Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

    Smiley

Of all the days of the year... 10 minutes into my drive to the golf range, accelerating gently in 6th gear (manual) from cruising at 100kph, the car suddenly starts vibrating like crazy, and within a few seconds the engine light and message come on "drive to service station".

The engine still runs, but with very little power and a real deep vibration any time you accelerate anything more than a hair.  I've limped home (via the range of course!) and await the workshop opening again on Monday, but any guesses as to the cause?  It's a 2007 car with 80kkm and full service, lastly at 60kkm.

Nothing to report about the conditions except it was quite cold,3celcius.  The car is garaged so wont have ever been that cold.

    Thanks, Daniel

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

    Daniel,

I have had a similar problem on a Cayenne but without the CEL. It turned out that the driveshaft had failed. I have not heard of that problem in a 911 though. Another possibility is an ignition problem where you are getting several cylinder misfires at once. That will cause vibration and a CEL. If you have access to a Durametric tool or even a generic engine code reader you will get a much better idea of what the problem is.

    I hope its nothing major!

    Mike

Me too! CEL=check engine light I guess. Thanks for the quick response.

"but with very little power and a real deep vibration any time you accelerate anything more than a hair."

This almost surely will turn out to be an electrical/electronic problem.  I'm guessing they will replace the Motronic ECM.

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

I had a similar problem with my first Cayenne with severe vibration and a loss of power. It happened to me on a busy motorway junction   Turned out to be a fuel pump failure in my case.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. Ideas to date point towards nothing too "terminal". D

    Update??

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

So I just got back from picking the car up.

I turns out it was just a failed "spark plug cable" on cylinder one.  Apparently nowdays its not a cable but something electronic and therefore costs 100usd.  The final bill was 300usd including the diagnostics, parts, labour and taxes.

I dont know what US costs are like, but here in Switzerland a service costs 800-1000usd, so 300usd is cheap. Mightily relieved as I was expecting another 0 on the end...

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

    Great news Daniel!

That is very steep for a spark plug cable!!

Service in the US is about $100-120/hour. I would guess that would have been about the same price here perhaps a little less.

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

I looked it up a bit more... apparently it's a spark plug mounted direct ignition coil and these retail at 50usd online, so 70 (in fact) for a dealer sourced OEM part is reasonable.

    Case closed. Thanks all. D

Re: Arghh engine problem, on Boxing Day, likely cause?

PS not quite sure how it takes an hour to fit one and an hour to detect the problem.  I thought in the 997 the spark plugs were easily accessed?

They did however vacuum and wash the car!
