Why Audi didn't drop 4WD for this more focused car? Less weight more involvement. Also a proper DCT would have been good since they decided to offer it in automatic too.
At €200.000 this car makes the Turbo S at €175.000 and especially the GT3RS at €150.000 look like bargains. Even the class defining 458 Italia starts looking good value next to the Audi.
Let me explain few things since your post is opening few questions...
1. Audi did test R8 V10 without AWD. Only RWD version was not any faster then AWD one. Specially on the Ring. Since AWD is very important for Audi image they decided to stick with it.
2. S Tronic or DCT... Technically new Graziano DCT(the one used in McLaren MP4-12C) could fit if R8 is 20mm longer. Yes, only 20mm is missing for new DCT. Since rearranging the complete car was not in question Audi decided to save it for all new R8 in 2013. BTW, Getrag DCT used in Cali, 458 and SLS is much, much bigger then Graziano DCT and weights almost 35kg more! Even ZF PDK is 25kg heavier then Graziano DCT and bigger in physical size. Next gen of R8 will use Garziano DCT.
3. R8 GT price... Yes, 193000€ is a lot of money. Just... With same options(so, lot of CF inside which is standard on R8 GT) prices of competitors are following(notice app. German prices):
R8 GT 198.000€
997.2 Turbo S 197.000€
458 Italia 230.000€
SLS AMG 210.000€
Gallardo LP570-4 SL 225.000€
So, if you choose full interior CF in these cars difference in price is interesting, at least IMHO.
4. My problem is that Audi decided to offer R8 GT as R Tronic only. Yes, it is almost the same gearbox as in Gallardo LP570-4 SL still I have my doubts...
BTW, according to my source R8 GT is faster then any competitors mentioned above on the Ring. New 458 included(Audi as Mclaren and Porsche owns example of 458 for evaluation).

997.2 GT2 RS base price in Germany is 237405€ with Mwst.
R8 GT base price in Germany is 193000€ with Mwst.
Even, in USA(just there is a big IF both cars will be offered in USA!) price difference will be big.
For example with same options in Germany 997.2 GT2 RS is 50000€ more expensive then R8 GT.

That is just too much for an Audi (not meaning that in any disrespect)! 1k more expensive than a Turbo S?! I'll take Turbo S with PDK!
They did a decent job on the exterior to spice things up, but the interior is bland for the top of the range R8. Where is the alcatara!?

Regarding the GT-R, are you claiming you get what you pay for?
997.2 GT3 RS price in Germany is 148727€ with Mwst. BUT, comparison was between 997.2 GT2 RS-NOT GT3 RS.
Audi R8 GT will be at least as fast on the Ring as 997.2 GT3 RS and much, much faster in straight line. Also, that Audi V10 is torque king for NA engine, the way it develop its power and the way you feel low end torque needs to be experinced. IMHO even more impressive engine overall then 458 Italia V8 which is IMHO a true masterpiece. Amoung NA engines Audi R8 V10/R8 GT V10 and Ferrari Italia V8 are the best engines by far IMHO.
GT-R? Excellent car for the money. Just, IMO you get what you pay for..

Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS 7.33min Michelin Cup N1
Audi R8 GT is at least 10s faster on the Ring then R8 V10. Unofficially Audi claim that R8 GT is marginally faster then 997.1 GT2...

I don't find it hard to believe that the R8 GT will be faster than the 997.2 GT3 RS. It will probably weigh 15% more, but it will also have 25% more power and torque. I wouldn't be surprised if it's aero is better too. Mix in the mid-engine design, a possibly improved transmission, and AWD, and you have one serious car.
