2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

    http://www.insideline.com/porsche/cayenne/2011/2011-porsche-cayenne-breaks-cover-in-germany.html

STUTTGART, Germany — Information about the 2011 Porsche Cayenne has unexpectedly surfaced in Germany almost two months ahead of its planned unveiling. Scheduled for introduction at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, the same time frame as the forthcoming new-generation Volkswagen Touareg, the new Porsche Cayenne has recently been described in the German press after a private introduction to the media on December 15. Official information from Porsche says the Cayenne will feature a turbocharged, 500-horsepower 4.8-liter V8, a 400-hp 4.8-liter V8 and a 300-hp 3.6-liter V6.

Improved fuel efficiency from these engines is accompanied by a 10 percent weight reduction in the overall vehicle. Diesel and hybrid versions are planned, but they won't be coming to America.

Also planned is a successor to the recently introduced Cayenne diesel model with a turbocharged, 240-hp 3.9-liter common-rail diesel seen in the diesel version of the 2010 Audi Q7. In addition, the Cayenne will also use the hybrid powertrain adopted for the forthcoming Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, which combines an Audi-engineered combination of a supercharged 330-hp 3.0-liter V6 with a 47-hp electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. Neither of these powertrains is expected to be seen any time soon in the U.S., however.

Every Porsche Cayenne will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and European models will incorporate automatic stop/start. The low-speed transfer case has been deleted, making the Cayenne a pure on-road vehicle.

While official figures are yet to be communicated, Porsche claims fuel consumption for its gasoline-fueled engines has been reduced by up to 23 percent. Porsche also claims that the new Cayenne Hybrid will achieve 28.7 mpg on the European driving cycle, plus it will meet the European standard for C02 emissions of 200 gm/kilometer, which will significantly reduce its tax burden and thus increase sales.

Porsche has also managed to slash the weight of its SUV by up to 10 percent, with the Cayenne S having shed an impressive 396 pounds to weigh 4,553 pounds. Even so, Porsche says the Cayenne includes more than 154 pounds of assorted new features. The dramatic reduction in weight has been achieved through a range of measures, including a new production process for the doors that saves 86 pounds, the deletion of the two-speed transfer case and an increased number of aluminum chassis components which shaves a further 146 pounds. The new-generation Cayenne also combines a chassis with high-strength steel with aluminum hood, doors and a tailgate.

As with its predecessor, the second-generation Cayenne will be manufactured in a two-stage process that begins at Volkswagen's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg and then ends with final assembly at Porsche's factory in Leipzig, Germany.

The first public outing for the 2011 Porsche Cayenne will still be at the Geneva auto show in March. North American sales are planned to begin in May 2010.

Inside Line says: This early release of Cayenne information might be part of the renewed Porsche-Volkswagen rivalry in the wake of the Stuttgart company's takeover by the Wolfsburg giant. — Andreas Stahl, Correspondent

The low-speed transfer case has been deleted, making the Cayenne a pure on-road vehicle.

    WTF is this all about?

Nothing exciting or good that i can see from this Volkswagen Cayenne with Audi engines that won't even make it to the USA and won't be introduced in the beginning...

I suspect a lot of this info is based on thin air and remain positive for the actual release.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Actually, that's the BEST possible news about the new Cayenne. Porsche finally ditched the excess weight that 95% of it's customers does not use. Light means more performance :)

Porsche could always find a way to offer an offroad package with that later if some customer needs it.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Let me put it this way without burning my tongue: it sounds good.

Btw: as far as I remember, I may be wrong though, there is going to be an "off-road" option, adding a low speed transfer case.

The weight reduction won't be too spectacular though, just wait for the official numbers. It is a good beginning though.

I'm very surprised to hear about the introduction in Geneva because I doubt that Europe is going to be the main market for the next Cayenne generation. Unless Porsche really succeeds to create a green image with that Hybrid (which by the way will be available from day one).

RC that sounds more like it. They would be complete fools not to bring a hybrid from day one. Also i doubt weight savings will be dramatic or sufficient...

    So...no PDK, Cristian?

    8 speed tiptronic?

Unless they havesome breakthrough technology, hybrid is just a diversion to keep our green friends happy...

Nope, no real breakthrough. They use a supercharged Audi V6 engine for this purpose. Output is in the 380 HP range (with hybrid active), without it aprox. 330 HP.

Look at the BMW X6 Active Hybrid. No real breakthrough here either in my opinion.

Diversion? Yes and no. They also need the hybrid to lower fleet consumption/CO2 output. Smiley

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

     why no pdk

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Should have put the hybrid drivetrain into the Turbo, fast and green at the same time :) The battery can provide power to mask the turbo lag.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

No low transfer case = PDK.

Looks like i answered my own question (just not sure that I am correct).

Well...there would have been one problem though: development cost. The hybrid isn't as "green" as many people think, look at the X6 Active Hybrid, the latest fuel consumption reports from preliminary tests were pretty disappointing. These cars are way too heavy to offer a considerable fuel consumption reduction.

