    My California has arrived

I took delivery today and love the way it has turned out. Bianco Avus with Cuoio (saddle tan). It started to rain so I didn't get any top down shots as yet.

Excellent car Iain, congrats mate!  The California offers supercar levels of performance and GT levels of comfort in the same package. Perfect combination of a "usable yet real Ferrari".

PS: That delivery truck driver must feel your house as a second home by now.

Smiley He is a "frequent visitor". He's a nice old chap and very professional. He'll be back in a week or so to return my Scud from it's service.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. I tried to make the car a little more special without being (hopefully) brash. The colours really look great when the roof is down. I'll try and get pics over the weekend if the weather improves.

    Re: My California has arrived

    Alex,

The car makes a fabulous noise when starting from cold. It really barks into life with an initial throttle blip programmed in by Ferrari's engineers for good measure before it settles down to an idle

    Re: My California has arrived

    Congrats, it looks very classy!

Very good and unusual colour scheme

I wish they made a coupe version of this nice car with less weight , better rear space and lower and more harmonious rear deck.

If they made something like this, I could consider a Ferrari for the first time in my life!

    Re: My California has arrived

Though the California is not my favourite Ferrari (but a great car BTW) and though I still don't like the fat rear end, I have to say in this special colour combo it looks good.

    Enjoy in good health, Iain.

    Re: My California has arrived

     Congrats, amazing car!

    Re: My California has arrived

I have to say the build quality on this car is superb. I know the 599 and 612 had already achieved this level of quality but I've never spent time in either of those models. At last it feels like you are actually getting an interior worthy of the price tag with high quality materials, excellent fit and attention to detail on the finish. And the ergonomics of the layout are now intuitive as opposed to the old school Italian "fit a switch where you can" approach

It's also a pleasant surprise to have a hi-fi system that actually sounds good in a Ferrari The touch screen media unit is child's play to use and pairing my phone took around 60 seconds.... and that was without reading the manual Transferring albums from a memory stick to the hard drive was also very quick and easy. How often I'll use the sound system remains to be seen but it's good to know it's there for longer trips.

The tft screen display in the instrument binnacle is very simple to operate and easy to read on the move. That bodes well for the 458 which uses two similar screens to control auxilliary functions.

I know this model didn't exactly gain universal praise when launched but I've got a suspicion that it's going to earn greater respect as time goes buy and the debate on the styling dies down. The DCT box is fantastic and really gets the best out of the engine as can be seen from the performance figures set in road tests when you consider how heavy the car is (it doesn't feel heavy when driving it by the way). The thought of how good it must be in the 458 with even faster shift times and more BHP has me salivating Smiley

I don't regret switching out of my 430 spider for it at all now. If Ferrari come up with the goods on the folding hard top roof for the 458 spider then that car is going to be an absolute blast to own IMHO

Now if only it would stop raining I might be able to get out and enjoy some top down driving.

    Re: My California has arrived

Wish to share more comparo with the 430? Also what do you think of the rear seats for small children?

    Re: My California has arrived

In my opinion the California is the thinking man's Ferrari.

The price is definitely high but not ridiculous, it is car which you can use for daily  transport and even for traveling, it is good looking without being excessively and unecessarily ostentatious and its performance is more than adequate for the real world. The interior looks very classy from the pictures above as opposed to the video-console-look of the 458 Italia. It is a combined performance car and  exquisite prestige car.

If Porsche were asked to come up with a Ferrari, it would have been something similar to the California in concept. And that is a compliment

I wished they didn't use the vario-roof though. A  choice of  a Coupe with more space, less weight and a classic soft top Cabrio would have been preferable for me. Doing away with the folding top, would also allow designers to come up with a better looking rear.

    Re: My California has arrived

The Coupe is the 612... The vario roof is IMHO an integral part of the California.

    Re: My California has arrived

    congrats !

    Re: My California has arrived

Many many congrats the color combo is amazing. any doubts i had about the design of this car just vanished when i saw yours in white. its an extremely good looking car. enjoy !! and post some topless pics as soon as you can.

    Re: My California has arrived

    SciFrog:

I'll give more thoughts against the 430 spider when I've done a few more miles SciFrog. It's certainly not as sharp or delicate as the 430 but that's to be expected as the engine is out front placing far more weight over the steering. Thats not a negative just a different type of drive.

As far as the rear seats go they are pretty small and the backrest is vertical. If the driver and front passenger were 5'7" or smaller then I'd say you could fit small children in the back for shorter trips. I've seen pics on Fchat of some owners cars with two under 10's sitting in the back looking quite happy.
