997.2 GT3 and 997.2 Turbo PDK Test Drive

I went for a test drive with the 997.2 GT3 and 997.2 Turbo PDK today. Both amazing cars and it is surprising how two different types of the same car model can feel so different.

The GT3 had Club Sport package, PCM navigation and 12k km on the clock. The first thing that struck me was the hard clutch. No servo there Smiley The gear shifting was very precise and the engine simply fantastic. Very smooth and civilized, it pulled nicely from low RPM and then... opened up and was on fire over 5000 RPM. What a sound! Addictive Smiley It was only 10C outside, damp and the car had Cup tires so I did not drive it that hard, but enough to fall in love.

Then I changed to the Turbo with PDK, Paddles, Sport Plus, etc. The car had just been delivered a few days earlier and had only 100 km on the clock. Compared to the GT3 it it felt like stepping in to a comfortable limousine. Off we went and it immediately struck me how easy it was drive, especially in combination with the PDK. No effort compared to the GT3. I went out on the highway and did a few acceleration tests and played with the paddles forth and back. Very quick shifting and... the power and acceleration of that car is just mental! Smiley Seems like the perfect marriage, a turbo engine and the PDK gearbox.

After returning the cars I came to the conclusion that there is no way to choose which one to get. They are both excellent cars, but one cannot compare them with each other. I guess there is only one solution... get both Smiley

So which one will I see you in next time we meet ?

I was supposed to try the Turbo on friday, but I cancelled due to the rain..... I need dry roads to do a proper test

    Will go next week.

So... you only have one choice : which one would you pick ?

I also tried the GT3...  Damn -  need one now! Smiley

Reminded me more of my 993 RS-a-like than the 997.1S I had.  Fantastic engine and sound..  For me, that's what 911s should be like.

     Problem easily solved!  Smiley

Just get yourself a GT3 and put the "911S" logo on the engine cover.  Smiley

Thanks Blue, that is exactly the comparo we need, never mind all those other "brands" Smiley

Anyway, it sounds as if, at this  point, the choice would depend on weather you want a Red car or a Black car Smiley

Yeah, kind of like choosing your favorite child isn't it?

     have u tried the GT3.1

if yes, is the GT3.2 worth the extra $$$ over the mkI??

    Gnil:

Hey Gnil! If I change it will be for a GT3.

In my view, these are the pros (and reversely the cons) for the cars:

    Turbo

    - Everyday and year round usability (comfort, safety, all-wheel drive, etc.)

    - Rear seats (although questionable use)

    GT3

    - Driver's involvement (steering, gearbox, engine response, etc.)

    - Price

    - Resale value

    - Rarity

    - Sound!

Both cars are very fast, have excellent handling, etc. I could not comment on whether one is better than the other in this area. I would have to try them on a track, but I fear my driving skills are not sufficient anyway Smiley From straight line performance alone, there was not a big difference between the cars. Surely the Turbo has more torque and catapults furiously once the turbos spool up, but the GT3 engine has much more direct response and linear power. While the Turbo is faster on paper, the GT3 'felt' every bit as fast, which must be down to involvement and sound.

Verdict: Since I am not looking for a daily driver, but rather an exciting weekend (and occasional trackday) car, the GT3 fits me better.

Blue, you have managed to distill potentially endless pages of debate into a few very telling arguments, thank you.Smiley

I will print your comments and use them when I am ready to make a move.Smiley

I'm with you on the GT3 but damn that TT PDK is a great package!

Both are truly great cars and which ever you choose you will not be disappointed. In my case the GT3 fits better (since I cannot afford both Smiley).
