    Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

Haven't been on RT for ages!

Can anybody on here (RC?) confirm the validity of a limited edition GT3 RS - 500 hp, 500 units, delivery June - July 2011?

    Cheers!

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

There is a rumor of a limited production street legal GT3 RS(R) but we have no details yet.

If it comes, it will surely come before summer 2011.

We're still waiting for the Speedster...

Such a car with sequential gear-box would be quite interesting Smiley I know of at least two buyers for this car already (excluding me...)

You mean sequential like the Cup car or PDK?  I think sequential would have limited usefulness on a street car.

It would have to be manual to get me to change !!

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

Yeah, I hope it's manual too.  My only other hope is to win the lottery, so I can afford it

Question: if this GT3 RSR rumour is true, what do current 997.2 GT3 RS or even future GT2 RS owners think about it?

A 500hp GT3 RS would be perfection! They will use the 4.0l from the RSR right?

Not happy. As a someone who waited for the last iteration of the 997.2 3RS before deciding to purchase, I would not be pleased if this car appeared. I would feel a bit shafted by Porsche and it would definitely impact my future buying decisions with them. I think it can't be a good thing for .2 GT3RS values. If it is in fact coming, I can only hope this car  is differentiated and based on the the new hybrid technology platform(seemingly indicated in the speculation pics) as opposed to simply a larger capacity version of the current 3.8RS. Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

I understand your frustration, but I think it's going to happen.  Porsche has never said the RS would be the highest spec for the 997.  Porsche has a 40-year history of making the street-version RSR the top of the heap (it's just been dormant for awhile).

Don't worry, the existence of the 73RSR has not negatively impacted the values of the 73RS...

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

The frustrating part is that this is all still speculation but I've ordered based on the premise that Porsche would not make a more capable version of the latest RS at this late stage of the game in the 997's run. True, nothing prevents them from doing so, but if I would have known-especially at this late stage of the game, I would not have purchased and honestly, feel a bit betrayed. I'm now looking for a possible out since I have not taken delivery. Again, it's still all speculation...Smiley

I understand - If I were in your shoes, I'd be a little annoyed too, but I would act right away to try to secure an RSR spot in case it happens (if that's what you really want)

Seems like Porsche is coming out with ever increasing numbers of " special " versions of their 911 -more than even  Lotus with their Elise/Exige  and Lambo with their Gallardo .  Soon, like these other model lines , there will no longer be a " regular " 911 . OTOH, as they have become mostly an SUV and sedan purveyor , maybe they should just get rid of the base 911 , which isn't selling anyway.

The pricing of this special GT3 would be probably much higher than that of the current GT3 RS - and the GT2RS willl still have some 120hp and many NM more (i.e. would feel much more powerful and also be quicker on tracks and the AB). If looked at it from this perspective there would be no problems Smiley

That is exactly the reason why I still doubt there will be a special GT3 RS version...

So far Porsche did follow a "strict" 3 year model cycle (including facelifts). The last example was the GT2 RS - which is just the FL of the Mk1 GT2 (launched in 2007). Of course, I don't include special versions which just come with better options included/lower price, just to improve sales at the end of the product cycle (turbo S, Carrera GTS etc.).

Also, the question is whether a GT3 RSR would find a big enough market. Probably not - as some picked the GT3, some the GT3 RS and some the GT2/GT2RS. There could not be much room in between.

Another factor to consider are EU regulations... Please keep in mind that all GT2 RS must be sold and registered in the EU by year end. Otherwise these cars could no longer be registered in the EU...

I would speculate that a 500hp (!) version of the 4.0l GT3 engine (similar motor block as in GT2) would face the same restrictions.

Thus, the more I think of it the more unlikely a special GT3 RSR version is Smiley

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

In today issue of german car mag "auto motor und sport", is also mentioned aside to other Porsche news (911 speedster), that a revised 911 GT3RS will top the 997 (non-turbo) line.

By mid of next year, the current 3.8 enigine will be replaced with the 4.0 litre engine as used in motorsport. Power output should be 500hp plus something...

(I could imagine that mid of next year could be interpreted as mid of modelyear, which would be Q1 2011...)

Re: Limited edition GT3 RS rumor

This is really inevitable as Porsche need to do this for homologation reasons.

This is very strange... How can it be possible that a 500hp NA engine (non-DFI, based on GT1 engine block) should meet the EU emission requirements whereas the GT2RS does not meet these requirements Smiley I am a bit clueless. Maybe the AMS report is incorrect Smiley

Also my dealer yesterday confirmed me something about the 4.0 litre 500 HP GT3RS,he talk me also about a sequential gearbox...but on this i don't believe him..

...how about this for some official Porsche Motorsport inspiration?

Porsche Motorsport press release: "The 911 GT3 R..."

Developed for racing series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, the stunning 911 GT3 R succeeds the 911 GT3 Cup S and is delivered to customers ready-to-race. The starting point in developing the GT3 R was the latest 3.8-litre Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which will compete in the 2010 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup supporting selected Formula One races. However, the GT3 R - which weighs just 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) - has a larger 4.0-litre six-cylinder 'boxer' engine delivering 480 bhp and other technical developments designed to improve the performance of the car further still.

For example, an anti-lock braking system, traction control and an electronic throttle with 'blip' function on gearbox down-changes make it much easier for drivers to get used to the GT3 R race car than the prior Cup S model, with the consequence that the new car is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver rather than purely experienced professionals. The main focus with this new car was to deliver even better driveability and easier handling.

Additional flared wheel arches front and rear emphasise the purposeful, wide track of the GT3 R. And like all second generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters. For optimal aerodynamic performance, the underbody of the car is completely covered and features a rear diffuser and, compared to the prior Cup S model, the range of adjustment on the rear wing has been increased.

The highly-developed suspension can also be adjusted extensively; at the front are height-adjustable MacPherson struts with variable SACHS two-way shock absorbers and double coil springs (main and auxiliary). At the rear, the GT3 R features a rigidly mounted sub-frame with a height-adjustable multi-arm axle together with adjustable SACHS two-way shock absorbers and double coil springs.

"Since we announced our intention to launch the 911 GT3 R, demand has been huge," said Uwe Brettel, Head of Motorsport Sales. "The number of GT3 R vehicles we had planned for 2010 is almost sold out."

As the newest Porsche race car, the 911 GT3 R has an incredible provenance. In 2009, the ultimate racing Porsche 911 – the GT3 RSR - won the GT2 Drivers’ title in the FIA GT Championship, the GT2 title in the American Le Mans Series and also in the Le Mans Series of endurance races, and also triumphed in the gruelling 24 Hours of the Nurburgring race.

Like the 911 GT3 Cup and 911 GT3 RSR, the Porsche 911 GT3 R is designed and built by the Porsche Motorsport Department at the company’s Weissach Development Centre.

    Porsche 911 GT3 R Engine Specification:

    Porsche GT1-derived motorsport engine
    Six-cylinder boxer configuration, water-cooled
    3996cc naturally aspirated flat-six
    Four-valve technology
    Dry sump lubrication
    Stroke: 80.4 mm
    Bore: 102.7 mm
Max. power: 353 kW (480 hp)
Required fuel quality: 98 octane, unleaded
    Multi-point fuel injection (sequential)
Bosch MS 4.0 electronic engine management
    E-Gas with 'throttle-blip' function
