    Celebrating the Carrera GT

Many thanks to Porsche GB for organising this great event at Silverstone.

A CGT gathering with extensive drive on the Porsche track and the F1 track and testdrives of the new Turbo, the Panamera Turbo and the new GT3RS.

For GT owners, a very interesting news, Pirelli has finally manufactured a set of tyres for the GT, P Zero Rosso and it seems they are far superior than the Michelin SP which have always been the car's major drawdown.

    Can't wait to fit them.

Enjoy the pics. The naked chassis was flown in from the factory, pure car porn!

How many CGTs did they manage to gather there? Were there more than the 10 in that pic?

I think it was 12 of us.

Very impressive! and it was over two dates!

    Re: Celebrating the Carrera GT

I was a witness to the dismembering of Ben's CGT. The experts who were doing the disassembly were amazed by its race oriented construction and how well it was built for speed. It is a great but flawed car. It needed PSM and a paddle gear box.

The carriage tub is a work of art and its engine second to none. Porsche needs to build off this car. To my knowledge they have not so unless the 918 Spyder qualifies.

The lack of PSM on this car is bad. I would never buy it just for that reason.

It's not that bad franckly, I've driven over 16,000 km in two years with the GT and it's fine.

It's a proper sport car that you drive with respect, but if you have good driving skills, no problem.

You need to be quick and alert when you lose the car, but its chassis is extremely communicative.

There's a good ABS and the traction control is fine for most situation, including the wet.

Even the clutch is fine, apart from city driving which can be a pain.

I'm lucky enough to own a 599, an RS, a Scuderia, and many sports cars, and honestly, the GT is the best drive, the most race car like. An engineer's feast!

Then you'll be happy to know Nick that the 918 is actually exactly the same carbon tub chassis with a retuned version of the V8 in the RS Spyder and a different bodywork of course.

Add to that two electric motors and there you go.

It will have a DSG gearbox with paddles and I would assume some sort of ESP/ PSM.

Actually, I must admit that a paddle gearbox would be nice in the GT but what you lose in efficiency, you gain in interaction, it's a deliciously tactile clutch pedal, you can really feel the gears engaging through your left foot.

    Re: Celebrating the Carrera GT

I have driven the CGT many times and I agree it is the best race sport car I have ever driven. Like you, I never had a problem with the clutch but probably due to my mediocre driving skills there were times that I felt the car was too much for me especially with no electronic help.

That said, as I have written elsewhere, I almost bought a new black CGT but decided against it because it had a black interior. Had it had a tan interior, I would have bought it. In retrospect, I am glad I did not buy the car because at least for me it was and is not the right car. For others, like yourself and Mike, it clearly is.Smiley

    Naked chassis

Now with proper tyres we will see what that Beast can really do.

    Re: Celebrating the Carrera GT

The pedal is floor hinged because you really sit lied down, and the clutch is slightly heavier but also more on/off than the GT3.

GT3 clutch is heavy but more progressive.

Short drive and RHD so difficult for me to adjust quickly, but I'd say the car rides smoother and power delivery is definitely broader.

Overall, initial impression is that it's better in every aspects, which makes sense.
