I suppose the conversion makes sense Grant, but I am only as good as my sources - saw it else where also.

Yeah the US spec is always a little lower due to SAE Net standard.  Also, the acceleration specs will look different, depending on whether it's 0-60mph or 0-100kph...

On page 5 of the Carrera GTS PDF the time for the coupe is 4.6 for 0-100Km (62mph)

With Sport Chrono Package Plus the Carrera GTS does 0-100Km (62mph) in 4.2! That is quick! It's a great car.Smiley

The 928 GT and GTS , though very competent and superb cars were not in the GT spirit of the hardcore 911s that started with the 993 GT or the  supercars in the GT1 and the Carrera GT mould or road versions of racing cars like the 924 Carrera GT.

What I'm saying is that the GT moniker should have been reserved for very special models and not to be given freely to various other Porsche cars no matter how good they might be.

I was referring to the street versions on which the racing cars were based. Particularly the 924 Carrera GT was (is) a perfectly usable fast road car. The GT1 Street not so much.

Thats the whole point...they want to sell 997 long enough before they start with the 991 production (which already started to be prepared in Zuffenhausen since we already saw 991 Weissach parts inside the factory Smiley. Porsche should stop adding those part lists with location description to the parts...too easy to identify. Smiley

May I rather suggest something like 991 WP or 99x WT. Nobody can actually deduct anything from this. Not that I'm not thankful... Smiley

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

i like the GTS very much as is includes almost everything i would have ordered anyway (well exept PDK but that can be added) and called my dealer today.

They will be getting 2 slots, one of them is going to be a demo car (production in December). This one they will sell after 3 months, which means i could have it somewhere in march.

The other one is a February production, wich will also arrive in march.

So no matter how much i like the GTS i will get the car roughly 6 to 8 months before the 991 comes out.

And i´m pretty sure i will want the new one, frow all ive heard...

Yes, Porsche brought the GTS out too late, pitty...

What rumored features of the 991 are you most looking forward to (and prefer to the 997)?

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

    1. after the introduction of the 991, the 997 will look older, maybe a little bit outdated. This has always been the case, it won't change.

    2. the 991 will offer a Panamera-like interior and an updated PCM system

    3. power should be practically the same, 405-415 HP are rumored (so you basically get the same power as on the 997 GTS for less money since the 991 Carrera S base model already has this power)

    4. improved PDK system (2nd generation for the 911)

    5. more options (like dynamic engine mounts, etc.)

    6. improved chassis and steering

    7. improved PSM/PTM system

    8. optional PTV system

The 997 Carrera GTS is surely a bargain for what it offers but don't underestimate the attraction of a completely new 911, the 991.

Difficult times for those who have a choice.

Maybe I should consider myself lucky that I have to wait and can't go for the GTS right now.

@grant: i do have the feeling that the 997 interior is dated (especially if you compare it to the new Cayenne and the Panamara), so im looking forward to that. Also to some more BHP (as RC correctly stated above) and new styling will be fresher i suppose.

Some additional new features (engine mounts and who knows what) would be welcome.

    @RC: thx for the update!

RC - Are you confident that the new electric power steering will be an improvement?  Most similar systems are worse than the mechical hydraulic units in terms of "feel", but I know the GT3 Cups/RSR's have used this for years (I never drove one)...

In the UK the GTS is only £2000 more expensive than the S.  It will be interesting to see how residuals hold up becasue whilst it will be rare and probably highly regarded, the 991 ought to impact quite severely.    I'm hoping for quite a bargain in 2 years becuse I think its fabulous

Wow John H, good for you. So I guess that it's a good thing after all that the white one got sold

Oh, and your thinking is spot on Smiley

Hehe! - thanks for remembering about the white C4S.  I was miffed at the time but, as my signature implies, I put it behind me and things seem to have worked out for the best..Smiley

I met with my usual OPC yesterday to discuss the GTS.  Not surprisingly, thanks to Rennteam, I seemed to know far more about the car than they did..!

Following my phone call the previous day they had made some enquiries and had printed off the PDF file.  They had no idea what their allocation was likely to be....speculation varied between 3 to 20.  They will phone me next week with more info as the General and Sales Managers are currently in Stuttgart and should bring more news back with them.

