New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

One thing I dont understand.... Why they all comming up with mounting the mirrors on the doors. Mercedes does it, Audi does it, Porsche does it and even Fiat on the Fiat 500 does it.

I mean - its kind of retro and looks somehow different to that what we know the last years but just imagine the damage when hitting the mirror. For sure the whole door is damaged, too. Needs most probably metal work and a color job not only around the mirror also the whole door maybe car side. Versus hitting a mirror on the triangle most of time is done with a new mirror. I mean - long years back they had the mirror down there. And - those days it always was a problem with corrosion.

So - what is your opinion?

Regulations I think. They don't stipulate where the mirrors should be fitted but what size area the driver must be able to see through the mirrors.

    In theory: regulations and aerodynamics....

The bad part is that if you touch your mirror very hard you might need to repair the door too...

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

It's probably easier and makes more sense to strengthen the door for the mirror mounts rather than add more weight to the car by having to strengthen the wings.  The strengthening in the doors will probably count towards the overall NCAP rating.

I guess also it's less of an issue with regards to electrics and the like as you can join different circuits together i.e. mirrors, windows etc.

I guess it's only design paid with the price of extensive repair costs. Also interesting how wash-systems will work?

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

Aero and gives marginally better visibility.

But yeah, I don't like the look. The end up looking like stubby little appendages hanging off the door. Ruins the lines in my opinion.

I like them better when they're mounted between where the A-pillar and door meet.

To be honest, almost every new car has some sort of screen in it. I'm surprised we haven't just gone all camera based/w proximity sensors at this point.

And also just a new 'fashion' thing . Like always , it comes and goes. I bet that in 10 or 15 years, they will be all again on the A pillar

I think the desgin comes from the F1, that's how the mirrors look!

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

Like it on the 991, gives it that 993 look

What I don't like is the size of them, they are getting bigger and bigger..

I read somewhere that the larger mirrors are to accommodate the the American market, but rather than have two designs/sizes it was decided to use the same mirrors for the European market also.  Dunno if it's true or not.

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

The bigger sizes actually is because of new European regulations IMO

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

It has struck me also, and I don't like the looks of it, looks really silly and peugeot-like imo.

Some people mention EU-regulations as the culprit, but I think those regulations are only about size, and not whether the mirrors should be mounted on the door or in the corner of the window.  Should that be the case, the days of the 911 are gone, before you know it they regulate that the engine should be in the front!

The EU regulations specify the minimum field of view, that is, the area behind the car which the driver must be able to see.

Moving the mirror further away from the driver (for instance, from corner of driver's side window onto the sheet metal of the door) should give a larger field of view for the same size mirror.

Re: New Mirror mounting on the doors - what do you think about?

    Fritz, I think not:

If you move the mirror away from the driver, than the angle of view that is covered by the mirror is smaller, therefore, the area that can be seen  in the mirror is also smaller. If you move the mirror towards the driver, than the same mirror area covers a higher angle of view, therefore also showing more to the driver.

However, you might be right, in the sense that moving the mirror to the door allows the mirror to be moved backward, closer to the driver, therefore giving a bigger field of view... Wow, can't wait untill porsche will place the mirrors there where the original mclarens had them... might look cool!

You are absolutely right of course. Smiley

Without having done a direct comparison of old/new mirror positions on the same car model, I suspect after looking at the above photos that the new door-mounted mirrors are also slightly further outboard than the old ones. Smiley
