    Best looking modern Ferrari

    Found these last night taken by a poster named "refugees" linked at another site. He took some tremendous shots, great job.

    I have long said the 512 TR is the best looking fcar since 1970 and these pics are the nicest I have seen, taken last week-end.

    these shots show a great comparison to the newer 8 and 12 models.

    Notice how the 512 is lower and wider than both newer fcars. It just gives it a meaner more exotic look.

    I think Ferrari has somewhat shifted to appeal to a wider audience in the last 20 or so years such that the later cars 360/430/458 are more daily drivers vs. raw exotics that arehard to navigate through city traffic. Modern Ferraris are much easier to drive in traffic, to drive fast, to commute in and throught technology still delivery on the racetrack such that all drivers can enjoy their F on their own level (SAFELY).

    I feel like older cars from the 80s from Ferrari rely on a more extreme and experienced driver such that they are more of a handful. This also means less easy to drive in the city due to low and wide car having big blind spots. I personally love the new Ferrari's but I see them for what they are and who they appeal to in our current time such that Ferrari can survive. I therefore find it very hard to compare the looks of olders F cars to modern ones because the design and purpose objectives have changed over the years. Trust my i love the 512TR and my all time favorite Ferrari has got to be the F40, but in incorporating the changed objectives of todays buyer, I think Ferrari is doing amazing. Considering these changes objectives I believe that, for instance, the brand new 458 Italia is more succesful to todays buyer than the 512TR would have been.

    Maybe Ferrari has grown more main strain such that older F cars look more like exotics, but i love the older look. I do have to say, when comparing these above cars the 512TR looks more like a Lotus than a Ferrari

    You make a good point about ease of driving the newer models, I did not think of that, very good thinking.

     

    But when talking ferrari, commuting should be the last concern imo, but perhaps not from a corporate view.

    No mistaking a TR for anything but a Ferrari in person. It is a unique sight and sound. The lowness and width are amazing, not to mention the butt.

     

    It's one of the reasons why new ferrari's don't appeal to me that much, they lost the lowness, it really makes a difference.

    Completely agree with you. Seeing a TR is more special than seeing an Enzo. I have spotted both in West Vancouver!

    Interesting fact about the 512 TR's side grates.

    They were never in the original or approved design.  What happened was deep in the development cycle they found out that a few countries had a law on the books about the maximum size any  inlet, intake, or oriface could be on a road going vehicle needed to be protected by some sort of grillwork. .

    So a quick design change was added - and thus you ended up with the legendary side strakes.

     I can honestly say that my passion for cars started when my dad gave me a 1:18 die-cast model of a 512. I've been a car fanatic ever since, specially ferraris and specially the 512, if I'm ever given the opportunity to buy one i'll take it in a heartbeat.

    I still remember being so disappointed when I saw the successor to the 512M.

    I never liked the weird looking slats on the sides of the TR or 348. Looks some kind of weird aftermarket body kit from Japan. IMHO, the 355 is the best looking modern Ferrari. Clean. Sharp. Classy. No gimmicks.

    The 512 is very nice but it is also very 80s. Back in its days it was stunning though. My vote for the best looking Ferrari has to go to the Enzo. It's not pretty as such and all for the better as it is a hypercar and it has to be aggressive and ferosious looking like a fighter plane.

    I have an ageing F355 but it still stirs my interest every time I walk into the garage. Weird driving position but great to drive though I could do without those oh-my-god-the-steering's-gone-light moments at high speed. I crahsed mine after it aquaplaned in the wet, $40,000 to fix, wasn't prepared for how fast it let go, so they are definitely cars to respect and of course it knocks your resale for six.

    Strange too that I was able to justify myself £90k in 1995 but couldn't do so now for the £150k the 458 is likely to cost. Something to do with mid-career and end-career, I guess - I'm 54 - and stuff like the need for a pension makes your head rule your heart. Do agree though, the 458 is fabulous.
