    Re: F142 revealed - Ferrari 458 Italia

I still haven't warmed up to:

    - The front end design

    - The air vents on either side of the headlights (What are those for anyway - it's a rear engine car?!)

    - The large and rather upright greenhouse.

    - The scalloping along aside the the car.

    - Still think the rear end looks like a Storm Trooper helmet and the triple tailpipes are more comical than connotating seriousness and performance.

Although the engine is in the rear, the cooling radiators are in the nose, just as in newer Porsches.

Yeah, on the 430 the radiator venting is on the SIDE of the front bumper, the 458's looks like it's on top on the front fender instead.

Maybe they are not air vents at all. Smiley

Call me a cynic, but maybe they are just a way of disguising inconsistent panel gaps at that difficult area where trunk lid, light unit, bumper apron and front fender all meet. Smiley

PS: Oooops! On reviewing the photographs I notice that they have transferred the transition from the front bumper apron to the fender to the rear edge of light unit.
OTOH, that could also be interpreted as further confirmation that they arrived at an intelligent choice of "meeting points" for various components in order to reduce panel-gap quality problems. Smiley

I think Grants probably right but you just pointed out something I hadn't even noticed prior.  But they did a pretty slick job of not making that obvious before:

Fritz, you may not be too far off. Something about the car doesn't strike me as being authentic(for lack of a better word). It is almost as though it is a kit car. A little Enzo and Corvette in the back, the side a little Honda and the front a mishmash of 355, 599 and whatever else.

Gregg, your comment about the front was hilarious. BTW, I don't believe you can order a Scud. However, there a many with no or low mileage for sale probably for less than MSRP.

    Re: F142 revealed - Ferrari 458 Italia

I like the dark side skirts... Itr makes the car look slimmer in profile. Gives it a more modern look than F430 IMO.

The front looks a bit strange from full front angle view. And we defintely won't be seeing that additional horsey amblem once you screw number plate in its place.

    Re: F142 revealed - Ferrari 458 Italia

Some design details as mentioned above are peculiar and gratuitous if you subscribe to the school of less being more. I suppose that a little quirkiness is no longer considered charming or individualistic, particularly for more than a quarter of a million dollars.  Then again, perhaps the problem is that it's all be said and done and all that's left is derivative or oddball design posing as innovation and creativity?

    Re: F142 revealed - Ferrari 458 Italia

ATZ i usually agree with all your design cues but honestly i think the 458 is perfect as it is. it might not be the best looking ferrari ever but it certainly takes the cake away from the 360 and 430. and besides we all know that ferrari has never been a genius with release pictures, i must state the obvious again and say that if most of us think the car is mildly good looking in pictures then it will probably be better than we expect in the metal. i might sound like a broken record here but i just think we should be a bit more optimistic.

Thanks, ya i think the 458 is a really exciting effort, and it is always easy to mod the design afterwards. I compliment Ferrari for approving such a revolutionary design. It shows Fcars new design direction, and i can see lots of beautiful offspins Smiley

I am not worried at all. Ferraris always look MUCH better in real life than they do in pictures; up close and personal they are always stunning! Bizarrely, it works the other way around with Maseratis...

    Re: F142 revealed - Ferrari 458 Italia

Very interesting media release, explaining the totally new interior layout:

In the run-up to the official unveiling of the Ferrari 458 Italia at the Frankfurt Motor Show on the 15th of September, enthusiasts can find out more about the car on www.ferrari.com. There they will find the first photographs of the 458 Italia’s interior and of the steering wheel and instrument binnacle which represent a significant step forward in the concept of the ergonomic interface between driver and car.

In fact the main commands are now grouped on the steering wheel, the secondary commands are handily set in two satellite pods either side of the dash and there are now comprehensive instrument displays on the panel ahead of the driver. These solutions represent an important safety aspect, enabling the driver to concentrate fully on driving. Similarly this layout ensures maximum control of the car in highperformance driving, an uncompromising approach that derives directly from Ferrari’s F1 experience.

Working closely with the Ferrari Styling Centre, the engineers have thus reinterpreted the positioning of the major commands to provide a truly driver-oriented cockpit. All steering-column mounted stalks have been eliminated, with the indicators, full beam, flash and windscreen wiper functions now being activated by buttons on the steering wheel boss. The button to select the shock absorber setting is now positioned next to the ‘Engine start’ button where it falls readily to hand. Behind the wheel are a number of secondary functions, such as the stereo, while the gearbox paddles are now longer making shifts even easier from any steering angle.

The right-hand satellite pod on the dash incorporates controls for the infotainment, the Bluetooth connection, sat-nav, digital speedo and rear parking camera. Clustered on the left-hand satellite pod instead are the optional cruise control, buttons for choosing the video setting of the left-hand dash TFT screen and the on-board computer interface. The latter controls the trip computer, the Vehicle Dynamic Assistance and the display of the car’s set-up.

The Vehicle Dynamic Assistance monitors the operating parameters of the most important areas of the car - engine/gearbox, tyres and brakes. The VDA is enabled in the following manettino settings – Race, CT off and CST off – and provides visual confirmation of the status of each component based on an algorithm from parameters reading lateral and longitudinal acceleration, revs and speed. This enables the driver to assess the ideal operating conditions for the car. There are three status settings: WARM-UP (operating temperature too low), GO (ideal operating conditions) and OVER (one or more components are no longer at their optimum level and need cooling).

Totally agree. In person I know for sure the 458 is going to look so much better than here. You don't capture the shapes & lines in Ferrari's in pictures. Even in the Stradale the whole coke bottle shape with the middle part of the car coming in & the rounded from top to bottom shape of the doors you don't ever see in pics. Disappointed somewhat I was expecting a car that looked like an obvious TO THE NEXT LEVEL car, something that was as different as the Enzo is to other Ferrari's & how the CGT was to Porsche, that kind of different. If you didn't have any Ferrari knowledge this car could have even come before the 430 even before the 360, it just doesn't look so cutting edge.  But really looking forward to seeing, hearing, driving,,,,even feeling & smelling the car! Nothing smells as good as the inside of a new F-car. Nothing.,,,,,,,well except your new F-car on delivery day!!!!!!!

    Thanks Stefan, interesting.

The interior is going to drip w/ typical Ferrari quality & craftsmanship. Everything will feel buttery smooth & very high end.,,,Impossible to capture in pictures or even get a true sense of without driving the car.

It's going to be a really fun car to drive I bet.

I can see where you are coming from but personally I regard the 458 as much more futuristic than a 430 ( the 360 looks dated IMO). Seen together (in pictures at least), the 458 looks cutting edge compared to the (still stunning) 430.

There's a whole thread about that at FChat. Smiley
