    Wow: Top Gear (JC) drives the Aston Martin V12 Vantage

    This is one of the best car reviews I have ever seen, and completely different from the normal action packed pieces with quick camera changes, and Top Gear shows yet again that they are producing some of the best TV on earthSmiley

    For once, Clarkson hardly says anything at all, but what he says is really meaningful, and tied together with the music.

    "I just have this horrible, dreadful feeling that what I'm driving here is an ending"

    (The music is An Ending by Brian Eno, one of my all time fave pieces of music. TG apparently also likes it, it was also used in the Zonda/Ford GT/F430 to the Millau bridge road trip)

    Stunning car. I've said it before and I'll say it again, right now Aston makes the most desirable cars!

     

    As to the video, pretty but not enough about the car and way too much drama. Short sighted legislation may hurt these cars, but real world factors won't.

    Electrics are here right now for real. In 5 years they will be taking a growing percentage of new car sales, so the demand for oil will recede. So will pollution.

    More oil available, emissions dropping radically, no need for pointless legislation.

    No problem for the tiny exotics market.

    Sorry, but I thought it was rubbish that review   I wanted facts of how it handled, how it accelerated and how it sounded.  Not a nostalgia piece about cars in general.

     

    ...great roads though!

    IMHO JC didn't do an issue by issue review of the V12 Vantage because it was just unnecessary in his opinion. The whole point IMHO was that words were simply unnecessary - the car, its sound, the visible pleasure of driving it on those magnificent roads would speak for themselves...

    He obviously loved everything about the car but it just pained him to think that such 'motoring perfection' was being launched in circumstances so openly hostile to it (economic downturn, environmental activism, diminishing world oil supplies, road safety that kills driving pleasure - all these factors are so dominant in the media) that, despite being so utterly brilliant, this car was destined to be overwhelmed by those forces in the long run.

    This kind of review isn't to everyone's taste - and not everyone will 'get' what JC was feeling. But, he has a passion for cars so filming that car in such a beautiful way was his way of paying tribute to it - a suitable epitaph to high performance cars that will one day die out.

    I remember the piece he did on the 997 Carrera S when it first came out.  "Pure Porscheography".  That made me want one SO badly!

    All his review of the AM V12 Vantage did was make me want to get in my Turbo and head to Wales to find those roads!

    I'm sure you can appreciate that there's a difference between a magazine article (that depends heavily on both words and pictures) and the final 10 min slot of a TV show - which also happens to be the last show in the current series (and which needs to end the series in the desired way and make people feel like coming back for more when the next series begins) Smiley

    Top Gear is an entertainment show about cars/motoring etc (where the personalities involved are as important as the cars). They even won an Emmy award some time back for 'best non-scripted entertainment show' (or AFAIK something like that...) It's not supposed to be taken seriously - especially considering JC's well-known anti-Porsche bias - it's about 3 guys larking about having fun and sometimes making absolute fools of themselves...  Expecting them to do detailed analytical reviews (like a very respected car magazine might do) is IMHO kind of missing the point and expecting something that JC and his crew have no intention of giving )

    With respect I think you are missing the raison d'etre of the piece - IMO it wasn't meant to be a review of the car specifically, it was mainly a "sign off" for the current series and  a wake for the future of high performance cars in general. As such, I thought it was very good.

     To me that was pretty much the best, most memorable, most sentiment provoking car video i have ever seen.. I dont think much of JC but.. this was stunning imo.

    He scored many points with the few words he said (emphasis on the word FEW).

     I was laughing the whole way through the episode, but when it got to that part, i was actually frustrated. I couldn't believe that a show based on powerslides, one-liners, and quirkiness would do something like this, it's totally out of line with the idea of the show.

    If I wanted a really boring review of a truly awesome car, I would have looked elsewhere.

     

    on that note, clarksons idea for the Scirocco tdi of just a picture of it, then a polar bear exploding put tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard!
