    Should I change?

My current combo is a C2S gen2 cab daily driver and a 996 RS for the track.

I have never quite connected with the cab like I have with previous P cars. The RS is awesome but not a daily driver.

Since getting the 996 RS it has made me think about changing to a 997 GT3 serving as a daily driver and track car plus an older boxster for the few weeks in the year we see sunshine in the UK.

I can't see myself driving the 996 RS daily as it stands out too much.

I could wait for the 997.2 GT3 but I'm not sure about tracking a car close to 100k in value.

I'm guessing that the 997.1 GT3 would not be as much fun as the 996 RS on track.

I nice problem to have I know, but what would you do?Smiley

    Re: Should I change?

If it help any (which it probably doesn't) but I had a 997.1 GT3 on the Silverstone Porsche center handling track last weekend and I frankly was sooo bored when I put my foot down coming out of corners - not much more power than a Carrera.

Conversely, it was very sharp steering through the corners (loved the bucket seats) and very easy to correct on the wet skid pans.  I would guess a RS would be more fun being lighter weight.  I could just about see the GT3 working on the public roads but the roll-cage was a bit much though.  Plus it's very low, no way would you make it over speed bumps.  Personally I would have rather have had the 997.2 C4S that I drove before hand, only a little slower and all the road benefits of 4wd.

PS: my instructor Barry Horne (Porsche Cup winner 2003) said he'd want a Turbo if given the option of all cars across the current range.  You can get 2nd hand Turbos pretty cheap now, and upgrade the suspension for a few grand.  Then you have a road and a track car in one.

    Hi Alex,

Yes, I read about your Bilstein upgrades with much interest. How compliant is the suspension, what would you liken it to?

    Thanks

Get rid of the CarreraS cab and get a newer (not: older) BoxsterS as your daily driver Smiley

Keep the 996 GT3 RS as a trackcar.

    Re: Should I change?

It is a difficult decision, as you already have a 997.2 Carrera S, so the options are not that big......

My options would be the following :

    1) 997.2 GT3 + 987 Boxster S (low mile porsche approved) 2007-2008 model with the 295bhp engine.

    2) 997.2 GT3 + 996 turbo, even a 996 turbo cabriolet (porsche approved), I am sure there a lot of nice priced offers at official dealers

Also getting a 997.1 GT3 isn't a bad idea (as if it was lol ), but just having the new one in the market for a little bit more, may be makes you think about it every time you see one in the road....

It is a very tough decision, as your 996 gt3 rs, is already a masterpiece, and depreciation shouldn't be as big as in any other 911 in some years....plus it is a beauty and sounds amazing....

Also what PJ is a good idea, although I still prefer miles away a second generation Carrera S Cabriolet, and also its re-sale price will be similar to the price you would have to pay for a 987.2 Boxster S with some options.

    Re: Should I change?

I was considering a 3 year old (porsche approved) 2.7 boxster just for those visits to the lake district in the summer with Mrs Panther who would not put up with a GT3 on such a journey. Also, I wouldnt mind it being in a lockup for most of the year as it would not depreciate as much as my current cab.

The 2.7 Boxster is one of those cars that just feels so right on the road (apart from the lack of power). They encourage you to give it a good thrashing as opposed to holding back and rarely getting up to the rev limiter due to traffic constraints. They feel lighter, more compliant and more playful on less rubber.

    Re: Should I change?

From the C2SII cab to the 2.7 Boxster will be too much of a difference (read loss) in power, and you'll miss it.  If you are going for a Boxster, go for the 295bhp 3.4 S.  It's what I had before the C2S Coupe, and I loved every mile I drove in it!  Frankly, I think the 911 cab is too much of a compromise, and the Boxster trumps it for balance and even looks IMO since it is designed ground-up as a convertible.

The beauty of it is that you can set it up to however you like, GT3, GT2, etc.  I have mine on full compliance with bumpy b-roads ie. soft sways front, medium sways rear, close to GT2 ride heights, and close to GT3 road goe alignments.  I'd say apart from the extra weight it drives like a GT3 does, plus from having a MUCH lighter clutch and an atomic bomb under your right foot.  If I do more track work then I'd set my rear sways to stiff, add a bit more camber.  Then I'd get more grip around extreme corners and less understeer when grip does start going...

If you are in my neck of the woods let me know and I'll take you out for a spin.  I would spoil you for all other cars though Smiley

    Re: Should I change?

It massively depends on your driving intentions. What´d be the reason to replace the 996 RS in the first place? If one would improve the car (more so than driving skills), I´d suggest modifications to suspension settings and a shorter final drive that is available via Porsche Motorsport. After all, clearing out the interior would have an effect as well.

I like PJ´s idea, replace the 997 Cab with a decent 987 Boxster or, if you´d fancy something different, a 2nd hand V8 Vantage Roadster.

    Re: Should I change?

997 turbo (modded) and V8 Vantage spider is my dream combo. Almost made it real a couple of months ago..

    Re: Should I change?

Arshad, I agree that the 911 cab is too much of a compromise. The 3.4 boxster on PASM is more stiffly sprung, less compliant for longer journeys.

Alex, the sports exhaust would help a lot but maybe not enough as the steering feel has lost someting over 997.1. Maybe a 997.1 cab or a 996 cab would be better.

Ferdie, I am very tempted to keep the 996 RS as it does everything I want for the track. I would like to use it as my daily driver too but I prefer a more understated car for my daily use, hence the reason to replace it with a standard GT3 in quiet colours.

I've owned a vantage roadster before. It appeals on an emotional level but lacks the driver involvement that the Porsche delivers so well. I'd rate the Vantage below the cab I'm looking to replace.

GT, good luck with your dream.

My dream is my Turbo, a white LP560-4 Spyder and a black RS6 Avant

ie. lower than 500 BHP is too slow for me now - talk about power corrupting!!

I understand your point of view. You are not the first one to complain about the lack in steering feel on the 997.2 Carrera.. I assume that it should be able to solve the issue with modifications on suspension (settings) yet I am not sure if the benefits outweigh the effort.

If you have owned the V8 Vantage before you might want to go the same route again, from my understanding the Mk.1 versions should be available at considerable prices nowadays. If I were you I´d consider a 987.1, preferrably in S-configuration. Alternatively, there should be quite a batch of 997.1 Cabs available and since I don´t expect sales to improve substantially in the upcoming months, you might get a good deal on such a car. The same dilemma might occur on resale later on though.

So when you say you are keeping the RS, how exactly? It's written off no?

Surely you will get the insurance money (but with a huge excess I assume) and use that to get another car?

White is a pretty quiet color.  You could remove the decals and add a second set of wheels in standard Silver or Black.  The decals could easily be replaced at a later date with a new set.
