Re: 458 Spider will probably come with foldable hardtop

great write-up, i knew JC's steering wheel crying was over the top, but one really would have to try it. you have and i bet it's awesome. stunning 458, what a car!! enjoy!!!

Clarkson's moaning about the steering really is exaggerated, just think how often you have to use the indicator when the steering wheel is NOT in neutral position. Same goes for wipers and flash light. Well, I think it is a typical example of JC's style of journalism.

But and this is a big but, buttons versus stalks, for me the buttons really don't improve the handling. The only argument for the buttons may be that they make the use of the paddles easier. But then I asked myself, did I ever have the slightest problem in using the paddles when Ferrari still was using stalks? The answer is no. So for me, the new steering wheel design is purely done because of marketing reasons to document the relationship between Ferrari's road and Formula 1 cars. Smiley

Yeah exactly, another note to take is that this car obviously passed some kind of usability inspection, so it cannot be an issue or it would not be for sale. I too think it is purely so F cars have F1 steering wheels... looks so similar, and they could have put the TC buttons anywhere in the car..Smiley

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: 458 Spider will probably come with foldable hardtop

I have to say that the more I drive the 458 the more I like the functions being on the steering wheel. Everything is clearly visible and easy to use.

In most cars the designers don't consider the visibility of the column stalks behind a steering wheel so you can't easily see the markings on them. That's ok for a car you drive daily and get used to but not so great on occasional use cars. One of the few cars I've seen with column stalks where the designers considered this issue is the Alfa Mito run around I have. The couumn stalks in that are located in a raised poition near the top of thesteering column shroud and are clearly visible over the top spokes of the steering wheel hub.
