    It's been 3 years since I collected my 997.1 C2S

    Hi guys, it's been 3 years since I collected my 997.1 C2S from the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen Smiley I've enjoyed another great year with this wonderful car that never ceases to amaze and thrill me Smiley

    This past year I have enjoyed some wonderful driving courses at the Porsche Sport Driving School in France. These courses have enabled me to improve my driving skills so that I can derive even greater pleasure from driving my 997.1 C2S. The limiting factor had not been the car, it was me Smiley However, I made good progress in overcoming that limitation this past year Smiley

    My car has now completed 16000 miles (25750 km). So far, it's been running flawlessly Smiley The cost of running this car has been perfectly reasonable. Unfortunately, the annual road tax has now increased to GBP405. The Cobra PVTS annual subscription has increased to GBP195. And since my car is now 3 years old, I had to obtain its first MOT certificate (which confirms it is roadworthy) which cost a further GBP48.

    Other than that, I haven't had to spend anything on servicing or maintenance during the past year.

    It hasn't needed any topping up of engine oil over the past year even though I drove the car very hard for 3 days on a track in Magny-Cours. The last time I topped up the engine oil myself was nearly 2 years ago at 10100 miles. A complete engine oil change was done 1 year ago at 12285 miles when my car had its first minor service done. Now, after 3 years ownership at 15996 miles, (i.e. after a further 3711 miles since the minor service and after a further 5896 miles since I last topped up the engine oil myself), I have still not needed any further top ups of engine oil. That means that, apart from the engine oil change at 12285 miles, I have actually only topped up the engine oil by 1300 ml in total over 15992 miles (NB there were 4 miles on the odometer when I collected the car from the factory at Zuffenhausen). That's only 0.0813 ml per mile.

    I imagine that the 1 litre bottle of Mobil 1 engine oil that I carry around with me in the car (that still has 700 ml left in it) must surely by now have lost its viscosity since it has been open for nearly 2 years. If I ever have to top up with engine oil, I will simply get a new bottle. I wouldn't want to add engine oil that may have lost its viscosity.

    A Porsche dealer also did a complimentary annual inspection for me (when installing my short shifter) after I returned from the Porsche Sport Driving School at Magny-Cours and confirmed that everything was fine. They only needed to add a little brake fluid (due to all the repeated hard braking on the track). I thought I might need to replace the tyres and/or brake pads after doing those courses but nope Smiley They're not necessary yet Smiley The brake pads still have plenty of wear left. The tyres have between 3-5 mm of treadwear left on the inner, central and outer parts of the middle 75% of all 4 tyres. So I intend to use them for as long as I can - including some track driving next year - and then change them after that (if need be). I may even get nearly 20000 miles out of them. All year round, I use a partial load setting of 2.4 bar tyre pressure for the front tyres and 2.8 bar tyre pressure for the rear tyres. Smiley

    All I can say is that I really, really love this car Smiley I take care of it - and it takes care of me Smiley

    I would also like to express my sincere thanks and deep appreciation to all of you for your help, advice and, most of all, friendship. Rennteam remains a very special place and your friendship means a lot to me Smiley

    Loved every one of your threads Easy!! Many thanks for letting us live these wonderful experiences with us. It is much appreciated and the pictures are of great quality.

    Needless to say, your Western USA trip has shaped much of my plan to travel down south this next summer. Especially the national parks such as Dixie and Glen and Canyonlands parks are a must for me now. As for this here is my current plan. Time allowed will be 3 to 4 weeks but i think it can be done in 2 weeks with some serious driving...

    Any additional comments would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for all your time spend on here sharing your experiences and cheers to many more trips and happy times!!!!

    @Joost: thanks man

    @Atzporsche: thanks v much

    If I were you I would create a separate tour planning thread asking for guys here to give you suggestions/advice. You can learn so much from other Rennteamers who live in the USA or who have travelled there before.

    As a general point, when planning any tour, it's very important to allow enough time in each place to enjoy each place the way you would like to enjoy it. Otherwise, you can end up just driving all the time which can become exhausting - i.e. it's not a holiday anymore - and when it's over, you'll wish you had spent more time in each place to see/enjoy them properly.

    You've left out the Big Sur Coastline (Pacific Coast Highway) between Monterey and San Luis Obispo. If you've done it before, then no problem - but if you haven't, you're really missing something special. On your way south, you could come inland to Yosemite NP and then head back to the coast via SF etc so that you can do the Big Sur Coast drive (rather than heading inland towards Yosemite NP after visiting the SF Bay Area).

    If you need to cut bits out, San Diego is optional IMvHO (but don't tell nberry I said that! ). Zion NP and Capitol Reef National Park are also optional IMvHO but I would try to fit Monument Valley and Arches NP in (if you can). They really are must-see places. Your jaw will literally drop open when you go there!

    Also, in Wyoming, on your route map, it's Yellowstone NP (not Yosemite NP)  BTW you'll pass the awesome mountain range of Grand Teton NP on the way Smiley

    Good luck - planning an exciting trip like this is always a lot of fun!

    Re: It's been 3 years since I collected my 997.1 C2S

    @easy - happy birthday to your car Smiley - about six weeks after mine, and pleased to read you are enjoying your car as much as we are ours. Not had much use to write about this year, sadly, as most of my leave was used up with our house extension. Here's hoping next year as we've already got a week in Germany planned for the early summer (Maybe a 'Ring Meet)? and back to our beloved Yorkshire Dales in September.

    @atzporsche - love your route - but it looks like Yosemite has moved since I was last there? Smiley

    @dreamcar: thanks v much

    And many sincere and warm congratulations to you too on the third birthday of your wonderful 987S

    It was wonderful to see your car not long ago at The Kennels and it's obvious you take excellent care of it  You obviously love it very much

    Trips to the Nordschleife and to the Yorkshire Dales sound like they'll be a lot of fun Smiley Hope you enjoy them to the max Smiley Smiley Smiley No doubt, you'll also have the great pleasure of meeting up with Porsche-Jeck too as you pass through Germany Smiley

    I still haven't found time to visit the Yorkshire Dales and the Cotswolds in my 997.1 C2S - hopefully I will be able to do so sometime next Summer Smiley

    Great update, and fantastic contributions.

    Re: It's been 3 years since I collected my 997.1 C2S

    @easy: Thanks for the tips, yes that Yellowstone park is a typo. I will do a seperate threat later on this winter when the plan is more final. I will keep your coast suggestion in mind though because as far as google shows it is stunning indeed! Thanks for the tips and never stop posting!!

    Re: It's been 3 years since I collected my 997.1 C2S

     A few thoughts for you. Since you want to see Yosemite anyway, the California Gold Country is worth thinking about and Highway 49 is stunning to drive through the Western Sierras. While you're in the San Francisco area, if you're into wine and food, Napa Valley is close by. Alternatively, you could spend some time doing that in the Santa Barbara area too. Sounds like a great trip you have planned.
