    2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

I wonder what the weather will be like at the next grand prix. Smiley I don't believe that the warmer temperatures in Hungary will allow enough extra heat into Brawn's tyres to outweigh the performance advantage that Red Bull now has over Brawn Smiley

At least Spanky has publicly announced that he will not stand for re-election as FIA President. Instead, we will have Jean Todt or Ari Vatanen. IMO anbody would be an improvement over Spanky Max Smiley

Actually, what Spanky did in his private life IMO is his own business - but I just enjoy having a laugh at his expense Smiley But I certainly agree with FOTA that the arbitrary way in which he keeps changing the rules without consulting with the teams is simply unacceptable Smiley He has been treating F1 like his own plaything and companies with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in F1 simply wouldn't accept their investment being toyed with in this way Smiley

I just hope we have an interesting race Smiley

Is that an attack by McLaren-Mercedes? Or is it just the humiliation that they need fast practice results to show they are worth at least something?

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

I hope Felipe Massa is okay. Looked like something came off Rubens Barrichello's car and somehow hit Felipe Massa's helmet. Felipe had a nasty crash into the tyre wall. Ferrari said he is conscious and talking...

A long, long delay till Q3 and then what a royal mess... no timing data in the last crucial minutes on Q3. Still don't know who is on pole. Could be Fernando Alonso? The most high tech sport was a total shambles...

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

Felippe Massa is ok. they show  a picture of him doing with his arm, ok. Actually Barrichello's Car lost a spring from the back of his car and this element come into Massa's helmet.

Massa was on a speed from 250 km/h, the element must have been on a 50 or 100 km/h. it must have hit him on a speed from 400 km/h

Hamilton 4th - what a comeback while Button left behind in 8th. Surely just a question of time before one of the Red Bull drivers overtakes Jenson's 21 point lead...

How is Brawn Gp's championship , disintegrating! Is it lack of development budget, or are the others just getting better?

Amazing the pace of changes in F1. It's all in the small details.

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

Brown seems to be stuck with a car that was great but that does not have any evolution. The other's are mooving forward and fine tuning there cars on each new race.

I also believe Red Bull will be soon in front, which I am very pleased about.

Good to see Hamilton back in the race.

My thoughts are with massa and family at this difficult time, i hope there isnt any brain damage and that he makes a 100% recovery, lucky the derbis didnt hit the actual eye.

It's a tragic accident i just hope he makes a full recovery....

    God bless...

Can't believe the similarity between the incidents this week involving Surtees and Massa.

They were totally freak incidents, but two in a week is scary...

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

This doesn't look good at all ...

It happens so fast, you can't really see it until they run it in slo-mo a few times, but if you listen you can heard it POP off his helmet.

Figure a spring weighs what, 20lbs x 160 mph = 3,200 lbs of force that hit that one concentrated spot on his head!

    --

...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

Massa to me appears unconscious after he was struck by the spring, his vehicle drives straight into the tire barrier as his head bobs jostled by the car running off/on track, then he slumps forward at tire contact, regaining consciousness thereafter.  The reports of surgery for "bleeding in the skull" are hard to interpret, there just isn't enough information to predict prognosis, but anything from a subdural hematoma to an epidural hematoma are possible, and if brain injury was minimal, recovery is possible.

From all racing fans, our thoughts to Massa and family for a good outcome.

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

Debris striking drivers helmet at speed is one of the most dangerous thing that can happen to a F1 driver, whitness Senna's death, Surtee's death and this latest Massa injury.

Since F1 is open cockpit open wheel racing, covering the wheels to prevent a Senna type injury or to prevent wheel to wheel launches is out of the question, but raising the windscreen higher than the helmet while leaving the top open would still qualify as a open cockpit, what I don't get is why doesn't F1 try that? With a higher windscreen, nothing can get a direct hit on the driver's head, at most it would penetrate/shatter the windscreen before hitting the helmet and that would have taken a lot of energy off the projectile. They have already raised the sides to protect the driver's head from too much lateral movement, isn't it natural to consider a higher windscreen?

Back to the race, wow was Alonso running light, was he that desperate just to get a pole?

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

    Lewis is back!

It was a great race, alltough our thoughts are (& should be) with Felipe Massa

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

Astounding recovery by Mclaren. They have done an absolute fantastic job and a very important improvement for Witmarsh as this is his first season as a captain. Hamilton who was bemused by his chances of winning a race 1-2 months ago, is exhilarated to finally get a taste of his favourite exercise this year -- winning races.

The pit crew did an awful job today fumbling away some very valuable chances of scoring important points. This is the 3-4 time this season that Red Bull has wrecked Vettel's race. Both Red Bull and Brawn just saw their honey moon end. Ferrari and Mclaren are now in the mix at the front and will be a major disturbance for Button and Vettel -- ironically similar to how Vettel and Alonso stole points from Massa and Hamilton at the end of last years season.

For Red Bull, their dilemma of choosing which driver to back has now landed on their table. Vettel has now fallen behind Webber on the drivers' standing and after Valencia will have to promote either of them to nr.1 driver or else they'll risk walking away from the 2009 season empty handed. Hamilton's chances of winning this season are at most, slim but if Mclaren manage to sustain this pace and development then Hamilton can possibly finish 3rd this year -- but that's a long shot. Mclaren were more aiming at just winning one race this year for the sake of damage limitation.

Like I predicted yesterday, Massa would not participate in the race today and I'm doubtful whether he will be returning to his job as a driver. Brain injuries have in most cases, long lasting effects and those include concentration problems, fatigue, slower reaction time and chronic migraine. Given the severity of the impact to his head, he'll unlikely walk away mentally undented. F1 is all concentration and endurance, not to mention heavy G-Forces which all put strain on the brain. I fear that we might have seen the last of Massa as an F1 driver.

This off course opens up a driver vacancy and given that three drivers -- Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg and Kubica -- are eager to abandon their teams, speculation will rumble throughout the next weeks of mid-term break.

FWIW, an F1 car spring would weigh about 2 lb, not 20 lb. Smiley

But where did you get that equation from? Smiley

Weight x speed = force  ?????  Smiley    I don't think that Newton came up with that one. Smiley

Re: 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix

The pit crew mistake of the Renault Team was very dangerous. Lucky we didn't have a repetition of Surtees accident with the flying wheel.

Moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if Alonso uses this mistake, that potentially cost him his best finish so far this year, as a pretext to start flirting with the vacant Ferrari seat. It wouldn't surprise me also, if he moved to Ferrari for the remainder of this season. Ferrari need a driver of some level to gather as many points as possible this season. Their reserve drivers cannot do that.
