Silverstone - Boxster Spyder test drive

Dreamcar and myself have both had invites to test the Spyder at the Porsche Experience Centre. We've arranged to go on the same day - 19th April - so will meet up afterwards to compare notes. Obviously our findings will be reported here!

Anyone else had an invite and booked up?

Looking forward to it - don't know if you can take photographs there? First time Porsche have shown any interest in us at all since purchasing our second Boxster - but if it's a sales pitch they will have to work a lot harder than the usual no discount on new and bottom book part exchange deal no matter how good the Spyder is to drive! Smiley

Just got the Boxey out of winter hibernation - cold blast to work in it tomorrow! Smiley All thoughts of selling the "Garage Queen" and getting something more practical (and come down to two cars) evaporate when I just fire up the engine and drive it again!! Smiley I guess the thought of the expensive four year service due this year was weighing heavily on me over the dreary winter months! Smiley It's been a very hard refit season as well, I've not even had much time to visit Rennteam, either....Smiley Still, nine ships down, one to go!

I think I am the only Rennteamer getting a Boxster Spyder, so I have great interest in this thread!  Really look forward to hearing some real world drive.  My car should be sitting in Stuttguard ready to be shipped to Australia by then.

Congratulations, I'm sure it's a fantastic car. My one concern with our notorious climate is how practical that "tent" soft top is. I'm certainly looking forward to driving it. Have I missed what spec you've gone for?

Re: Silverstone - Boxster Spyder test drive

I have gone for a very basic spec in keeping with the nature of this car.  However I have kept the aircon (which you will definitely need in the summer months in Australia) and PCM as they both come standard in Australia.  The only options I have gone for is xenon (for night driving), extended alcantara package and storage lid in alcantara.  I am still not sure about sports chrono.  I don't like the looks of the wart, but I am wondering if the sports mode is worth it???

Re: Silverstone - Boxster Spyder test drive

Your spec is much the same as mine would be if I was ordering one, except I'd possibly go for PDK and that lovely alumium steering wheel with proper paddles. I'd have mine in Guards red.Smiley

Re: Silverstone - Boxster Spyder test drive

It's funny Dreamcar, because I actually went for PDK originally, with the paddles and SC (you need SC with PDK cars as it shifts faster with sports mode) partly so that my wife can drive it too.  Then I realise that this car is about purity, so manual makes more sense.  Besides, my wife will probably never drive it anyway (she can't drive manual btw) as she doesn't like sports cars and we have a couple of other very fast 4 doors anyway.  So I changed it to manual.  I may still change my mind though as I really like the DSG on our Golf GTI!

That's spooky - same here although She Who Must Be Obeyed can drive manual cars she is short of leg so she finds it difficult and has to sit too close to the steering wheel for comfort and safety to be able to fully depress the clutch pedal.

If you do stay with manual I do highly recommend the short shift - I retrofitted it to my current car and it is so much more direct and precise than the standard shift. Easy_rider tried it when we met up last October and promply retrofitted it to his 997 C2S.  Unlike many Porsche extras it isn't horrendously expensive to retro-fit when compared with spec-with-order price though.

Wayne....make sure you get sports chrono! The throttle map on the sport setting will make it feel even more responsive! I reckon in the 997 C2S, the sports chrono sport mode is sooooo much better than the normal mode. Chaulk and Cheese!

BTW - I spent last weekend running both the AMV8 and C2S back to back on a few stretches of 'fun' road. Was very interesting! They were very different, but both were about the same speed.

Re: Silverstone - Boxster Spyder test drive

You can take photographs there - although it is probably better if you take someone with you to take them - there is an observation deck on the top of the building (at second floor level) that they can use. If your invite says it is for you only, don't worry so did mine - just ring them up in advance and they were OK to bring a (non-driving) guest. The lunch is pretty good too, so if you can get a slot either just before or just after lunch!

Here is a pic I took last year from the observation deck.

    PorscheSilv.jpg

Pit area is immediately in front of you here. You can see part of the track to the right of the picture and then passing under the gantry. The PSM demo area is behind the gantry, and then beyond that are the skid and kick plate areas.

    Enjoy the day!

Hi Charles Smiley Long time no hear - trust you are well. Thanks for the tips I'll take the camera!

Frequently think of you when we drive through Petersfield on the A272 heading to mother-in-Law in Burgess Hill. Be good to meet up again sometime! Smiley
