Two classics for sure. I think I would rather have the RS. That thing will be fool forever...

Re: Sportclassic & carrera RS 1973 pics

I don't mind the design of the Sport Classic but like many others I have a problem with the logic of the car. It's neither the reincarnation of the 73RS nor a logical addition the 911 line-up, in particular considering the price. Having said that, I couldn't care less as Porsche will find some bored rich people to buy the cars just for the sake of it and they will lock them away in some underground car park as a collectors item. So very soon nobody will talk about these cars anymore.

As a true reincarnation of the 73RS I would buy myself the ducktail lid and screw it onto the new RS for those days where I get sentimental.

    Nice, thanks !

Re: Sportclassic & carrera RS 1973 pics

Not a criticism, but an observation - The SC parked next to the '73 RS shows us how big and 'heavy' new cars look!  I can just 'see' the lightness and nimbleness of the '73 car (and also simplicity of design that made the 911 an icon).  Of course, the same is true for any car nowadays compared to their classic counterparts.  I read somewhere that the new Honda Civic is actually larger than the original '85 Honda Accord!

I have kept a 911SC 3.0lt up to 2003, a car that was more substantial than the 70s 911 models. Believe me every trip especially on the highway was a risky adventure. So if we look beyond the romaticism and charm of older cars, size and weight and the driving aids of modern cars, count for a lot!

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Re: Sportclassic & carrera RS 1973 pics

Modern cars are heavy and ballooned because of environmental and safety regulations that began in the US and extended enventually to Europe and the ROW.  Luxury items such as A/C and electric windows (not to mention all the digital age gizmos) are expected on automobiles worldwide. When you place a 997 next to a 73 911 you're not just viewing two Porsches, you are also viewing the social engineering of the last 30 years.

Absolutely true.  Porsche has done a reasonable job vis-a-vis the challenges of safety, the environment, and new technologies.

I think a new BMW 3er is larger than the original 7er too...

Probably not longer, but near enough! 4.5m (e90 3 series) vs. 4.8m (e23 7 series).

But width-wise, they are nearly the same!!

Do you know how much a 1979 635CSi (E24) with 5-speed close-ratio gearbox weighed?  This was my first German car (I loved it).

Thanks!  Not only was that a fabulous car, but I bought it extremely cheaply ($3,700) in around 1990 and then added an LSD from an Alpina version for $500 more.  I kept it as my daily driver for 6 years and then replaced it with my first Porsche (1973 911S).
