2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Just over half the 2010 season has passed already and the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships are very closely fought. There has been plenty of drama on and off the track with some of the rivalries within each team just as bitter as those between drivers of different teams.

I expect the Red Bulls will again be the cars to beat at Hockenheim with McLaren and Ferrari close behind (as usual) Smiley

On a personal level, this race will have a special significance for me since I did a Porsche Track Day at Hockenheim on 16 May this year. It will be a special feeling seeing that place on TV and especially seeing the drivers' cockpit views of the track and comparing those to what I saw (and experienced) there in my own car Smiley So I am really looking forward to this race Smiley

I expect another Red Bull win Smiley

Although it is still close with Button, I think that Hamilton is now emerging as the more successful driver at McLaren Smiley

I am concerned at how Massa has not been competitive so far this season. This season, Alonso is Ferrari's only real challenger.

As for Schumi, I fear his comeback (like that of Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France) should not have been made. For the fun of participating, he is spoiling his prestige and legacy IMO Smiley

Sorry, easy_rider911, but in my opinion, it will be the other way around, once, the F1-drivers have had a look at your comprehensive report on that track day event in May...Smiley...

I wish you didn't have to agree with me on that (TDF)

As for Hockenheim, a shadow of itself (like lance). I remember watching great races from there with turbo engines able to run wide open on the REAL Hockenheim, which was one of the most beautiful tracks in F1. Great high speed runs thru the forest. I remember watching Senna crash into the armco and get out and throw his steering wheel at the cockpit in disgust.

It does not seem like a real F1 course anymore.Smiley

How old is that map? Apart from Mobil 1 Kurve, Sachs Kurve, Sudkurve and Nordkurve, the rest of the circuit looks very different to that of today.

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

According to WIKI the change was made after the 2001 race. The above layout was the way I watched it in the mid 80's turbo days.

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

my god ... I am getting old...I was about to put in a reply earlier (...with a wild guess like "in 2004"...), because I drove on the old course many times before it was changed. If my memories are correct driving into and out of the forest was a bit "boring", as you did full trottle (which was fun) but then you had to wait and wait and wait, yawn..., for the next brake point - therefore, I do like the "new" layout...

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Maybe boring to a driver on a certain level (no offense), though I doubt it would bore F1 turbo drivers as all the overtaking was done on acceleration and also for braking at the chicanes at EXTREMELY high speeds.Remember overtaking before F1 became a parade, until recently.

Also for spectators watching on TV it was extremely exciting and riveting to watch as these very fast cars would perform lap after lap with the top drivers gaining a little here and there and finally setting up the overtaking. You could watch it unfold as well as watch the beautiful scenery.

Todays small slow tracks remind me of NASCAR. F1 = NASCAR, now compared to the fast tracks/turbo's.

GREAT visual example of what I mean at Hockenheim

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Simply - one of the most scenic sections of an F1 circuit ever. Now gone.Smiley

Sliptstreaming and slingshotting at 190 mph, not at all boring for anyone involved   F1 was special because of the speeds and openess of the tracks, lengths of the straights COMBINED with tight curves - Spa, old Hockenheim, Monza, Brands Hatch, Osterreichring,  NOT these little crap tracks like hungaroring.

Hockenheim has (at least) two configurations anyway. Were you driving on the full Grand Prix circuit?

    racerx:

yeah, unfortunately, I know what you mean...You are right, in comparison to a F1-car a porsche is quite slow...in the past, I used to drive the track in IMOLA / Italy at least once a year and we had tables to compare speeds there. There was one curve where the porsche cars were "only" 70 km/h slower in comparison to the F1-cars of these days...man, what a feeling... Smiley

yes, we did the full GP !! SmileySmileySmiley

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

I still remember watching F1 on the old amazing track. I LOVED it, it was the most special to me. Im gutted F1 ruined the track to make it just all the other ones...

As for this race, i think/hope Vettel will remain some seriousness and just take a dominating home win. It will also be interested to see how Schumi does.

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Hey guy's you HAVE to watch this - absolute CLASSIC - Senna's rookie year for team Toleman where he shoots the steering wheel after the crash at Hockenheim.

Superb quality footage from the height of F1 Turbo days with big rear wings and fat slicks. Hockenheim at its best, it was such a pretty track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

If somebody wants to see F1 live in Hockenheim:

I just spoke with the ticket Hotline - there are some tickets left for Friday practice and saturday qualification.

The price for saturday is 80 EUR an 45 EUR for kids - we will be there to support the LOTUS F1 Team.

PS I never thought, that my little son could see Michael Schumacher driving a F1 car again.

From this moment I support Webber Smiley

Anyway, let's hope the Scuderia is really back in the game, especially Alonso, so as to see some competition.

Re: 2010 German F1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim

Vettel tried to drive Alonso off the road and into the wall at the start and paid the price by losing 2 places