Anyway, I placed a £3K refundable deposit and my name now sits at the top of their order list...Smiley

For the reasons given in my earlier post, I'm keen to get my hands on this car but would be disappointed if I have to wait until next March.  I'm hoping to register it on the 1st January 2011.

When delivery dates are clear I'll meet with them again to discuss/finalise specification etc.

Looking forward to member's observations when the time comes...Smiley

Black wheels are standard, either the RS Spyder or the Carrera Sport. Wheels painted in body colour are also available at no cost.

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

can you have the same "standard" color as on the turbo S ? is that a painted color (silver) on the wheels ?

    thx

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

From the configurator it seems it's only black or body color wheels. So you can get silver wheels if you order a silver car (platin silver or GT silver).

Sure, it's a great strategy to clear out all the 997 inventory before introducing the 991. They learned that from the Cayenne GTS. I was really surprised that the Cayenne GTS sold well, even it only has 1 year product cycle. From a product point of view, its the just a Cayenne S with a Turbo bodykit with a "cheaper" suspension system than the PASM.

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

The Cayenne GTS was a very clever move from Porsche and I never actually understood why people would pay almost a Turbo price for a much slower car.

Marketing is very very important. If you make people believe something, they take the bite. The Cayenne GTS is actually the best example how Porsche marketing put a bait out there and customers took it. Not really being a bad product at all and making the customers believe that they buy the sportiest Cayenne available, the GTS actually took off pretty well.

In my opinion, the 997 Carrera GTS is a little bit a different story. It is actually a very attractive product from any point of view but of course people need to be aware that it is a product at it's lifecycle end and they may regret the decision going for it as soon as the 991 shows up.

My advice for interested GTS customers: if you can get a short term lease for this car, do it. You can still prolong it if you wish (usually). I'm not sure if the current 911 special lease offers available in Germany are valid for the GTS too.

If you want to buy the GTS, try to make a good deal. Don't let dealers take you for a fool. Smiley 911 sales have slowed down and dealers need to move more cars.

The Cayenne GTS was simply the best looking Cayenne of the first generation and that is why it sold. Sound did not hurt either.

The 997 Carrera GTS is a wingless RWD wide body and that alone will always make it special, all the other mechanical bits just justify the label GTS, When the 991 comes out the C2S will have the same performance but it will NOT be a wide body.

As far as life cycle how many late buyers of the 993 regret that decision over an early model 996.Smiley

Another issue, in the UK, is that the rate of VAT increases from 17.5% to 20% starting 1st January 2011..

That alone will put approx. £2,000 on the average price of a new 911 whether it's a 997 or a 991...even more if it's particularly well specced.

I expect a VAT increase in Germany too sooner or later, even if the economy seems to run well right now. We have 19% right now, VAT was introduced 1968 at a rate of 10%.

Just imagine a sales tax of 19 or 20% in the US, this would start a revolution. Smiley

The OECD recommended Germany a VAT raise to over 20%, for our "benefit". I'm not quite sure how this would benefit us, it would destroy the internal market even further.

I wonder if this wouldn't be better:
30% VAT for most goods (exception: 5% for food/medicine/baby stuff, 10% for anything below 100 EUR, 15% for anything below 10000 EUR and cars up to 100000 EUR, etc.) but no more income taxes anymore. This would also make tax evasion very unattractive and I'm pretty sure the state would benefit. Not sure however if these numbers are sufficient to cover state cost but it would be an idea into the right direction.

Re: Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

Guys, I still see something totally different going on here. I don't think this is a parts bin exercise to lead into the 991 in light of poor sales on the 997. This is the opening up of a new engine program.

The GTS has a 3.8 litre and makes the S obsolete in terms of performance. It is a step closer to the GT3, but with a different engine and power kit. As the power kit is not available for a standard Carrera (only the S), this makes me think the 3.8 (in S guise) will be the lowest option 911. That means there is a brilliantly efficient and powerful 3.6 lump that could easily go into the Cayman. There is still a great deal of time before the shared platform ideas presided over by M.Macht (now at VW) take effect and we see a 2.0-turbo FSI VW unit in a Boxster... or is there?
