The new 997 GT3 FL is the hell of a car and delivers a pretty impressive performance.

In my opinion, the 997 GT3 FL is actually the best offer in the Porsche model program. I'm afraid that as soon as Porsche realizes this, the base price will go up. Smiley

I totally agree.  What are your thought about the new RS?  Do you expect more than 3.8L?  Still GT1 motor?  Any significant new technologies (besides the usual light flywheel, larger rear wing, widebody, plastic rear window, etc.)?

Re: Porsche GT road cars: the future... (Drivers Republic)

Got a few hot laps in the new GT3 Mk II at the Nordschleife yesterday with a friend doing European delivery.  The car is simply stunning.  Now i can't compare it to the Mk I but having been a few different cars at the 'Ring this car really 'shined' out on the track.  Amazing machines these things are.  I like the interior touches to the new 997/987 cars over the silver and fake aluminum touches.  Just gives the car a nice sport pupose look to them without trying to be overlly luxurious.

Will post pics of the car later tonight when i get home.

I have always loved porsche with a pasion and have even owned a 993, 996 , 997s , and a 997 turbo . All great cars , but i have to say after seeing the Ferraris 458 ITALIA  Porsche in my opinion is years behind . I never considered Ferrari but now the only thing holdind me back is my bank manager !  so it greatly pains me to inforn him i will be looking for a new banker

Re: Porsche GT road cars: the future... (Drivers Republic)

    lionheart-

I tend to agree with you, except this and all previous Ferraris are not uasbale on a daily basis and have astronomical maintenance costs when compared to a Porsche.

I am tired of Porsche coming out every few years with only a 'slightly better' model, and everyone goes bananas over it. The same words were said about all previous generations of GT3s and Turbos...In fact it would be humorous to compare posts side-by-side from every new Porsche GT3 model launch since 2000. In contrast, at least Ferrari tries hard to make the new design look different. Well, maybe I am just tired of the Porsche 'parade'. What happened to real innovation in sports cars technology? I guess those were the old days.

Re: Porsche GT road cars: the future... (Drivers Republic)

Fair emough, but I think we Porsche fans are partly to blame. did you see how we resisted change when Rennteam II was launched?

What in your opinion is lacking in terms of technology?

True, Porsches do not have the dramatic looks of "exotics" but this "down to earth" culture has always been the attraction and the charisma of the Porsche brand.

Even in the old days the 911 2.4 was compared to the stunning then, Ferrari Dino and the mundane Carrera 3.2 was a rival to the beautiful 308/328/GTB/GTS. However, on the road the "exotics" rarely posessed any tangible advantage commensurate with their exciting appearance.

Re: Porsche GT road cars: the future... (Drivers Republic)

Well, what I meant were some of the following Porsche vaiants: 72 RS, 73-76 RSR, 911 R lightweight, street 935, 959, 92 911S2 (I owned 1 of 20 - they said 315 bhp, but wheel dyn'd at over 400 bhp), the remarkable 964 Turbo, RSA, 993 GT2 and GT2 Evo, the 996 GT3.1 and the advent of usable and reliable twin turbo technology, the underpowered 997 GT3RS. Forget Cayman, Cayenne, underpowered boxster, panamera, etc...Most Porsche owners seem to want nav, communications systems, and audiophile-quality sound systems, etc, all in a sports car. Next it will be DVD players for the small back seats. The 997 Turbo is a great car, but it is a GT car with the ability to have enhanced power. The 997 GT2, unlike the 996 GT2, is a very overpriced, heavy RWD car for those sissies that were afriad of the 996 GT2 widow-maker. Spoon-feeding by Porsche, but no longer a viable brand now that VAG bought them, lock, stock and barrel.

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

hi guys - 2 quick questions:

    1/ do we have a 997.2 GT3 specification / options book here?

[if no, then car config will do on web]

2/ is there a list of options & their weight?

[from memory PCM was 2kg, aircon delete was ~20kg, new front lift 5?kg, PCCB etc   ....]

