Poll: Your phone and your 997

How do you use your phone in your 997?

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

    PCM Phone.

And I'm not too impressed with it!

But then again I've only had it for 3 days and time will tell!

PCM phone and on UK tarmac basically useless at anything much over the UK limit unless you SHOUT!. Better in Germany and France where they seem to build smooth quiet roads. And the person you call can hear PSE sound effects when you use 6k plus revs

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

Where is the "turned off" option?

There is a reason using a cell phone (even with a headset) while driving is illegal. It's dangerous, especially in a car that requires the driver's full attention like the 997.

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

I don't know what problems you are finding withb the PCM phone. I had it in my 987 Boxster S and had no problems coversing with the roof down at 70 mph on a busy motorway! Sure a Bluetooth installation would be more convenient but I don't think that the integrated PCM solution is bad - in fact I specified the phone module for my forthcoming 997 C4S.

    Missing answer option...

I NEVER use a phone in my car !!!

Phones in cars are dangerous and especially in a sports car. Period!

    Re: Missing answer option...

So you never talk to your passenger(s)? Integrated phones offer a safe means of conversing; dangerous - don't be daft!

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

I've got the PCM phone and am very disappointed. It is much worse than the after market SonyEricsson system installed in my Beamer - many people I called using that system couldn't tell I was using handsfree, let alone in a moving car.

This system has very poor sound quality for the other party in the call, even when the car stationary . Waste of money until they can get it to perform better. Handy integration with the rest of the PCM system, though.

    SoS.

Son of Stig - what model number is your Sony Ericsson?

    Patriot

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

i think the most practical would be a bluetooth module ,unfortunatly it is not offered

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

The PCM phone is great. I had it installed about one month ago in my cab and I find myself driving the cab in the winter here just to try out the phone. It also works fine with the top down.

Why on earth would you want to be driving hard whilst using the phone - now that IS dangerous!

At reasonable speeds the phone is adequate, not great, but adequate. One thing you must do is keep the volume down otherwise the person at the other end will experience a hollow echo type distortion in the sound quality.

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

Thanks for the lecture. But on an empty motorway how often do you use the phone at more than 70??

I do generally keep the volume down and did read the manual. But the car has inherently more NVH than other less sporty cars so use of the phone hands free is necessarily limited by the location of the microphone on top of the steering column versus the ambient noise in the car.

I wasn't complaining only highlighting the limits of the system as it stands today.

And by the way beofre you infer I drive hard whilst on the phone- the only reason I know that the engine can be heard is that I asked the person to pause on the phone a minute whilst I did an overtake on a slow truck.

Frankly I agree with you that it is adequate. But only just adequate. I'm not sure I'll bother on a GT3.

    Parrot Blue tooth

I had my installers replace the clock in the wart with a parrot Blue tooth receiver. It mutes the stereo and I have a clear view of the Caller ID from there.

When I sell it i will put the clock back. Unless whoever buys it wants it that way.

Sorry you thought it was a lecture - wasn't intended as such - just an observational query.

The reason I inferred you were 'driving hard' was because you mentioned 6,000+ revs which kinda indicates you were pushing it a bit.

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

re: Patriot asking after model no of SonyEricsson unit, I think it was the "Advanced Car Handsfree HCA-60" for my P800/900 - although this looks like a later generation unit than mine.

I hauled it out of my Beamer (now returned to lease company) and am thinking of installing it into my P-Car!

I'll take a look at the unit tomorrow and let you know. They work well, anyway - but it might mess up your interior unless you have an expert installer to hand.

    Good luck with it.

    SoS.

don't have a cell phone, got rid of it about 8 months ago
    freedom!!!

How much was the PCM phone to buy and install?

I have an EARLY 997S that has the PCM with a slot for the sim card but no phone... also doesn't play mp3's

Should your in-dash CD player fail (something that seems, well, not chronic but not uncommon) ask your service department if when they swap out the PCM unit under warranty you will get an MP3-capable PCM unit.

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

    No offence taken

I like to use the last 1000 revs or so as it really makes the difference between my old C2 and C2S especially when you get some miles on it. Mind you at full throttle in second you need to be quick to change avoid the (hard) limiter (sport chrono/PSE) on an overtake

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

I think the PCM phone (option 666) is a good phone, and better than most cell phones.

Re: Poll: Your phone and your 997

my voice don`t reach to the other side as clear as it should be while driving speeds above 80mph
