The old 5 series was Bangle's child and naturally a bastard, except for the M5. I think it looked great. Oh, the glorious V10 sound, it was a GREAT car and I still miss it sometimes. I think i sold it too soon.
The new 5 looks better than the old, but every time I see one on the road, there is something weird about its lines, especially from the rear quarter view.
Hope the new M5 improves its looks and looking forward to seeing the new one.

I may the minority I guess. I didn't have an issue with Bangle's designs. I liked the old 7 and 5 series much more than the latest 5 & 7.
The new 5 looks out of proportion. It's trunk looks like it was grafted on from a 3-Series sedan - the front looks too long. The pushed the cabin back too far so the hoodline + nose look more like a snout of a pig.
I think I know what the styling inspiration was - but we left the short trunk/long nose "coachman" style back in the 20's and 30's and that's where is should remain.

I too like the original Bangle design 7, it was extremely nice.
The 6 was the ugliest of them all, the front looks like it was melted while they bake the paint dry, the rear looks like someone with partial teeth took a bite of it.
The old 5 was a patch job with all sorts of styling direction, front headlamp treatment is the worst ever for a car, the rear trunk has about 10 too many character lines running through it.
New 5's long hood short boot is just a continuation of the 3 series and the 7 and pretty much every product BMW has made. It's really is no different than any other cars out there with a front engine, like the SLR, SLS, Corvette, etc.

This one isn't with M package, but IMO white looks stunning:
I have seen new 5 series in all colours and when I saw it in Titanium Silver colour I wasn't sure if I like it that much, but when I saw white I knew in second that most probably 5 series which I will order will be white.

It is surprising how differently people perceive cars. I agree on the 6-series in that it has some weird surface treatments but it does look more homogenous to me. The 7-series (E65) features some incoherent design elements and, on top of that, looks visually very, very heavy. Especially BMW customers demand a rather dynamic appearance that this model entirely lacks. I agree that BMW´s concept on the current cars is very similiar within the lineup but I assume that the management didn´t want to make another mistake.
If one sees Bangle´s vision in the long run, his considerations have quite some substance. Its execution though did not succeed... I am very curious to see how van Hooydonk´s creations will fair in the long run.

But styling is such a objective thing, I hated the old 5 yet it is still a sale success for BMW, a lot of people hated the Bangle 7 yet a lot also think it's the best Bangle design.

Like it not!
Hope the M5 will have a better looking Aerokit.... this one looks pure. When BMW made horrible cars, the M Packages was looking good and also helped the Cars to look better. Now that they make nice looking cars again, but destroy the looks with the M package.... look at the 7 and now the 5 Series.
