Lotus to take relationship with Toyota to new level

Gift of Special Elise Marks Lotus-Toyota Ties

Lotus commemorated their successful relationship with Toyota today (17th September) at a celebration at the British Embassy in Tokyo where Lotus CEO Dany Bahar presented Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda with a specially equipped Lotus Elise powered by the last ever Toyota 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i engine.  The occasion marked the end of an era and the start of an even stronger relationship between the two companies.

As part of the celebration, Lotus CEO Dany Bahar said: “The presentation of Toyota’s last 2ZZ engine in the Elise is a symbolic gesture of our continued respect and deep appreciation for our partner not only acknowledging our past but also looking forward to our future together.”
Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda responded: “A Toyota engine in a Lotus car creates a completely unique drive feeling – a special blend featuring the best of Lotus and Toyota that we hope many car lovers continue to experience and enjoy.”
Based on the successful cooperation with Toyota so far, Lotus has decided to take the relationship with Toyota to a new level that will enable Lotus to create tailor-made powertrain solutions for future Lotus cars.

For more details on exactly how Lotus will be partnering with Toyota in the future, simply look to the Lotus global unveiling at the Paris Motor Show on September 30th where Lotus will showcase their new line up to the world’s media.  The eagerly anticipated event marks the dawn of a new era for Lotus and will highlight exactly why both companies are so proud of their relationship.

Re: Lotus to take relationship with Toyota to new level

If Toyota likes Lotus so much, they should have given them the LFA engine for the upcoming Esprit. :D  Instead, it will likely be a twin turbo V8.

Re: Lotus to take relationship with Toyota to new level

LFA engine is manufactured by Yamaha.  It probably incurs extra cost even for Toyota.

But, you're right.  Lotus V10 will be something!

Re: Lotus to take relationship with Toyota to new level

Toyota doesn't like Lotus so much. They do want to sell engines and more

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Smiley Furthermore, Lotus is good publicity for Toyota but I'm not sure about the other way around. Smiley

You may have a point RC, but under the circumstances, I think it will work out pretty well for Lotus.  Toyota will be able to provide custom engines from now on and they will be far better than what Lotus has been using in the last 5 years.

I don't hope Lotus intends to install a Toyota engine in this new 620hp car (with a weight of 1650kg...). This would quite inadequate...

I suspect the engine is based on whatever comes in the Lexus ISF, but heavily modified.  Humble beginnings, yes, but the engine should be pretty nice.  There is just a bit of a "mental" roadblock.

After all, Aston Martin V12s were created by mating two Ford engines found, and yet nobody complains about them anymore.  I suspect the same will be true of these new Lotus engines.

Why do you think the engine would be inadequate?

If so, hopefully they will rework the Lexus engine... The performance of the Lexus is really disappointing (thinking of the recent SportAuto test here) Smiley

Re: Lotus to take relationship with Toyota to new level

I am not all that familiar with the performance of the Lexus, but Lotus is claiming a 50% increase in peak power, so I imagine that the engine will be reworked.  Or maybe just turbocharged.

It will not be a drop-in engine, like the standard Evora or Elise's.

Personally, I am waiting for the next Exige.  Possibly a V6 engine.
