    997.2 Carrera S PDK center radiator

    Evidently an additional center radiator will be added to the 3.8 S but not the 3.6 Carrera w/ PDK for MY 2011. I am curious as to the engineering rationale behind this. Does anyone here have any insight? Is this a potential issue for 09 and 10 S owners?  Thanks in advance.

    My thoughts as well. Any insider insight would be appreciated. Are we talking additional cooling for the engine or PDK? What prompted this? Retrofit available and under what circumstances is it indicated?

    Porsche needs to provide details about this ASAP.

    Where did you get this piece of information?

    As fas as I know not even the MY10 X51 Powerkit car uses a center radiator.

    Under what circumstances? There is a warning message ("transmission temperature too high") that appears in the OBC when such situation arises. Has anyone got this warning during the tenure of their cars Smiley

    I've taken my car on track twice, and both times, no warnings.  In fact, water & oil temps didn't show high at all.  I used manual & auto modes in Sports Plus.

    I remember in 996 Tips they all had middle transmission oil coolant.

    Not strictly correct, but the effect intended was the same.
    The center radiator cooled the "engine" coolant just as the two standard side radiators did, but the 3rd. radiator was added to Tip cars because these transmissions shed more heat than manuals, leading to the Tip boxes being equipped with oil-to-water heat exchangers which passed the tranny's surplus heat on to the water coolant, which was then conducted to all three radiators at the front of the car.

    Please document your comment? I have NEVER heard of this? Overheating of WHAT? PDK? Engine coolant? Engine oil?

    I call BS on your post without documentation.

    Tracked my PDK in Sport Plus and no issues at all. Have NEVER read of anyone having overheating.

    try it for 15 mins for example and you will probably see

    Porsche is just trying to make its cars better for hard track usage

    @atur777 - I have tracked it twice, for four 1/2 hour sessions each time,  but never faced overheating problems.  I for 1 keep it in Sports Plus mode whilst on track.

    However, if you have tracked it and faced problems, then obviously there's your reason to install a thrid radiator!  So I'm sure you're going to retro-fit the 3rd radiator?

    Actually, when the 997.2 came out I was surprised by the absence of the centre radiator on PDK cars and more recently on X51 cars. 996 and 997 Tip and powerkit cars had it.

    Personally, I would have liked my car to have this extra cooling, even for my peace of mind.

    I don't track the car but I did mountain ascents at near 40 degrees centigrade in the summer without any overheating warnings.

    Tracked my car multiple times in Sport Plus. No overheating. Again-I have NEVER read of a driver experiencing overheating.

    So, back to the beginning, it would be great to read a post based upon the facts of this issue, not someone guessing the PDK is overheating.

    So much guessing on forums gets passed off or interpreted  as fact, it is important to make clear what is known to be and what is not. Smiley

    Porsche would not add the weight ,cost, assembly line  logistics  issues  and increased drag of the opening for a third radiator if there isn't a  reason. 

    One may never get an official  statement on why it was added , whether for engine/PDK/driveshaft/diff cooling or all of the above , so as to keep '09 and '10 owners from worrying/obsessing  about a specific component 's wear. They may say something generic like the heavier PDK cars benefitting from better " overall " cooling of " everything " that generates heat.

     Porsche is insuring themselves from the possible problems by installing th third radiator.. you may never face the problem, but in some very hot conditions on the track you may face it

     

    almost all heavily tuned GTRs for example include addiitional transmission cooler

    guess,for what reason?
