I've done it - seemed to make the top end a bit more lively, and gives a bit more intake noise it that's your thing. Having removed it it seems hard to believe the baffle doesn't have a negative effect.
I removed the whole thing, then unclipped the baffle from the frame holding it in, then made a mesh cover to fit to the frame to stop anything getting into the intake. Nothing irreversible. No negative effects experienced. I'd say go for it.

Ah yes - regarding fuel consumption - I saw a little improvement. The guy who reported a deterioration removed the whole thing including the velocity-stack-shaped-tube thing, which was a bit daft IMO. Clearly that part was designed to alter airflow/velocity.

Eh, I can't see changing the intake being any different than adding a "cold air" or "short" intake to any other car. You'll probably experience a increase in induction noise, which is entertaining and potentially intimidating (to others on the road) on acceleration. Whether or not the altered intake improves hp depends on the change in flow dynamic and resonance characteristic.
