Close I lost one of my two mini keys and soon found out that it can only be replaced by a dealer. Since I have an early version of the 2004 mini, the key will cost $192.13 and another $139-$150 to have it program by the dealer. $343 to replace one fricken mini key????

It´s not the key itself that is so expensive but the electronics inside. You certainly haven´t paid 6 $ for a Ferrari key incl. electronics, not even on Ebay... 
THe key I had made for the Ferrari was $6. It was for my 360. The key worked though it did not open and lock the car remotely. I replaced a Cayenne key and I believe it was less than $200.
I believe the reason for the more expensive keys are twofold. First, they are laser cut and second the electronics. I am also told that other than the early 2004 Mini's replacement keys need not be programmed. That saves up to $150.00 of dealer labor.

i love older cars. My key blank was $0.99. I cut the key myself at work :)
But yes new keys are expensive due to electronics but charging $100+ is just a rip off either way you spin it.
