    997.2 Turbo revealed - 500 hp

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/242347/#

For the first time, the 911 gets proper paddle shifters to change gears in PDK models. The paddles are mounted to the back of the steering wheel — right shifts up, left shifts down — and are a no-cost alternative to the flawed double-function shift buttons currently used.

First impression is dissapointment in the low power figure and loss of GT1. Paddles are good, Spyder wheels are good, hopefully improved PTM system aswell.

    Re: 997.2 Turbo revealed - 493 hp

At least one item in the Autocar article is off-493HP is only a 10HP gain over the 997.1 TT (from 483).

And are they really moving up to 3.8L?Smiley

There's a PVT too, I wonder if this will help in traction/handling department

493bhp (british unit) equals 500HP/PS, so this is the power as the ROW understand. From 480HP previously.

    Re: 997.2 Turbo revealed - 493 hp

Personally, I am very happy that the new DFI engine is used. Not only it has ecological advantages (emissions and consumption) but it also shows that Porsche is a forward looking modern manufacturer.

How can you demonstrate that you are at the forefront of technology if you (have to) use an engine that was designed in the 80s? Even if that GT1 block is strong it's no alibi for not being able to build an equally robust new modern engine.

Think how many engines other top manufacturers like M-B , BMW and Audi (even low volume Ferrari) have changed over the last 10-15 years.

    Re: 997.2 Turbo revealed - 493 hp

well, fortunately isn't change too much from the "old" one

i like the standard new rims, and the new rear.

Sincerely i wait for a more aggressive power figure..but this is.

Personally i will save money and wait the 991TT,i don't need now PDK..so..

    Re: 997.2 Turbo revealed - 493 hp

The beauty of the GT1 was there was no need for change. It is still one of, if not the most economical supercar engines. It is bulletproof and race tested. The new engine has much to live up to!

This facelift is very minimal but typical Porsche. No surprises really. Do like the new rims Smiley

Press Release: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo...

Press Release: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

Intelligent Power: Consumption Down Significantly, Performance Up Once Again

New Porsche 911 Turbo making its Debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo.jpg

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly presenting a new top model at the pinnacle of its broad range of production sports cars: The new Porsche 911 Turbo combines far reaching innovations in technology with fine tuning and supreme refinement in design. All key features of this high-performance sports car have been significantly improved, the new 911 Turbo combining a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency and lower weight with more power, even higher speed, and enhanced driving dynamics.

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo_02.jpg

Particularly in terms of fuel economy and dynamic performance, the new top-of-the-range 911 from Zuffenhausen now stands out even more than before from its competitors in the market. Porsche's new top model will be presented to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17 - 27 September.

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo_01.jpg

The heart and highlight of the seventh generation of the Turbo is the new power unit displacing 3.8 litres and delivering maximum output of 500 bhp (368 kW). The first entirely new engine in the 35-year-history of the Turbo comes with features such as Direct Fuel Injection and Porsche's exclusive turbocharger with variable turbine geometry on a gasoline power unit. And as an option, the new six-cylinder may be combined for the first time with Porsche's seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (Double-Clutch Gearbox).

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo_04.jpg

Models equipped with PDK are also available with a new, optional three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles as an alternative to the standard steering wheel with its proven shift buttons. Fitted firmly on the steering wheel, the right paddle is for shifting up, the left paddle for shifting down. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo both the gearshift paddle and the PDK steering wheel with its shift buttons come with integrated displays for Launch Control and the Sport/Sport Plus mode, which are however designed differently on the two steering wheels.

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo_03.jpg

The combination of PDK, Direct Fuel Injection and turbocharging ensures an unprecedented standard of efficiency, agility, responsiveness and performance, the Porsche 911 Turbo reducing CO2 emissions versus its predecessor by almost 18 per cent and therefore ranking unique in its segment also in this respect. Depending on the configuration of the car, the new top model requires just 11.4 - 11.7 ltr/100 km (equal to 24.8 - 24.1 mpg imp) under the EU5 standard. And unlike most other cars in its segment, the new Turbo remains even further below the crucial level of fuel consumption for gas guzzler tax in the USA, the special tax imposed on cars with substantial fuel consumption. All this despite acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is 312 km/h or 194 mph.

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo-Cabriolet_05.jpg

The Turbo driver of the future will also enjoy a further improvement in driving dynamics, detailed enhancement of PTM fully controlled all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stability Management being further supported by new PTV Porsche Torque Vectoring available as an option. This makes the car even more agile and precise in its steering for an even higher level of driving pleasure.

    2010-Porsche-911-Turbo-Cabriolet_06.jpg

Sales of the new Porsche 911 Turbo in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise are starting in Germany on 21 November 2009. The Euro base price without value-added tax and national specifications is Euro 122,400 for the Coupé and Euro 131,800 for the Cabriolet. The gross retail price in Germany, therefore, is Euro 145,871 for the Coupé and Euro 157,057 for the Cabriolet, in each case including 19% value-added tax and national specifications.

Not much change to the "face" but quite a lot of new technology for a mid-term facelift. Let's hope it drives as well as the data promisses

...as expected, from a "viewing" perspective.... though I like it, even the new rims look better than on the first pics. Anyway I would choose the RS Spyder wheels.

    Below the line...fully satisfied!

May be only 20hp plus....but I assume the new 4WD and the PTV will bring the track performance significantly fowward. NBR times should be something like 10-12sec better that 997.1 turbo.

I guess the soon to be launched microsite on porsche.com will give us more insight on the features!

Re: Press Release: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo...

Ther paddles are still  only a have measure.  They should come mounted on the steering columns, not on the steering wheel. But I suppose that needed too many modifications on the whole dashboard configutation.

The sports button on the steering wheel is great and would be very practical and better then where it is now.

I like the new rims better.

Re: Press Release: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo...

Phew, glad to see it's not the big leap forwards some were predicting.

I am sure that for a plain comparison of stock 997.1 Turbo vs stock 997.2 Turbo that the facelift car will be faster and more agile on the limit making for a better NBR time, but a tuned Stage II+ (540bhp+) 997.1 Turbo with upgraded suspension will still be a far better car IMHO, not to mention wayyyy cheaper (for trade-in and for buying 2nd hand and mod'ing).  Plus you have the now 'classic' GT1 engine!

Looking forward to seeing the 100-200kph times.  Currently:

    Car 100-200
    997 Turbo Cargraphic 544 RSC 3.6 7.1
    997 Turbo Ruf 550 (cup tyres) 7.2
    997 GT2 7.3
    997.2 GT3 8.2
    997 Turbo (tip) 8.4
    997 Turbo (manual) 8.6

I would expect the 997.2 Turbo to be somewhere between 8.0 to 7.8 seconds.  Porsche wouldn't make a 997.2 Turbo faster than a GT2 though; marketing for you.  Not that a car with a lot more weight and 30PS less could go faster than a GT2 anyway.

So Coupe is 15kg lighter and Cab 10kg lighter.  Plus torque is now 650Nm to 700Nm with overboost.

    I like the paddle shifts!

But new daytime running lights is just the same as now when you select fog lights!

Finally I can start looking at Porsche sportscars again!  I really wanted a PDK 997.2, but the rocker switches completely put me off.  Unfortunately now I am not in a position to buy a 911 Turbo as I need to get a new family car first.  Maybe in 18 months, or wait for the 991TT.  But well done Porsche, good to see you do listen to the market.
