Great result for the GT3 RS though.  13th I think it  was.

That's the car co-driven by Chris Harris. Is it a standard road legal GT3 RS?

Here is a VERY interesting article.

So it looks like it was engine failure that brought the Hybrid to a stop.

    This is really not good!

Yes, the car is pretty much as you can buy it, other than a special seat (required by FIA), a 20l additional fuel tank and 18" wheels with slicks. PASM remained as far as I know and they were using the steel brake as PCCB would not be allowed.

They drove the car on street tires from Stuttgart to the Nürburgring. It even had its license plates on during the race.

Unbelievable result somewhat aided by the failure of faster cars. The drivers said that car was very comfortable to drive.

No,  I have heard that it was engine from other sources too.

We will soon find out when Porsche publishes their PR.

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

    Confirmation:

After 22 hours and 15 minutes, the leading orange-and-white 911 GT3 R Hybrid retired with engine damage in the Metzgesfeld passage. “I heard a loud noise at the rear of the car and suddenly the power went,” says Porsche works driver Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) describing the abrupt end of all hopes for victory.

Despite a disappointing race, Chairman of the Board at Porsche AG, Michael Macht, who visited the race on Sunday, came to a positive conclusion: “It wasn’t enough for a win, but the Porsche hybrid technology clearly proved its potential at one of the world’s toughest races. We will continue developing this innovative drive concept. That was certainly not the last race for a Porsche hybrid car.”

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Board Member for Research and Development at Porsche AG, gives an outlook to the future: “The 911 GT3 R Hybrid has proven that highest performance and a unique efficiency don’t exclude each other. The vehicle shows the technological path to racing in the future.” - Porsche

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

In this year´s race a significant amount of competitors have suffered from mechanical failures and accidents, especially those numerous GT3s that have usually been sure contenders for the podium. I applaud Porsche for making the entry for the Hybrid and have been confirmed by the car´s competitiveness.

BMW even repaired the 2nd M3 that crashed during the race and finished on 7th place. Aston Martin finished remarkably well with both the Vantage and Rapide which should certainly boost their reputation. Audi, providing a huge number of potential winners, faired comparatively weak with only two R8 LMS on third and fifth position.

Isn´t it ironic that both Hybrid entries so far, the Gumpert Apollo and the GT3 Hybrid, suffered from failures of the proven combustion engine drivetrain? The former suffered from repeated transmission failures, the later from a blown engine that happens rather seldom on the GT3. In both cases, the electrical drivetrains worked without any flaws.

Porsche AG are officially and openly totally against Tuners. So the Corporate Rules dictated this distance.

Yes, I thought this might be behind this behavior. One on hand it is understandable, on the other they are a client. Also - I know some tuners that have quite a "good" relationship with Porsche.

There is Manthey Racing the NBR team and Manthey Motors the tuner.

Perhaps, Porsche use this distinction to do an ostrich given the success of the racing team in the last few years.

Can we get the Chassis number of the GT3 RS so that we can help PJ out and make sure he doesn't buy it at some point in the future.

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

    2010 Nurburgring 24-hour – Chris Harris comments...

“CHRIS HARRIS: REFLECTING ON THE N24 - THE GT3 RS'S FINEST HOUR”

    (18 May 2010)

Not having ever taken Acid, I’m not quite sure if my current state-of-mind can be likened to coming down from a trip, but it must be close.

I’m at that junction where Euphoria subsides and the blues begin. There’s now a void where last week an all-consuming project controlled everything.

That’s the strange thing about motorsport: it’s so tightly contained - both temporally and geographically – and the sport itself is so ubiquitous that today’s victory is, for anyone not directly connected with it, yesterday’s vague memory.

I went to the paddock yesterday morning to collect something and it was already mostly deserted. For someone who never wanted Sunday 16th May 2010 to end, it looked too bare; too empty. Twelve hours earlier it was the centre of my universe; swollen, spilling-over with people and machinery. It’s the most exciting paddock in the world – as befits the best race in the world.

Of course you’re going to get a sizeable story in EVO soon, and a video too, so now isn’t the time to drop into minute detail of the event. But I’m just here wondering if my understanding of motorsport might just have altered over the past week.

A few hours before we crossed the line in the Eiffel, Mark Webber won the Monaco Grand Prix – and he deserved the victory. But he did it in a machine that doesn’t look like a car, in a team whose real business is energy drinks, powered by an engine made by a French car company whose everyday wares couldn’t be further removed from Formula One.

Manufacturer Motorsport exists to sell cars – whether by increased exposure or engineering development – and I’m still not convinced, for example, that Mercedes sells any more cars because it is entered into the F1 championship.

Perhaps Porsche won’t sell any more 911s on the back of this past weekend – who knows? But as a demonstration of what works racing should be about - race on Sunday; sell on Monday – it was stunning. More meaningful for me as a car enthusiast than the strange world of double-diffusers, or using the back of your left hand to cover a vent that stalls a rear wing. Perhaps Fduct is actually a metaphor for the state of the sport?

Porsche drove a street car to the world’s toughest race, vastly exceeded any expectations over 150 hard laps of the Nordschleife, and then drove it home again.

It was many things to many people: special, notable, interesting, emotional, testing and, at times, scary. But most of all, it was tangible.

I think that because of it's innovative hybrid technology , it will be allowed to race.

Anyway , as I said before, we need to take this with a pinch of salt.
