    Panamera turbo - AMG E63: SportAuto test data

    While the Supertest is delayed SportAuto now did a solo test of the Panamera turbo. The same issue also contains a solo test of AMG's new E63 (with Ceramic brake option). Both cars were tested on regular tires (i.e. no semic slicks).

    In summary, my impression is that the E63 seems to be a very well made car. Obviously, a weight advantage of about 150kg and an additional 25hp are an asset the E63 seems to use.

    In essence, all key test data is pretty close for both cars:

    (Panamera turbo vs. E63)

    0-100 kph: 4.1s vs. 4.5s

    0-200 hph: 14.5s vs. 14.6s

    200-0 kph: 145m vs. 146.8m

    Lap time Hockenheim: 1.13,7 vs. 1.14,0

    Average fuel consumption: 19.7 l/100km vs. 17.9

     

    The verbal explanations seem to praise the Panamera a bit more (handling, steering). Also, AWD is an advantage as far as traction on wet roads is concerned. However, given the price difference and Porsche's explicit focus on building the best sporty limousine I have to admit that Mercedes did an excellent job in case of the E63 Smiley

    BTW, some Hockenheim test data from the same test for other AMG models:

    SL63: 1.15,0 (they say: same suspension setup but higher weight...)

    C63: 1.15,7

    CLS63: 1.18,5

     

    0-200 data are as follows:

    SL63: 15.3s

    C63: 14.6s

    CLS63: 15.4

    Please ! give me a break , How can you even compare an E with a Panamera ,get inside and you can smell ,and see ,the inside of  the Panamera this car is in a different league

    IMO the E wins easy, it is simply the better looking car with good performance and some sound.

     I don't agree...For me, the two most important factors when "ranking" a sporty car are performance and drive feel. Performance of the two cars is very close - as highlighted by the above test data. Drive feel can only be tested by actually test driving the two cars.

    better review - car should be in a better color like black, maroon, or blue

    Markus, I fully agree with you.

    It seems to me that German car press actually do not love Panamera too much at all. In latest AMS Panamers 4S loose big time comparison test against 750i X drive. Same story in latest Auto Bild where Panamera S was last against 750i and S500. In all recent comparison test in German car magazines three shortcoming are highlighted:

    -poor ride comfort in comparison to BMW 7 series and Mercedes S-class

    -PDK not nearly as smooth at low speed as automatics at 7 series/S-class

    -trunk size on A4/3 series/C-class level and interior space too small for car size

     

    Panamera is the most expensive car in its class also. Excellent drive dynamics? Of course BUT, IMHO this is not most important criteria in this class.

    Panamera is the car for buyer that wants Porsche in this class. With all its shortcomings...

    your summary of recent test results is very interesting. Somehow it appears that it is very difficult to successfully place a product like the Panamera: 7series and S-Class buyers might think it is "too sporty", "not comfortable enough".

    Then other buyers (like us Smiley) complain that the car is not sporty enough (as an "ordinary" AMG E63 delivers the same level of performance...).

    Difficult task for Porsche indeed. And the task gets even more difficult when you also consider pricing...

    Good posts and comments.  I look forward to a direct car to car comparison.  Mercedes 6.3s have been around since the 1970s and have always been fast off the line.  Does it handle well, that's the question.  The Hockenheim times would seem to indicate yes, but a more complete comparison (drive feel, directness, driver satisfaction, etc) is in order.

    Personally, I do not like the boxy Mercedes look--sort of a sedan on steroids, but each to his own...
