Since when is sexy and Porsche used in the same sentence?

Evolutionary design does not lend itself to sexiness.

I am a bit disappointed. I thought the VW executives sent the 991 design back to the drawing boards? If anything, these pictures reflect a step back (toward the 989) instead toward modernity.

btw i think that my guess that the new rear lights will be VERY slim might become reality. LEDs certainly allow such a design. Question is what design cue will they use to visually offset the larger "empty" bumper space instead? Otherwise we might get a Panamera effect in which there's a lot of negative waste land in the rear bumper. Makes the car look taller/slimmer.. yet the 911 should get lower and wider

Next-generation 911 caught up close, revealing subtle styling changes and new LED lights...

    (27 January 2010)

It might look familiar, but these are the best shots yet of the next-generation Porsche 911, codenamed the 998, that will replace the current car in 2011. As with every iteration of the iconic 911, styling changes are subtle although there are some interesting features on this test mule that will whet the appetite of 911 fans.

Don't be fooled by the 911 Turbo-style air intake in front of the rear wheel arch. On closer inspection it's nothing more than a sticker - Porsche engineer's idea of a joke in an attempt to confuse any onlookers. And judging by the light camouflage the front and rear bumpers have been remodelled very slightly.

Up front the headlights sit a fraction more upright, while below them is a set of dazzling LED daytime running lights. The side indicators are now also LEDs. Panamera-inspired wing mirrors are no longer mounted in the corner of the front windows, but on the shoulder of the bodywork, creating better visibility for the driver.

The oversize rear boot-lip spoiler looks like a tribute to the legendary 959 hypercar, but it won't be on the production car. It's job is to mask the rear end - fuelling rumours that an all-new retractable rear spoiler will be making an appearance.

Expect the same direct-injection flat-six engine from the current car to be carried over, with a mild power hike of course, and coupled to a reworked version of the PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

    (27 January 2010)

These are the latest spy pictures or Porsche’s next-generation 911 in winter testing.

The 998 model will replace the 997, which itself is just a thorough facelift of the previous 996 model. Construction will be a mix of steel and aluminium, and some components will be shared with the smaller Cayman and Boxster to keep costs down.

The disguise indicates that styling changes will be kept to a minimum, but Porsche sources have previously told Autocar that almost every panel will be new. The only carry-over parts will be the frameless doors from the cabriolet version.

The disguise at the rear hides a new wing, which draws on active technology seen in the Panamera. It will extend at high speed to boost downforce without impacting on drag.

The new 911 will be slightly longer and wider than the model it replaces. Porsche has made these changes to ensure the 911 meets ever-evolving crash regulations and also to improve both aerodynamics and dynamics.

Tech features will include an integrated torque vectoring system on four-wheel-drive models and a faster-acting limited-slip differential on rear-drive 911s. These spy pictures also indicate that the 911 will get LED front and rear lights as standard.

Engines will be updated versions of the current 911’s 3.6 and 3.8-litre flat sixes. Light-pressure turbocharging is being developed to boost efficiency, but these developments won’t be seen until the 998 receives its facelift in the middle of the next decade.

Sales will start in the summer of 2012.

Re: Porsche 991 spy pics... Thread Closed

That autocar article is completely useless:

"Styling changes will be kept to a minimum" - Duh!

"Disguise hides a new wing" -  ou don't say!

"Active technology" - wtf is that supposed to mean?

"boost downforce without impacting on drag" - BS, not possible, if you want something to create downforce, it will by nature have an impact on the drag.

    etc etc...

Well, at least they have the pics, we'll draw our own conclusions from that :P

    2011-Porsche-991-Turbo_Car-Magazine-Scoop-05.jpg

    (29 January 2010)

Porsche engineers testing the new 911 due in late 2011 were caught up in a snowstorm this week in the Swedish wastelands where they're writing the next chapter of 911 history. Dubbed 991, Porsche's new sports car family will be topped by this 4wd 911 Turbo model.

It makes for a picturesque set of spy photos – the black disguise ironically making the car stand out more in a white-out.

I see the next Porsche 911 looks exactly like the current one!

No change there then. Porsche has steadily chiselled away at the classic 911 form over the years, and it's not about to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This prototype has the side air scoops and body addenda denoting the blown Turbo spec.

Under that cladding lie Zuffenhausen's latest active aero developments. Our sources say there will be a pop-up rear spoiler and flaps dotted around the bodywork opening and closing to manage airflow and cooling requirements. Remember the malleable fins on the Ferrari 458 Italia's nose? Expect more of that thinking on the new 2011 Porsche 911.

    What's new under the skin?

No great shakes here. Porsche is under ever increasing pressure to cut CO2, so there will be numerous fuel-saving measures, including a switch to electro-hydraulic power steering. Our information suggests the engine line-up will continue with the flat-six engine, in 3.4 and 3.8-litre iterations for Carrera and Carrera S models.

Higher up the food chain come the usual Turbo, GT3 and GT2 iterations. Some Porsche types nudge and wink and suggest a wild 600bhp GT1 could be on the cards too.

The 911 will again share parts with the next-generation 981-family of Boxster and Cayman models.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Porsche tech boss, speaks:

CAR has published an interview with Porsche's R&D director – and it's worth repeating some of his musings on the 991 project. 'It [the new 911] will be even more competent, even sexier, even more unique,’ says Dürheimer. ‘The design can of course only be evolutionary, but beneath the skin, almost anything is possible.’

How will we spot the next 911?

‘There is no more need for old-fashioned protruding door mirrors, the pending pedpro [pedestrian protection] requirements will force us to make relatively obvious alterations to the nose of the car, and for aerodynamic reasons we are also going to reshape the rear end,' says Dürheimer. Hence the ducktail disguise on this prototype.

'But apart from these must-dos, we won't tamper with the proportions of a true classic.’

What about material advances on the 991?

‘In this discipline, we learned a lot from the Carrera GT,’ says Dürheimer. ‘The supercar taught us plenty about carbon-fibre, so that composite materials can soon be a serious alternative to aluminium. The secret to feasibility is automation, an area where we still have a bit of work to do.

‘Together with other changes, the much more sophisticated material mix should help to reduce the kerb-weight by 10% and with it the fuel consumption – no mean feat in view of the more powerful engines and the more complex chassis set-up.’

How will the new 2011 Porsche 911 drive?

'It's not as straightforward as it sounds,’ says Dürheimer. ‘On the one hand, I still want purism like the feel of every loose chipping through the rim of the steering wheel. But on the other hand, marketing urges me to fit a parking aid complete with rear-mounted camera and beeper.’
