CloseI'd go out and buy one one tomorrow if the new "911" were to be announced. Though, without significant advances in development and no new models, I don't see any reason to change the current car I have (which is not exactly a bad thing, really).
If the 997 follows the same course as the 996, then the 997.2 will be the current car until 2013?? Eh, that seems too long a wait for me. Any hope for an earlier release of a major redesign?

It's hard to know what to believe with dealers, my past experience with asking dealers about new model launches is that they usually try to pick the farthest possible date into the future they think you will believe so that they have the best chance to keep selling the cars they have.
There was an article not too long ago from 911editor Steve Bennett saying Porsche has officially pushed the 991 ahead a year, indicating MY10 was the final year for the 997 and we'd have the 991 in about a year as a 2011. Not sure how accurate this is, maybe RC can clarify. With the new Cayenne coming in the spring of 2010 and the way Porsche usually likes at least 1/2 a year between launches maybe we'll see the 991 fall/winter of 2010? Wish I knew too, but just guessing.
I read here at RENNTAM a post by RC that the 991 would be introduced in September of 2011 at the IAA in Frankfurt. Most likely it will be available stateside in early spring as a 2012 MY model.

Wow Dave63, I think you've described the perfect evolution of the 911. I like the part about moving the engine slightly forward to a rear-mid position, and cutting back the front overhang. That would end the "What's better -987 or 997" debate for me, and the slightly awkward hierarchy in which Porsche currently staggers its mid- and rear- engined models. ...Though, 20" wheels? The arches would have to be bigger to avoid the rubber-band look of even lower-profile tires and -more importantly -unruly handling.
I guess 2011 wouldn't be too far away. However, I'm feeling that Porsche needs a new product or two to create a bigger buzz about its products. The Panamera doesn't do it for me, and all the "special" editions I easily can be put together with the configurator. Maybe another halo car?? How about a follow-up to the rally version 959?
In the meantime, the cost of a lightly used Aston Vantage is steadily coming down... If only I had space for another car!

For a contrarian opinion: Dave63 just defined the wrong evolution of a 911. That is moving away from the core 911 architecture. I do not want that car.

In my mind, the "true" 911 died with the 993. If I were purist, then I'd want nothing more than a 993 Turbo (and nothing less than a normally aspirated 911). But I'm over it. Porsche is known for its engineering as much as its history. Time to move the game on...
You do not understand what the core of a 911 is. A 911 is not air-cooled or water-cooled, NA or turbo. A 911 is a short wheelbase, all-in-the-rear design, with the engine behind the transmission hanging from the back of the car. If you increase the wheelbase and move the CG forward you are not building a 911. The 996 and the 997 are still 911s. When a 991 has a wheelbase longer than a Cayman... I think not.
I see you drive a Boxster... so your Porsche core is different. :) The Boxster/Cayman are fantastic Porsches, they are perhaps more advanced as mid-engine designs, than a 911. But for me the quirky nature of the 11 is what makes it unique.

I hear ya. There is a compelling argument that what's faster, stronger, more reliable, more efficient & better looking is not always what's best. So if the quirky nature of truly rear-engined Porsche is what you crave, then it must be love, no?
