What are they going to do with the canvastop?

It looks so "clean".... is this a dream or a cover-up?

I definitrely like the shorter overhangs front and rear.  You can definitely see the longer wheelbase (longer space between door and rear wheel opening)..

Indeed, all complaints about a longer wheelbase are unnecessary IMHO. Apart from the handling benefits it makes the car´s stance more prominent, the 911´s short wheelbase and long overhangs had to be visually toned down on the previous versions.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Never seen a canvas top, w/ the inevitable mechanism below, look that clean. IMHO the pictures above are fabric stretched over metal. The rumored stretched wheelbase could more easily accomodate a folding metal top.

But it will lose its go-kart dynamics. It will cease to be a 911.

    ADias:

But it will lose its go-kart dynamics. It will cease to be a 911.

Please define go-kart dynamics. The characteristics on the 911´s layout are, apart from the uniqueness, the superior traction, the uncommon aural impression with the engine working in the back of the car and the "playful" behaviour under dynamic wheel load changes. None of this will be gone once you lenghten the wheelbase by a certain amount but the car will get more stable at high speeds.

The limiting factor for me on the 997 is its turn-in response which isn´t restricted by the wheelbase or steering ratio but by the low weight over the front axle. On that account, isn´t it interesting that Porsche increased the front tires´ size on the GT3 RS for better turn-in? After all, these elements are just one part of the puzzle to a complete car, not the one decisive element.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

The wheelbase on the new 991 will increase by 4 inches.  It's interesting to note that the current wheelbase of the 997 is 92.5 inches whereas the Boxster /Cayman line has a wheelbase of 95.1 inches, nearly 2 1/2 inches longer than the Carrera..  The longer wheelbase in the Boxster/Cayman in NO WAY gives up handling prowess !

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Looks like there is room in the "back" for a 120 degree V8..........say 4.4 litre and 450HP!

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Hmm, it also looks like they ditched the classic headlights again... almost seems like CGT style headlights? (If you look closely, they arent oval or round anymore. Also, where the washers are, seems to be pointy-shaped...)

I read somewhere that when the new VW management saw the proposed  design, they rejected it as unexciting and requested more changes, despite Porsche engineers' complaints about added costs.  Regarding added costs, Piech reportedly said it's our money, not yours, we are spending...

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Misha, I did a little bit of red-lining too, to illustrate my point.
Seems like there is an awfull lot of camo around the front area still. (Thus the rivets and the camo lines). However, if you try to see through it, you see some contours that worry me a bit, I outlined them dashed. Hope I'm wrong though! ;-)image.png.jpg

Joost i see your concern, but the fact that the wiper things are where they are tells me the lights will be mostly like we see. I think there will be some kink in the inner lower part a la boxster. The left light in current disguise is very Alfa....

+1 i do think it has 959 elements currently. Im hoping for a bumper like the boxster spyder, nice and aggressive!

I like the idea of a 4.0L GT1 block too, but I'm sure the 9A1 was designed with a fair bit of headroom to expand beyond 4.0L.  I also remember hearing that it's a modular design and could be built as a Flat-4 or Flat-8 as well...

That is good information - I think you are correct.  I also think it may be possible to make the bore and/or stroke even larger in the future with this block.

    Porsche 911 GT3 R

Stuttgart. Following the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is entering yet another racing car in the 2010 motorsport season: The 911 GT3 R will be raced in series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, thus succeeding the 911 GT3 Cup S. The main focus in developing this new model was on even better drivability and even easier handling.

The 911 GT3 R is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering maximum output of 480 bhp (353 kW) transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed dog gearbox.

The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R weighing just 1,200 kg or 2,646 lb was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup presented in September for one-make cup racing. Thanks to its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model. Both cars are based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS street-legal sports car.

An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with "throttle-blip" function make it much easier to get used to this new GT3 racing car than its predecessor, meaning that the new model is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver.

Flared wheel arches added on to the body both front and rear bear clear testimony to the wider track than on the former model. And like all second-generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Birmingham Motor Show. The car is built by Porsche's Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to Customer Teams the world over as of spring 2010. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is 279,000 euros plus local sales tax/VAT.

    Engine:
