressive treads which do the above plus cope better with soft snow, slush, etc.

I think that the Pirellis fit more into the first group - if you're looking for maximum performance on packed/soft snow as well, then something like Blizzaks or Nokians are probably better

[I've also bought and sold wheels on auction sites a couple of times.. no probs and quite some money saved.]

    Re: Winter Tyres

I'm going for the Pirellis because what I want is decent performance in the cold and wet (which the UK excels at) and to make sure I'm not completely stranded in the snow.  Bearing in mind how we grid lock in the lightest dusting, crawling home rather than abandoning will be sufficient!

    Re: Winter Tyres

The Pirelli's will be your best choice. I've used them in Canada and we get the occasional snowfall here.

Marcus, I just ordered a set of wheels with 11" rears which I am going to run Sottozero N1s this winter - I presume you run with the 295s on 11"s ? how affected is the traction with the narrower tyre or does the increase stickiness in winter conditions actually make them much grippier compared to our summer 12"/325MSPC combo ? your driving impressions appreciated Smiley

The unfortunate news is that the setup changes very much to the worse... The car gets much more susceptible to throttle impulses (most obviously in fast bends when you release the throttle at bit), gets less precise when entering bends. Traction is quite good though.

Having said the above: the car still feels better then all other cars you can drive in the winter SmileySmileySmiley Even on snow the car can be driven quite nicely as you feel everything the car does / will do shortly Smiley It is just great Smiley

    P.S.: I am using the 295s
