reginos:
These illuminations on both steering wheels, are totally pointless and especially on the paddle wheel above, they spoil a good design.
I fully agree with you. According to Porsche Marketing about 90% of potential 997.2 Turbo PDK buyers actually wanted them. So, we are in minority...

They are totally pointless , I fully agree.
I always wonder who the marketing guys asks to get such results They never asked me that is for sure
997.2 C2S, PDK, -20mm
while i found them silly, the shift lights on the ferrari wheel make more sense than what porsche is throwing at us again.
somehow they want to do the 'same' but not copy and end up with rubbish. hence first the pdk buttons and now the useless lights.
one of the really useful 'lights' feature on any car are the yellow and red lights on the BMW M cars tachometer.
they go out according to engine oil temperature and recommended rev range.

Must be same people who asked for the illuminated door sills
@ intouch; I thought your GT2 also would have the upshift light just like my GT3, no ?

BTW....the paddles move with the steering. They are NOT fixed on the steering column.
see in the picture that the steering is slightly inclined to the right and so are the paddles.
So this there is no much difference from the PDK buttons.
Obviously, this steering was made to satisfy the intuition of those who cannot un-learn the left/right downshift/upshft. Still, i think it is a sporty steering and may prove to be more involving than the paddles, but you should always have both hands on the steering.
again the question becomes more difficult.. which steering is better?.

Yes, paddles are attached to the steering wheel. Same concept is on new McLaren MP4-12C.
This difference is IMHO BIG in comparison with standard buttons steering wheel.
New paddles steering wheel is totally better option and I will have it on my 997.2 Turbo PDK.
Are you sure that paddles attached to steering column a la Ferrari is indeed better way? What about changing gear in extreme total lock situation(which is rare)?
This optional paddled-steering wheel is straight from a Mustang parts bin. Just awful!
PAG succumbed to the fashion-driven paddle pressure. Its steering mounted PDK buttons are much better and ergonomic, at least for those who drive fast twisty roads. Those who drive straight-line autobahns may use the for-show paddles, as they will never be tangled up in full lock turns..

ADias, its interesting that you mentioned that with the paddles you will be tangled up in full lock turns, while in the PDK buttons you won't?
I see that its the same problem with both. The paddle shift steering has the same problem as the PDK buttons. that gear shifting is not fixed on the column. I do not see any advantage in the new paddle steering whatsoever. On the contrary, with PDK buttons you can upshift and downshift in one hand...

On every kind of situation with buttons, you will always know that if you pull the buttons(left or right), you´ll downshift without the need to look to the steerig wheel, and with paddles that´s not the case, you´ll have to be very carefull cause you´l have to look to the steering to see where´s the downshift paddle is, and only then pull.

Exactly right. The Porsche buttons go against the grain (fashion) but they actually do the job better. That is, for real drivers who actually take the cars out for spirited driving on twisty roads. ;)