I still think that the way to go is a very powerful Diesel with huge torque but power output at a very low rev level. I bet that Audi could "tune down" the V12 monster Diesel with 500 HP to lets say 400 HP and at the same time reduce Diesel consumption by a considerable amount. Just imagine a 400 HP "truck" eating up only 8 liters of Diesel on 100 km. This would definetely be something people could rely to from a green conscience point of view.

I know that Diesel engines aren't really green from many points of view but since the whole enivronmental discussion has come down to fuel consumption and CO2 output only, it would be a HUGE marketing success for Porsche.

    Well...what do I know...I'm just a customer.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

It's because of the North American market, which still views Diesel engines as smog producing tractor engines, they will never equate Diesel with environmentally conscious.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Don't want to hammer on the removal of the low transfer case but I take my CTT offroad. The low transfer box is always activated on steep mountain terrain and the looking diffs help in the sand. I forsee issues with the Cayenne MK3 to becoming useless apart from road conditions (like my X5) The cayenne concept has been a top seller and is a great concept so why change? My CTT outperforms everthing in it's path and can handle unforseen difficult road conditions (snow, sand, water etc). Although the MK3 is 10% lighter, the 0-100kph will still be round 5 secs, so no difference here. Also now with the suggestion that the MK3 Cayenne will have a 8speed tiptronic (and if so) I don't see any advantage to change to the new CTT (and loose a lot of money in the process). I see the MK2's being around for a long time. The MK2 drives like a king, the CTT extremely fast, has all the modcoms and most of all is bullet proof (though wood). The MK3 needs to be very special for me to change, not to mention become a volkswagen/Audi hybrid.........lets wait and see....................

I expect the off-road package (transfer box and locking diffs)  to be on the options list, so no problem there for the all terrain enthusiast. OTOH the on-road SUV driver won't be penalized by the weight and the complexity of unnecessary for him/her hardware.

Mercedes have introduced this marketing feature with the current ML very successfully IMO.

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Things are changing in the US, slowly but surely. Diesel definitely gets more traction now, e.g. Audi is pushing its clean Diesel technology quite a bit in TV ads.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

    Still, I would take a hybrid-ed Turbo.

Imagine sitting in stop and go traffic using only the battery, then road opens up and here comes 500hp to the pavement. Best of both world.

The hybrid part is good for city traffic jams, puts out no exhaust gas to fume up downtown cores.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

A P turbo engine delivers incredible performance and fun, especially in a Cayenne. Porsche cars are all about handling and I will always choose a lighter P car over a battery  pumped up one!

Thats exactly my point with hybrids. They ARE too heavy compared to the standard model. I also think that this hybrid hype started from a very narrow point of view.

Lets take the Toyota Prius here: I have a customer who drives one, fuel consumption is around 7 liters / 100 km.

Now lets take a modern VW Golf TD or better, a BMW 120d. Both cars develop more power and have better performance than the Prius but consumption is practically the same, even slightly lower. My neighbor drives a BMW 120d and he claims he has a consumption of 6 liters / 100 km, driving it normally without trying to consume less.

The new BMW Active Hybrid consumed around 1.5 liters less on 100 km than the 50i. C'mon, this is ridiculous. You pay A LOT more, get almost 200 kg more weight and fuel consumption goes down by 1.5 liters only ? They must be kidding.

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Few month ago I drove the Touareg (current body) Hybrid and I was amazed by the performance of this car. Cayenne will have the EXACT same engine.

If you go easy on the gas pedal you can manage to go up to to 40km/h on electric mode only, then the regular engine (gasoline) is kicking in but you don't feel it.

Then the best is yet to come with the electric mode being able to "help" until 120km/h. It means that going from 80-120km/h is done in a flash of a second .... the Touareg felt much faster than my Cayenne S (Gen I).

They say the Touareg Hybrid will have a fuel consumption of 9.0l/100km ....

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Of course this car felt faster...it has a supercharger AND almost 50 horses more.

This is NOT  the 2011 Cayenne but the new Geely Cai-lan avail soon at their dealerships throughout China .

The most stylish urban couples will of course pair this workhorse  crossover with a sleek BYD S8 for a night on the town :

Haha MKW... I like the compare to the Chinease Mercedes fake!

Re: 2011 Porsche Cayenne Breaks Cover in Germany

Guys, the next generation Cayenne really looks nice, just wait for the camo to be completely removed. The first Cayenne generation wasn't a beauty when it was introduced, the facelift improved this a little bit. The next generation really looks like a nice and refined car but don't expect a very aggressive or offensive styling because Porsche had to make the next Cayenne generation "socially acceptable". This sounds weird but since Europe is also one of the biggest Cayenne markets, a very aggressive and "here I come"-styled Cayenne would have been a huge problem.

Just relax, you're going to like it.

What about the Panamera then ? Smiley I know that the Panamera was supposed to be Wiedeking's legacy but like his future at Porsche, I don't know how the Panamera will do. Lets talk after the Panamera facelift, I bet with you that it is going to look less "here I come". Smiley At least the short version. Smiley
