Thankyou all for the kind words. I'm extremely relieved to have her back and after much thought I've decided to put this unfortunate episode behind me and keep her.
The dynamics of this car are amazing. So comfortable and easy to drive in town and heavy traffic, yet utterly violent performance on tap when the opportunity presents itself . I'm not sure I will ever get use to just how fast she is. 
A big thanks has to go to all you rennteam'ers who helped me get the spec of this car just right. Its the little bits of extra leather & stainless steel that makes every Porsche feel unique. Without you guys sharing your purchases & experience I would have been sure to miss some detail or other.

Hi PJ, glad problem has been solved. It would be nice to know what exactly happened, especially because of the dangerous nature of the failure. Did they give you worksheets of what was done and how much it would have cost without warranty? Any explanation at all? Software? Hardware?
They probably won't know the cause definitively until the gearbox is stripped down at the manufacturer's factory.

Truth is they don't know. As Fritz says a full postmortem will be carried out back at the factory and I've asked to be kept informed.
A new gearbox and control unit were fit. Dread to think what that would have cost out of warranty 
, but here in the UK we get 2 year manufacturer + 1 year extended warranty so I'm not too worried.
I'm still not entirely happy that my baby had to endure major surgery at such a young age (2days old) but since getting her back it's hard to stay angry - words can't fully describe this car.
