New 3.8 Porsche turbo looks a bit lame

Take a look at the Sport Auto test below:

A Porsche turbo with 500PS should be going 0-300kph faster than 42s IMO.... The old 480PS Metzger turbo managed 40s flat !

With 0-300kph a lot depends on the surface of the track and this was a fast track, the Cargraphic 624hp car at 0-300 in 23.8s was nearly 5s faster than it had managed on a different track..... The Metzger engine is dead and along with it real Porsche hp :grr:

I'm sure the Turbo was a brand new car, the engine hardly ran in. All these specials must have been with well broken-in engines, as brand new examples of those are not so easily found anyway.

Give the Turbo another 10-15k kms and retry!

If you tune it to the same extent as your GT2, I wouldn't bet on it Smiley

Hmm... Let me correct you little bit-old 997 Turbo manual was measured 40.7s for 0-300km/h in Papenburg by AMS. Just... This was VERY HEALTY press car with more then 500ps-trust me on this. Why? They measured also in gear acceleration on this car and it was way faster then both examples of 997 Turbo manuals that were measured by Sport Auto. Also that 40.7s Slate Grey 997 Turbo is still in Porsche Germany inventory...

A nice story but if you check out all the magazine tests for the 997tt in the link below you will see that the car you refer to was not really any quicker than any of the others (remember there will always be diferences depending on the surface and other conditions) they all run 0-200kph between 12.1s and 12.8s

The only other test there up t0 250kph managed 20.9s which is only 0.2s behind the "ringer" car.......

A real 500hp porsche turbo should be easily breaking into the 30s for 0-300kph - For me the data shows that the hp is dissappearing as the engine gets loaded and hot, the test was presumably done in September so possibly high 20s DegC heat - another reason why the Cargraphic car was so fast - it has the expensive Secan intercoolersSmiley

This might be an explanation. The 997 looses two whole seconds on the Wiesmann GT from 200 to 300 kph, at equal power and, I suppose, similiar drag.

All other test cars posted acceleration times that are at least coherent with other test results, if not better. So, it is only the Turbo´s acceleration that appears oddly and apart from the intercoolers I could only suspect gearing to be the main reason for the significant difference below and beyond 200 kph.

Re: New 3.8 Porsche turbo looks a bit lame

Did you all forget 997 GT2 0-300km/h test times? NOT 33s claimed by Porsche.

Smiley no I did not forget, or the 34s for the Carrera GT instead of 27s from Porsche Smiley

    I believe Autobild tested a GT2 at 34s so a bit nearer....

The point about the 0-300 test (as was explained by Porsche CGT development  engineers and as I have learnt from first hand experience) is that the conditions of the test are of a massive importance and can make many seconds difference particularly the surface and ambient temperature.

This is why it is particularly important that the Cargraphic car was there on the same test (for the 997tt.2) since that car was tested before 0-300 in around 28s so we can surely deduce that the test conditions for this day were certainly good although maybe (as we say above) the heat will be having some effect on the turbo cars.

I agree that the standard 480PS 997tt is nearer 500PS in standard form - Rototest carried out certified hub power tests on a 997tt showed 464PS at the hubs so at the very least it shows that the 997tt Metzger is producing all its 480PS and probably a few more......