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

    Catalogue_911_GT3_997_MY09_PCGB.pdf

to answer some of my own Q's i found a catalogue doc and a pricelist doc (in german).

    PCCB saves 4.8kg (overall)

lightweight bucket seats save 10kg over sport buckets

bixenon's are 6kg heavier halegon  (so google translate tells me) - i assume that includes the fluid in the cleaning system

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

    Porsche 911 GT3...

    Porsche-911-GT3_Top-Gear_02.jpg

    (17 August 2009)

The Porsche 911 is the water of the car world. It sounds absurd, but hear me out. We take it for granted and it’s so omnipresent we barely notice it, yet we couldn’t live without it. See what I’m getting at?

But unlike water, Porsche has improved the 911. Almost none of the mid-life changes the regular 997 Carreras received – seamless PDK transmission and direct injection primarily – have made it onto the latest GT3, which leaves me wondering just how much Porsche could actually do to enhance what was, on balance, our favourite 911. Possibly ever…

First impressions aren’t that good. The sheer functionality of the GT3’s interior means that you are encouraged to just get on and drive the thing, rather than wallowing in eye-catching but superfluous detail, or daft novelty. There is no daft novelty in a 911.

So we drive, but even here there’s an unexpected irritation: I can’t heel-and-toe in this thing. I know that makes me sound like some UKIP-voting codger with an Austin-Healey, but it means I can’t get into a proper flow on these sorts of roads. It’s a weird anomaly in a car whose controls are usually so perfectly calibrated.

The rest is just as you’d expect. We loved the previous GT3 for its linearity, precision, and astonishing composure over even the choppiest roads.

There’s revised front suspension geometry and adaptive engine mounts on this car, so it handles the worst I can throw at with real ease. There’s new aero too, so it feels more tied down.

And the engine – derived from the unit that helped propel Porsche to victory in Le Mans in 1998 – has grown from 3.6 to 3.8 litres, has improved breathing with Variocam on intake and exhaust, and now revs to 8500rpm with an insatiable hunger.

On a dry road, nothing turns into a corner or exits in such a dramatically undramatic way as this 911 GT3.

On the track? Given that it’s ready to race – in Clubsport-spec you get a roll cage at no extra cost – it monsters the opposition.

    No surprise there.

What is a bit surprising is the GT3’s duality. Rookies can lap quickly in it without scaring themselves, enjoying the chassis’ balance and the mighty brakes. The more expert can coax huge, controllable drifts out of it, for the same reasons.

What a car. Better, even, than water...

    Hi Lars,

Top Gear's lap-time for the 997 GT3 mk2 was reported as 1m23.1s (in TG magazine only) -- hopefully they will repeat the track test alongside the new GT3 RS and the Ferrari 458 Italia for Top Gear on the TV during the summer...

    Cheers!

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

To put this time into context, the Lambo LP670-4 which posted a 1:19.2 in the actual show, posted a 1:21.0 in the magazine. As they clearly stated in the mag, the STIG got only one crack at all these cars for the write up. It was expected that times would improve by 1-2% for the show due to multiple runs. The GT3 came second only to the lambo which costs 3 times as much and even the Ferrari 599 HGTE came forth (time with-held: incomplete lap due to bad tyres - but why would you rate it forth then?) and the Audi R8 V10 @ 1.23.6... The GT3 is one fast car and value for money to boot...

Let me guess? Not a fan of the GT3? Oh well, neither is Jeremy Clarkson but it was his mates whom did the testing :)

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

No Arakis is not a fan of Porsche. He is a F car fan boy (much like Clarkson) so he feel very threatened.

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

Actions speak louder than words. If the Ferrari had actually not completed a lap, they would have no reference and logically they should put it last... However, it was given 4th with no time and the excuse that the tyres went off and the Stig stopped the lap. As I see it, they ran it, it ran forth and not where Ferrari had expected it to run and the time was forcefully suppressed... Obviously it would seem that Ferrari are sore losers... The phrase "show pony" springs to mind...

I'm biased and say the following with some cheek but " I'd rather be seen pushing a GT3 than driving an F car".
