    GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

    Hi,

I've been looking at lightly used GT3 Gen 2 cars in the UK, there are a couple of cars that don't quite have the options on them I want but I can buy them around £8k less than a new car.  I didn't think new cars were still available but have been offered a confirmed built slot for speccable car to be built in October, with delivery in November.

If the all new 911 (991) was 2 years away I would order the new car without hesitation but I am concerned that we may be closer to the 991 than we think and am concerned that I might spend £95k on a car that will take a massive hit when the 991 comes out.

Am I right to be concerned or do you think the GT3 will be protected more than the regular cars as a new GT3 must be at least 2 years away.  I realise I will lose money no matter what I buy but I wouldn't want to lose more than £12k per year in depreciation really.

Does anyone know for definite when the 991 will be launched in the UK?

    Cheers

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

although we do not know exactly when the 991 will  be released, rest assured the GT3 is not expected in 2011. The Carrera's will show in late 2010 or 2011. The new GT3 will certainly go a different direction, so i think the 997.2 will become a unique collector in the 911 line-up.

These cars are still beautifully simple when compared the to technology injected 991 series we will see replacing the 997. I'd say go ahead and buy this GT3 right now. You KNOW you love it the way it is, and the 991 could get changes that need some "adjusting" such as PDK

That's all i can say at  this point. Not sure about UK release.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

I am in a similar position eyeing a 997.2 GT3 or even RS - but clearly waiting for the 991 prices and specifications.  On the otherhand I am not sure if I want a DFI engine versus the Metzger engine in the current GT3. All I can say is that on the swiss market GT3's etc are already clearly below the 8k depreciation vs new and I am sure it will continue quite heavily once the 991 is out in FRA Sept 2011 or even before when we know more about it.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

Keep in mind the 991 GTs might be market up in the chain, meaning they could get more expensive.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

991 is due next year but apparently, for the very first time, introduction is rumored to be in September and not in May/June like in the past. Again...this is a rumor. It is however pretty much sure that the 991 is going to be introduced next year.

The 991 GT3, development has been OKed, is going to be available earliest late 2012 as far as I heard.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

I get the impression that it was far harder to get a 997.1 GT3 (or a 997.1 GT3 RS) as new cars when they came out compared to the 997.2 GT3 and (to a slightly lesser degree the 997.2 GT3 RS) when ordering those as new cars. If it is easier to get them - and there are therefore more of them around - the impact on used car prices will be predictable.

    Just my 2 cents Smiley

Oh yes, depreciation. Funny, I have not even thought of that word since my new RS arrived. I think that is a good sign... sort of like Hemingway's comment about his favorite sport of pheasant shooting: "It's worth whatever it costs!"

Awesome combination. Very different yet coherent... Do you possibly have some exterior shots of the whole car?

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

Thanks, you are all very kind...  Some may consider it  too much 'bling' for an RS but my '07 GT3 was pretty basic and I decided to kick it up a notch this time. It is meant to be more of a 'touring' version of the RS, hence the full leather, etc. With a 'strong' exterior color, I didn't think it needed stickers. Very, very pleased with the outcome. Cheers!

Congrats on your new car, it looks stunning!

I am assuming that your car is the US version (from the rear bumper), how did you manage to get those seats? Are they available for US buyers now?

Enjoy your GT3RS, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

I found a new set at a good price last year (cart before the horse). You can find them here:   http://www.suncoastparts.com/product//997GT3SEATS.html

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

Wolvy for what it's worth my UK dealer is anticipating the 991 arriving in the UK in April/May. We'll have to wait to see if he's right. I pulled the plug on my October GT3 build slot so you may have been offered that. I got the distinct impression though that I wasn't the only customer cancelling their slot.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

    Cheers ISUK,

Hmmmm....  I just get a feeling that 991 is closer than we think,  by April/May I would imagine that spec and maybe pictures will be out in public at the very least.  I'm kicking myself I didn't take the GT3 a year ago but I'm quite sure I'll take a very big hit by taking a new GT3 at the end of the year, plus I won't use it much until Spring anyhow.

I know every car depreciates but in these economic times I would feel a little guilty about losing £30k or so in 18 months on a new car even though I can afford to buy the car outright tomorrow if I wanted.  This recession has made me value money much more than before as it is a lot harder to make it in the first place!

Maybe I should put a deposit down for 991 2S and then take a 991 GT3 when they come out in a couple of years.  The only problem is you can wait for ever as there is always something new/better around the corner.  A new 991 should hold its money well for the first year or so I would of thought (assuming it gets good reviews!)

    Your 458 is stunning!

Just buy the V12 Vantage wolvy - you know it makes more 'financial' sense!  Smiley      Seriously though there is always something better coming out whatever you buy that will damage the residuals of your beloved current purchase.  Buy it and enjoy it while you can and then worry about being broke when your an old old man! Smiley

JAMS - stonking RS matey!  Love it!!!

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

If resale is a major factor then an early 991 C2S will be a better bet IMHO. The Gen 2 GT3 is withoubt doubt a seriously impressive car but it faces a lot of competition in the used market place not least from the 997.1 GT3 and GT3 RS which will be pushed further down in value and start to look great buys when more Gen2 carsfilter onto the used market.

If you are not intending to use the car on a track then the new model will most likely be more than good for road use. I opted to go down the route of an early 991 for this very reason. I just hope Porsche don't get greedy and try and charge silly money for the new car.

    Re: GT3 Gen 2 - Depreciation

Yes the price of the 991 is a consideration, I hope they keep it realistic.  It is quite easy to spec a current C2S now to £80k+, which makes the GT3 look better value.

I guess we will have to wait and see....

what are the latest rumours regards 991?  I would have thought the 'S' will be 400+ bhp, and I expect the interior to be a higher quality/more luxurious than the 997.  I just hope it looks good,  the 997 range is nice but starting to look a little dated, but the panamera is new and I just don't like the look of that at all (except the interior).

The only thing in the back of my mind is the GT3 was just so much more exciting to drive the standard car, and perhaps the 991 will be even more 'luxury tourer' than sports car!?....

"Stunning! Not seen a guards GT3 RS before, best one I've seen....."

Thank  you sir, and sorry... I did not mean to hijack your thread. Just wanted to make the point that you just did: The next new thing always just around the corner. I have a wonderful Ducati poster with a sorry old man sitting on a park bench and the caption: "Someday I'll get a motorcycle. I've always said that"!
