Yeah, I'm sure they went to the drivers and asked them what car this is. *LOL*

It can be ANYTHING, Porsche is testing different versions all the time, it could be anything, a hybrid prototype, whatever.

I once saw a thinktank sketch of the 911 successor and it looked damned good, Think of a more flowing 911 shape and you may get an idea.
Don't expect anything extreme, the 911 is still the spearhead in Porsche's model line, especially since Cayenne sales dropped substantially and the success of the Panamera is still unclear.

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

RC, maybe the Cayenne sales are dropping here, but I am sure Russia and China will take care of the leftovers. Why do you think the Cayenne is losing it? And to which car, if any?

It's not that any other vehicle is winning conquest sales from Cayenne, it's losing out because of high gas prices and the credit squeeze in U.S.

    Re: Cayenne

I bet the new 991's headlights are not rounded, maybe something like the Panamera's headlights.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Cayenne

No, I think they will be round. They strayed from that once with the 996, and came back to round again with the 997. The headlights of the boxster/cayman and the panamera and cayenne are al derivates of the 996 shape.

By going back from 996 to 997 to the round shape, porsche sort of gave in to customer demand. I don't think they will make the same mistake again.

    Re: Cayenne

The 991 headlights are going to stay "classic" as far as I heard, whatever this means. My guess is: not much change compared to the 997. It would be a HUGE mistake if Porsche would go back to the 996 headlight design, this was one of the most criticized design flaws of the 996 series. The Porsche designers apparently tried to implement a more sophisticated "interior" design to the headlights, so the form is still roundly shaped but the "interior" is actually part of the whole design and looks.

As to the launch in 2011: it depends on when and IF the 997 Turbo facelift shows up. Currently Porsche seems to be very secretive about the 997 Turbo facelift and I don't quite understand why. Time will tell I guess.

    Re: Cayenne

The challenge for the 997TT facelift is whether it can thrash the Nissan GT-R  comprehensively enough for there to be no argument.

I hope that Porsche sees the sense in keeping one of its "signature" design elements in the round headlights. The last thing we need is for the 911 to go all derivative again with fried eggs or slanty headlights. The round headlights can still be more "jewel" like without losing the design heritage.

I'm intrigued about whether Porsche will take some of the interior design from Panamera and graft that into 991. Lots to ponder.

Probably mid to late 2012 as a MY2013 for the turbo. I would doubt any sooner, however, maybe a year later.

But why should they cover the interior, if it's from a 997? Smiley

Couldn't it be that they're just very similar? Smiley

I think it's typical for Porsche: they cover the interior and the exterior even though they will be impossible to distinguish for anyone but Porschephiles

Wonder if there's a duck tail spoiler under the black pastic rear? (the Carrera Sport Classic certainly got a lot of praise here in the UK, for its retro looks)
