    Re: Fitting a short shifter

I have the same aluminium & leather gear lever too - it was available (on its own) as a factory fitted option (X97) back then which I got without the aluminium & leather handbrake lever. It's wonderfully tactile Smiley

I believe it's now only available with the aluminium & leather handbrake lever.

@John H: I checked the short shifter again this morning after a stone cold start. Yes, it was a little firm but not notchy. And within a few minutes, it was nicely warmed up. But the increased precision and shorter travel was wonderful.

Trust me John, you won't regret it

    easy_rider911:

Hi John - a mini-facelift sounds like a great idea  It's always good to try to keep things feeling fresh/rejuvenated Smiley

In the UK, most owners (who haven't leased etc) are going to have to hang onto their cars for longer since the depreciation hit is so much worse than in years gone by. While I mostly wanted to increase my driving pleasure, this other factor was also part of my decision too i.e. whether I should be investing more money in it given that I will be keeping my car for a while.

The weather down here in London has turned a lot colder this week. Monday evening in particular was especially cold due to mist and fog descending everywhere. But the short shifter was still fine. When starting from stone cold, it was 'firm' when cold but not 'notchy'.  Like Porsche-Jeck said, it takes only a few minutes to warm up.

I would suggest you speak to an OPC to arrange a test drive. I did one in a Cayman with short shifter. I found it helped give me peace of mind to try it out before taking the plunge. NB: the Cayman/Boxster is slightly notchier than the 911 short shifter.

All I can say is that my only regret has been not fitting it sooner. It really is THAT good

About the other things - I still love my SportDesign rims even though they are more work to clean - but I have grown to really like the modern 'industrial' look of the Carrera S rims that you have on your car. They really suit it. Personally, if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't change them but it's a very individual choice we all make.

As for decals, IMvHO they need to suit the character of the car to look and feel appropriate. If it isn't appropriate, then IMvHO it just feels like the owner is 'trying too hard'. I think they look much better on a GT3, GT3 RS or a classic 911. I personally wouldn't fit them on a Cayenne, Boxster, Cayman, Carrera, Targa, Turbo or even a GT2. Turbos and GT2s need a more stealthy look - they don't need to scream out that they are quick.

Hi Easy - Many thanks for your reply...Smiley

As you suggest I intend to test drive the short shifter before deciding but your thoughts, having fitted one, are valued.Smiley

As far as wheels are concerned, I will be looking at other alternatives as well as Porsche's own range.  I agree the Carrera S wheels suit the car well but, as you say, I'm looking for a fresh feel.

The side decals, or decorative side logos, as Porsche call them, are something that only occurred to me when I picked up the latest Tequipment 911 brochure.

They appear much more subtle than in the past and are featured even on the cover of the brochure...

    Carrera S side decal.jpg

More pictures from inside the brochure - all including side decals...

    Carrera S side decal3.jpg

    Carrera S side decal4.jpg

    Carrera S side decal5.jpg

I think the best example is this one, which I've 'borrowed' from another forum..Smiley

The logo is in matte black and I think will suit my Basalt C2S without being overpowering or ostentatious?

    1258202330851Carrera S decals.jpg

There is little doubt that the car's colour is critical when it comes to logos...

Below is the only example I can find on a silver car like yours... and I think that may prove somewhat over-the-top. Smiley

I would appreciate any further comments... thanks..Smiley

@John H: Hi there, as you know, the temperature has dropped a few more degrees this week - after a freezing cold start this morning, the short shifter has still been absolutely fine Smiley

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

Thanks Easy - I'm totally sold on the short shifter... I'll be having it fitted when I've chosen my new wheels and decided on the decal/side logo issue.

Still not sure about the latter as it's proving difficult to view a 997 with them on.

Also I'm testing the new Turbo soon which will be with PDK... if it goes the way I expect, it would be foolish to spend money on my current car.

I would want to get a deposit down on the Turbo before VAT increases in about a month's time.

IMO you'd be daft not to fit it.  I've had mine now for a few years and to be honest I've never had an issue.  I guarantee you'll not go back.  Best £380 I've spent on the car, period.  Dunno what all the fuss is about, just do it.

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

From the moment I first tried one in a Boxster loaner, I knew it was a must have option

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

The best price I've been quoted for the short shifter is a total of £405.00 from an OPC quite a long way from my home.

    My local OPC has quoted £239.63 for the part + £120 to fit (1 hour's labour) +VAT = £411.29...

Will probably take the latter, but how does this compare with others?

Easy's price of £315.00 fitted seems to be a bargain.

How can the price vary so much between OPC's...

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

Hi John.  I got an Indy to do it.  The price of the part was more or less the same but the labour element was less.  Cost me £350 fitted.  Not as good as Easy but we we're not in deep recession back then.

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

Thanks Rich - I'm not familiar with a good Indy these days, so will probably use the local OPC.  Suppose I shouldn't quibble over 50 or 60 quid and may get a better price if I also have them fit new wheels etc.

Am having to put a new turbo on hold though.

Two reasons... I had thought that, by placing a deposit now, I'd save on the price increase when VAT goes back to 17.5% on 1st January.  No deal..!  Unless the car is invoiced, paid for in full and delivered this month, the price will be at the increased level.   If I ordered now - delivery would be in June at the earliest.

Also, the trade-in value of my '05 997 C2S (well specced including PSE) with 35,000 miles, is currently placed at just below £30K..  That's a hit of around £45K in under 5 years. And I don't even test-drive the turbo until late January..!

I could try to sell mine privately I suppose but, to be honest, your comment re the turbo being "a definite licence loser" has also kinda lessened it's appeal a bit..

We'll have to see what the new year brings..

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

The VAT increase makes a big difference doesn't it?  I believe the official line from the VAT office is that if it's invoiced before the 1st Jan then the 15% applies, regardless of when it's paid!

The Turbo is rather nice to be fair and if I'm completely honest with myself, as I don't do "that" many track days the Turbo would be a far better day to day car for me.  However, a second hand 997 GT3 (Gen 1) would certainly tempt me. :)

The trade in value just made me wince a little.  The only option is to sell privately.  I mean a 997 C2S for £35k.  At that price everyone will be driving one soon!

Have a good Christmas and New Year and I look forward to hearing what you eventually go for.

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

In France it costs 408€ TTC, and around 500€ installed.

    Re: Fitting a short shifter

In the US the part was $199 and installation was $100 so $299 total.

John - sorry to hear this - but I know you'll make the right decision Smiley

I have to say that I'm not tempted by a 997.2 TT. Currently, the only model that could make me want a new 911 so badly that I would consider taking the depreciation hit on my 997.1 C2S is a 997.2 GT3. Even then, I still have no plans to part with my 997.1 C2S. I really do love this car. It's the only car that will ever be 'my first Porsche'. Plus it's worked flawlessly. I got back from a 28 day vacation in Australia and, on Sunday, when I went to the supermarket to re-stock the fridge, it started first time. No flat battery - despite all the freezing weather.
