    997.2 Turbo PDK testdrive

While pretty late I just had a chance to test a 997.2 turbo ith PDK and SportsChrono.

It's a firend's car whom I had helped order through Porsche and got him a rather decent discount of 10%.

Colour scheme is rather boring being meteor grey with black. pretty well optioned though with ventilated seats etc.

The drivetrain is so much better than gen 1 997 turbo in every concievable way. The exhaust sounds WAY better and fuller than generation 1. Surely has to do with increased discpacement.

PDK is simply marvelous. Incredible shifts. So much better than anything else. Light years ahead of ferrari's F1. acceleration is magical. absolutely seamless.

Outcome of the story: the guy is madly in love with my GT2 Smiley

let him drive mine and he almost wet his pants. he can't stop talking about it. before he got back into his car i warned him that it will feel like an SUV after having driven my GT2 for 50 kms.

Can't wait to see what porsche will do with the 991 turbo......

the 'feel' of gen1 and gen 2 turbo is very very different from the feel of a gt2. even engine wise. while you fel that in the turbo2 the pdk does it's magic, with the gt2 it's purely the engine. massive power in addition to the nimble feel of the gt2's suspension setup.

nevertheless, 997.2 turbo with pdk is light-years ahead of 997.1 turbo auto.

oh, and they are not sme power. the turbo2 has 500 hp versus 530 hp in the gt2.

i am sure that the 997.2 turbo S PDK is the best daily sports car out there based on my findings of today.

This is something I would LOVE to do one day, back to back TT and GT2. I imagine that it's all about ECU and suspension set up. It's hard to comprehend for an un-enlightened like myself that these two would be SO different. Especially if we are talking about the .2 TT Smiley

When I test drove the GT2, I was much more impressed with the handling and steering feel (no question, among best in the world) than the power. While the GT2 no doubt rules at high speed, in the low end it felt laggy - just like an untuned Turbo - and not that impressive to my butt dyno. This is a car born for the unlimited freedom of the autobahn, not for standing start street race.

Any driver should notice the tremendous superiority of 997.2 PDK in the low end, say 60-80 mph and below, over nearly every other car in the world, GT2 included. Smiley

    Re: 997.2 Turbo PDK testdrive

We had a hell of a drive yesterday and I was speaking with a 997 GT2 owner about the difference a NA engine makes, even on track. I was precisely managing my gas pedal between 6500 and 8200 rpm whilst he couldn't do anything close to precision driving on these mountain (rally ) roads.

He said same happened to him on track, where being able to squeeze more revs is more important than massive power in mid range.

Thanks for the comparision 997.1 turbo vs. 997.2 turbo vs 997 GT2. When will we see 997.2 GT2...? Shouldn't be long, or!?

The R8 has certain impracticalities. It's too wide for confined spaces in cities and too low for certain ramps. Also space for luggage is limited and the 911's rear seats are very handy. Two persons I know who happen to live in the same block, one of them can park his Carrera in the basement, the other with the R8 has to rent a nearby parking place because he scrapes the ramp, which is not that sharp anyway.

It's a pity really, because Audi engineered the car so superbly to be driven every day all day.

    Re: 997.2 Turbo PDK testdrive

and let's not forget that the 997.2 T/PDK kicks the R10's butt in the performance dept.the only car to cope while being fairly practical would be the F599 but then this comes at a totally different price bracket.

Porsche has nailed it.....now they only have to one-up it with the 991 and get the design right and we've got the turbo back at the top of the food chain.....,where it belongs since the 993 Turbo was introduced.

    Re: 997.2 Turbo PDK testdrive

One of the worst video reviews by Chris Harris IMHO. First, 997.2 Turbo is manual. Second, no Cali in this video-for opinion about Cali you should read new issue of EVO where R.Meaden wrote in depth report about all cars mentioned in videos. Third, R8 Spyder is also manual.

Only thing that I agree with Chris Harris is that XKR is a great car.  Other things are pretty strange since in one of the latest issues of EVO 997.2 Turbo PDK won over R8 V10 manual... EVO is pretty inconsistent in their opinion lately...

Sound like a lot of fun! Smiley

I understand completely what you are talking about. Each Porsche 911 has strengths and weaknesses -- the GT3's strength is its linearity of torque delivery, which comes in particularly handy in those low/med speed canyon/mountain curves. You could see this if you look at torque curves of a Turbo/GT2 versus a GT3. Turbo/GT2 curve explodes early at 3000 or so, NA torque curve rises gradually with rpm.

One solution for me is to constantly remind myself keep the gear one lower than I think I should and the rpm high, when the driving gets "OMG serious." :-) The Turbo is more linear this way and that explosion coming out of curve becomes a benefit, instead of a hindrance (the kind of hindrance that send your car to the outside curb Smiley Smiley).

This is why in some ways I think a NA V10, as in the one in the Lambo and Audi, is the "best" sports car engine, all things considered. Power of a Turbo, linearity of a GT3. But well... I am a Porsche guy, and flat 6 I will stay.
(The Lambo LP 560-4 is one of the very few cars in the world that I **might** pick over a GT2, if I have the funding.)

    Re: 997.2 Turbo PDK testdrive

You GT2 guys must be great (and courageous) drivers.  I drove a GT2 and a 997TT.1 on the Leipzig track a couple of years back, and the GT2 felt like I was on ice all the time versus the TT.  Scared me, old geezer that I am.  Maybe I drove too many old 911s, and had the rear end swing around on me too many times....
