    Tequipment music player interface

Have any of you guys fitted (as a dealer retrofit Tequipment item) a 'music player interface'?

It allows an iPod to be connected to the PCM 2.1 in 997.1 cars. It fits inside the rear centre console storage compartment and provides a dock connector for an iPod or MP3 player including a battery charging function and also a 3.5mm jack connector.

The Tequipment 911 catalogue states that it is only for 997 vehicles up to 07/2008.

    The part no is 997 044 901 70.

I am considering fitting this to my car to enable me to connect my iPhone 3G.

Any info or views would be appreciated Smiley

    Cheers Smiley

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

    Easy,

If I recall correctly, this option only functions as a line-in connection, so you can play the songs via the audio equipment of your car.
I thought it didn't give you the possibility to select songs and playlists through the PCM. So keep that in mind.

However, I am not sure of the above, so additional input is still handy ;-)

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

That's right Joost - operation is via the iPod/iPhone itself - not via the PCM. It does seem a bit strange to have to open the rear centre console storage compartment lid every time one wants to change a playlist/track etc i.e. it isn't the most convenient solution.

Also, since it is a line-in connection, I assume it is not a true digital connection compatible with the MOST bus. But, I'm no expert on this aspect of it.

For these two reasons, I am probably unlikely to proceed with it. Plus, I'm pretty happy burning mp3 CDs Smiley

I had the Dension GW 500. It worked great, everything manageable from the PCM and with digital connection. I strongly recommend it.

Easy, does it include a USB port like in the 997.2?Smiley

I can't remember now, but if so you could use the USB port instead with a simple 16GB Memory Stick loaded with your Iphones music, and when you use the USB port the folders and songs are selectable from the PCM just like if they were from the MP3 PCM slot.

Unfortunately not Carlos - no USB input

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

Pity, then I really don't think its worth it either I rather stick to the CD-RW's with mp3's or go for a Dension 500.

This could be potentially dangerous!  Don't do it!!

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

There is a product from kensington, integrating a charge Adapter an Aix Cable and à wireless Remote to Clip on the steering Wheel.

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

In my experience the music player interface is fairly poor on the gen1's, it's little more than an FM transmitter like an iTrip. You need to keep retuning the stereo to a clear frequency, which is next to useless in towns like London. It will charge the iPod, but it doesn't have an aux or line-in connection to PCM2.1, only via the FM transmitter.

It's the only official solution from Porsche though, otherwise just buy an iTrip or equivalent, but they just don't work in built-up areas.

I don't have this in my car, but I did get to try a dealer loan car with it fitted some time ago, and found it impossible to use - you can leave the ipod on shuffle, but you have to keep retuning the radio, and you have to endure all the interference and crackling as you drive through town. No thanks.

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

@Robert_Prince: hi and welcome to Rennteam

Actually, the Porsche Tequipment music player interface (that I was referring to) doesn't work by means of a FM transmitter. It has a line-in connection so the cable from the iPod/iPhone actually plugs into a socket inside the rear centre console storage compartment.

I can only assume that you were referring to another one of these iPod interfaces that does use a FM transmitter.

I agree that the FM transmitter type interfaces are terrible. They depend upon your car radio receiving a weak radio signal so the sound quality is IMO very poor.

BTW the FM transmitter devices are actually problematic in the UK. Since they broadcast a FM signal, users breach the Broadcast Act 1990 since they obviously do not possess a FM broadcasting licence. So using them is technically illegal in the UK. Whether the police ever enforce that law though is another matter.

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

Hi Easy, and thanks for the welcome

Apologies for any confusion then. The one I'm referring to is part # 997.044.901.70, which does also have the connection either in the armrest or at the base of the center console, but in my version the cable connection only charges the ipod not it doesn't connect to the PCM frustratingly - that's reliant on the FM modulator !

Please let me know if there's now a better version for the gen1's as I'd like to get one !

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

How strange - we are referring to the same part no!

    997 044 901 70

When you look at the photo of this Tequipment item on page 36 of the 997.1 Tequipment Catalogue, it very clearly shows a photo of the cable connecting to a line-in socket inside the rear centre console storage compartment: As far as I can tell, there's no sign of a FM transmitter.

One possibility is that you might have an older type of iPod interface and that the newer one still uses the same part no?  Maybe the parts department of your OPC can shed some further light on this

If I'm mistaken and this does work by means of a FM transmitter, then there is no way I will get this item Smiley

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

Certainly sounds the same Easy, in my experience this one does connect by cable, but that's only for the charging. It's really an FM modulator, and as many people have had them taken out as have had them installed ! It's £281 fitted at my midlands OPC, even they don't recommend it.

This is one of those examples where Porsche leave the older models behind - you can as we know have proper ipod interface (UAI) on the gen 2's (with PCM3) but it's not backwards compatible.

Please do check with your guys though, I'd be pleased to be proved wrong on this and would be next in the queue to get one fitted !

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

As far as I knew, the one for the 997.1 worked through direct cable not FM, I asked about this back in the day when it came out, and thats what I was told, but don't quote me on this as I didn't see it with my own eyes so you could be right

The problem still lies in that you have to use the mp3 device to change songs with does not make any sense at all and it not only a pain but dangerous too. In the case of connecting an iPod if offered charging too but if its another Mp3 player there is not even charging function. So even if its cable, its not worth it at all IMO.

    Re: Tequipment music player interface

Unless they have upgraded the technology, I'm afraid the reftrofit Porsche Tequipment Music Player Interface - despite the 3.5mm AUX socket - only provides a connection to the CD/radio via FM modulation...
