    What I still don't understand is how Porsche is going to "fit in" the 987 successor(s).

    Another fact: during the tour, we've been told that the new engine production is good for up to 500 engines per day. During our visit, only 147 engines were planned for the day. A lot of 997 we saw during the production cycle were GT3 and GT2 or Turbo/S. Meaning: I doubt that 997 sales are going too well for Porsche, especially the cheaper versions don't seem to have high demand.

    Most of the 911 Sales this year in the US have been preowned. The dealers still have significant inventory on hand of new 997.2. - cabs & coupes. If you look at the sales numbers for US  this past year 64% of the sales volume came from the Cayenne & Panamera. I also see more GT3 pre-owned and new on dealer lots.  987 sales have actually picked up over the last few months.  Porsche cannot wait beyond next summer to introduce the 991.

    Considering from Porsche past history, they will probably introduce whole bunch of special models such as Silver edition, Platinum Edition, For Japan only edition, for China only edition......They will keep up the sales Smiley.

     

    Can't wait for RC to shed more lights on 991 Smiley Smiley.  Is the new paint shop ready to go yet ?

    makes sense since I know of few guys who are waiting out for the new 991. It will definitely be in Porsche best interest not to delay the new 991 beyond Sep 2011....

     Not just yet, but should be very soon according to the tour guide at the factory. It will be an automated paint process now instead of manual Smiley

    Right, just that when we were looking at the chasis of the cars in the production line, the tour guide said that if you look closely bellow the palce were the rear lights will go on the chasis you could see the signature of the Porsche painter that painted that car, and that once the new paint installations were finished in the new place, they won't carry a signature anymore since it would be a fully automated process, no manual parts at all anymore. But I don't know what part of the process the painter does, if I remember correctly the insides of the car is manual and the outside is by robots Smiley

    The couple of coatings are automated since long. The outdoor I always thought is automated, too. The inside.... Might be ???? I always thought manual are o ly the tight corners, the rest is automated, but I might be completely wrong!

    I always thought the Cathodic DIP Primer, Undercoat Primer, and Clear Coat process was automated, but the base colour coat is still by hand ?

    As per the  Mega-Factories National Geographic program  which showed in detail the 997 Gen 2 production (including GT3)

    Today I "met" three LB-PF license plate cars in a convoy and they looked weird to me, even if not camouflaged. I'm pretty sure that Porsche is testing the "new" engines and other parts of the 991 under the body of the 997, it is a pity I wasn't able to take a closer look.

    There isn't much time left for 991 development, pre-production should start early next year and market introduction cars (those making it to the dealer presentation) should start production early spring 2011.

    Starting very likely with the 991, the whole painting process should be fully automatic because of the new paint facility, just as a side note.

    My note is not specifically in response to your post, but I cannot get the idea out of my head of a 991 GTS, being part of the standard 991 line up. Like in the Cayenne model line up. I think the GTS idea ( 2-wheel-wide-classic-pure ) is a good one and should not being reserved for an outdated 997 model. Is there a chance the GTS will become available earlier in the 991 model cycle ? Smiley

    It would be to good irehab, but even in the Cayenne it was used to push the slow market demand. So if we see it, them very late in the cycle.

    San Francisco car dealer Walter Dawydiak sent us some pictures he took of next-generation 911s testing clutch wear on the steep hills of San Francisco early this morning. Porsche’s engineers regularly test in the city by the bay, saying the environment can’t be duplicated elsewhere. His photos are some of the clearest we’ve seen yet with regards to the rear LED taillights, though the active rear wing is still hidden by a large shroud.

    While he spotted 911 coupes and Cabriolets, Dawydiak also tells us a next-generation Boxster was a part of the test. “It’s the best-looking Boxster I’ve ever seen,” he says. Unfortunately he was unable to take a photo of the Boxster...

    Cool SF pictures! My office is in Stuttgart city center. I see almost every day a camouflaged 991. Unfortunately they are driving, never seen so far a parking car where I could go close to take some close up shots. But that will be just a question of time! ;)

    I've heard today that Announcement will be in spring 2011 and official Presentation at the 2011 IAA.

    However, production of 991 will start before summer 2011 just after 997 production ceases.

    So 997 has just another 6 months.
