I disagree.  The weight savings come from foregoing creature comforts (no A/C, no radio, Race bucket seats without heaters, no mechanical top, etc.)

I like the fact that "spyder" mean spyder on this model (versus RS Syder).

Does anyone know what is under the rear lid?  The gaps make me hope that the engine compartment is very accessible...

I won't buy one, but I think this will be a plus for Porsche.

Re: Official - Porsche Boxster Spyder

The idea is interesting, the execution isn't too good in my opinion.

The Boxster Spyder looks like a Carrera GT caricature, the technical specs aren't too impressive either.

First car of this kind I would have wanted to see from Porsche: a Cayman S with 150 kg less weight, ripped off from any comfort features but including a professional race chassis and a programmable throttle/PDK management. Price tag: same as "standard" Cayman S.

Second car of this kind I would have wanted to see from Porsche: a 997 Carrera with base engine, 150 kg less, race chassis, etc. for at least 10000 EUR below the price tag of the regular 997 Carrera.

I'm pretty sure the Boxster Spyder will sell, especially in non-European markets but I would NEVER EVER buy this thing.

well at least some innovative features....like the roof fastening for example.

porsche might be heading in the right direction again.

i love the renderings of the 991 on autiobild. that is a very cool looking car.

Re: Official - Porsche Boxster Spyder

Looks like they stuffed a Boxster, a CGT, a GT3 and a GT3RS in a blender and that was the end result. It has some good elements but I think they (more likely, we) would have been better served if they did something similar to the Cayman. That would have cut into 911 sales though probably.

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

This is a REALLY LAME effort by Porsche:  dress up a Boxster S with built-in speedester humps, lob off some weight by eliminating A/C, door handles (!!), add some 10 hp, and substitute a Pontiac Solstice top that is useless in inclement weather, and call it a third Boxster line !  I think NOT.  There is NOTHING about this car that would cause me to remotely desire it.  Smiley

You're not supposed to use the tarp - it's just to keep the sun off the leather when parked.

Not even the -20mm Sport Suspension, LSD, Carbon Bucket Race seats, Lightweight 19" wheels, GT3 Steering Wheel and other Alcantara interior bits, and extra power which are all given virtually for free, compared to a Boxster S???

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

I think it looks great, I love even with the roof on, it makes it even more special, just like a speedster, imagine when you close the windows with the roof on, it must look great!!!! The exterior design looks insane, I love it!!! I am only concerned about the roof, it will close 100& the interior cabin?, I hope so, if not my interest in this car will completely dissappear, for example the leather smell will disappear in some weeks, and where are is this car suppose to be park in???, if the interior can be accesible if the roof does not closes 100%.....its something I really want to know. LSD, -20mm, 320bhp and 115kg less, is probably much fun than a 997pdk, that easily is 30.000€ more. I'm really intested in this baby carrera gt!!!

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

This is the sort of car that everybody says they want but decide not to purchase for all the obvious reasons.  The top is an afterthought and apparently does not seal the cabin, as such it clearly cannot serve as a daily driver unless you are able to control the weather.  This typically excludes the majority of buyers in this price range who require a multipurpose car, not a dedicated fair weather or track toy to add to the stable. I don't think the specifications are bad and the pricing is attractive vs. content (at least by Porsche's recent standards), but the styling, at least in the photos seems strangely proportioned. This may improve in three dimensions.

I agree.  I wouldn't order this car without a removable hard top (soft top wouldn't work in Denver on many days).  I still have hope that the Cayman version (maybe with Carrera engine) is going to be a better choice for me (and many others).

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

This car is perfect summer vehicle for the part of the Bay Area I live in as well as Lake Tahoe that time of year .

Between May and Nov , it almost never rains  and I have run the A/C on my Porsche weekend toy a few minutes a month only to keep the compressor working, as it's never warmer than 80 degrees here except for maybe 10 days a year and there is no humidity.

All I have to do is drive between SF and Tahoe early AM or late evening to avoid the daily 110 degree heat in the agricultural " irrigated desert " better known as the Central Valley.

    I love it !

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

Wouldn't be surprised at all if the styling could turn out to be like the hunchback Panamera in that when viewed in person, and in the right color like black, it will look a heck of a lot better.

I've been looking for a replacement for my 987S 3.2 and unfortunately this wont be it. I just hate  to buy a car with an appearance that really doesn't make a solid first impression and has to grow on me, no matter how fun the drive might be. If they had used the Spyder as an opportunity to go with a more classic front headlight and intake design, redone the Japanese looking tail lights and dropped the cheap looking black plastic rear duffusers, I might have ordered one. I still think the 987.1 is by far the best looking Boxster design ever.

Not really - too warm in the summer unless you never leave the shoreline and they have some humidity. I've spent time in SD/Ja Jolla and it's tough there w/o A/C in a car because of the southern latitude /high intense sun.

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

Whenever I've been in La Jolla, it's always been low 70's with a bit of wispy coastal cloud cover - pretty perfect.  I'm sure it gets hot quickly as you go east though...

I agree, and say the same about the 997.1 as well. That said, each permutation of the 987 offers a little something new here n' there that's appreciated. On this particular Spyder, I do like the intakes, and wouldn't mind running a pair on my own car.

I wonder what the Spyder would look like if Porsche started from a Cayman S and made it a T-top of sorts.

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

Okay, it  has taken 24 hours to get over the initial shock, but it is starting to grow on me.   Also, how can you ignore the bargain price (as compared to a stock S with similar equipment).   I believe that Porsche has a winner on its hands.

Now, I can tell you what I would have preferred... a stock roof  Boxster S, with insulation and double lining of the roof removed, lighter body panels, but this Spyder version is darn close.

All in all, life is good to have so many great choices.   Can't wait to see it in person at the L.A. AutoShow

Just one thing.. er... does this car still have the rear boot? And if yes.... it means that you have to open all that rear panel? Because I don't see any cut line ....

Why try to build a roofless version of a car that is in essention a version with a roof of a roadster car?!? Would not make sense to me!
