Re: Official - Porsche Boxster Spyder

That looks fantastic ! the back has a very CGT feel about it.

Re: Official - Porsche Boxster Spyder

Wow, 115 kg less, wonder where they got rid of over 250 lbs from? Not sure yet if I like the styling but definitely should be a lot of fun to drive.

Re: Official - Porsche Boxster Spyder

The styling will need to grow on me, but the performance looks to be promising.

Porsche unveils its long awaited new Speedster, the 316bhp Boxster Spyder...

    (5 November 2009)

A legendary name from Porsche’s back catalogue is back. Say hello to the Boxster Spyder, a modern day incarnation of the firm’s speedster body-style.

Porsche is keen to big up the car’s lightweight characteristics, the Spyder dropping 80kg from the conventional Boxster S roadster it’s based on. At 1275kg, though, it still weighs more than twice that of its distant 550 Spyder ancestor.

It’s the lightest current Porsche on sale, however, and with a 316bhp 3.4-litre flat-six engine (10bhp up on the Boxster S) sitting in the middle it should be plenty quick enough. It does the 0-62mph dash in 4.8sec, nearly half a second quicker than the S, and hits 166mph.

The latter’s only with the roof off, mind. We wouldn’t advise trying it with the canvas top on, as even Porsche comes close to admitting it’s a bit of a token effort. They say, for instance, that the Spyder ‘has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air’. Looking closely at the roof-up picture, it certainly doesn’t look the most snug or secure solution to sealing a car.

As well as the obvious, there are further tweaks to distance the Spyder from its Boxster siblings, including sharper sports suspension to suit its more purist attitude.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder will be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show in December, with sales following in February 2010. Expect a UK price of around £45,000, with the company’s PDK twin-clutch gearbox on the options list. The Spyder is not a limited-run special edition, but will be built to order, Porsche anticipating low production numbers to reflect the car’s specialist nature.

Light, Efficient, Open: Boxster Spyder Making World Debut in Los Angeles

    2010-Porsche-Boxster-Spyder_banner.jpg

Purist Mid-Engined Roadster is the Lightest Porsche...

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car - light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche's most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche's mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph - with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility com-bined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro, or GBP44,643 (inc VAT) in the UK market.

     Thanks so much guys!
I love it! Porsche actually listened to the customers this time: Lighter and stronger, and not the stupid aerokit speedster humps, but a proper speedster this time.

I guess they have prevented it from canibalizing on the 911 byt making sure that the roof is only a "flimsy" thing, instead of a full clioth roof.

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

    I like it very much.

The absence of A/C and a sturdy roof limits the car to special climates, though.

It's an additional car for sunny (but not hot) days, for a drive just for fun but not for transport. Not suitable for me (especially with no air conditioning) but I expect many people to buy it.

Typical Porsche you pay more for less . Moreover, PSE is only optional on a car like that!

I am not clear if the -20mm suspension is PASM or normal dampers? Anyone knows?

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

The really great news is that production of the new Boxster Spyder must significantly increase the probability that Porsche will finally launch a "lightweight" Cayman RS at some point during the next twelve months...

    Porsche-Cayman-RS.jpg

...now that would be truly awesome!!!

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

Did anyone notice the paddles on the steering wheel?   My hunch is that this will be an optional steering wheel with PDK, in place of the much criticized buttons, as first offered on the 911 Turbo.

Also, I am a bit disappointed that they are calling it a Spyder and would have preferred the Speedster nameplate.   Perhaps Porsche is reserving that for a 2-seat limited version of the 911, with a slightly shorter windscreen.

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

    I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only thing that gives me to think is if it will be available A/C and also how does the roof works?, I mean just looking from the pics we can see the roof has to be totally manual ala carrera gt...but I hope the cabin is totally closed once the roof is on....for rainy days and stuff, I dont think Porsche has design a roof that is not closed with cabin 100%, but judging from the pics, specially from the rear of the roof, I dont know what to think.

I love the looks with the roof on, I simply love it...Sounds great too, lets hope this can be ordered also with PSE....

So spec would be like this :

    Boxster Spyder : 64.000€

PDK: about 4.000€ (specially if the f1 paddles are also a option)

    PSE: 2.000€

    Sport Chrono PLUS: 800€

And may be backet seats, add another 5.000€ (will only add up this option, if the total price isnt ridiculous high)

TOTAL: About 75.000€ with very good options. Not bad at all, and this is without at least a minimum discount from dealer.

Will see what happens in the next months !!!!!!

Also what about PCM?, and having a cd-audio system?, not bose though....I dont see anything of this in any pics ???

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

It looks like the roof attaches to those red hooks on the rear of the car which would be totally manual & appears like they've eliminated cabriolet roof motors & even much of the steel in a cabs roof structure so a lot of the weight loss would be due to the above I guess. I think your observation could be right ; it doesn't look like the cabin would be sealed with the roof on, don't see how it could be .

"Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather"

So basically a sunny day toy......

Re: Porsche Boxster Spyder: Official Press Release...

Sorry, doesn't excite me visually like the 'normal' Boxster does - I think the humps spoil the clean lines of the Boxster, and now it looks too much like it's mimicking the 911.  I loved the practicality of my Boxster, and this ruins that as well.  Love the instrument binnacle without the hood, though (I so wanted to remove the binnacle of my Boxster, but the bloody OPC guys didn't let me!)

I love it. Did you guys notice the door handles are ala GT3 RS those red manual pulling features from racing!!! I bet that is where they saved the weight haha.

No i really like it. New lights, new bumpers, CGT elements in the rear, especially the 3rd brake light.

I wonder if it will be possible to have a removable hard-top?  The soft-top looks useless.

Price is very good at US$61,200 with 19" wheels, LSD, -20mm Sport Suspension, Carbon race buckets, etc.
