997TT with a mesh screen in front grille

I got tired of having to fish out objects from within the front spoiler area in my 997TT plus a friend recently had his radiator punctured by a solid object of some type. I'd been thinking of getting it done but it was finally time to do it. Larry with his "twin" car also had it done too. We both had a mesh screen made by a local tuner shop and powdercoated black.

What I like about it is that it's not that obvious and would be hard to see when within the car. I considered getting a hexagonal type but in the end opted to go with these instead. I also couldn't find anyone out there that sells these pieces. I found one but it requires removing the plastic vanes and IMHO it didn't look very good.

    Can you see it?

Very happy with the end results and would highly recommend anyone looking to protect their radiator to get this mod done. It was relatively cheap.

Looks good. And I am also very often trying to get the things out from there . I had once a dead bird !!!!

BTW : is that  a radar detector that shows out fromt the grills ?

Great idea Jason!!  I always struggle to clean out my front grills, especially the bits right in the far corners.

Well, it won't help for the inevitable loads of bugs and dirt, but still a great mod!

    Great!

I like those mods that bring a benefit but won't change the original look of the car.

Re: 997TT with a mesh screen in front grille

Eunice, it actually helps a LOT! I've driven a bit already and guess what I don't find myself having to fish out objects and such from the front spoiler anymore! :D

Gnil, what you see is actually the laser diffusers. The radar sensor is hidden behind the bumper.

Excellent mod. I need to do this also.  Not only to prevent trash collection, but for pebble damage protection as well.

    1. How and where are the mesh pieces attached to the car please? By wire or glue?

    2. Anything unusual or difficult during the installation? I assume you had to remove the front bumper?

    3. Did you powder coat the mesh? Grin.

    TIA

Re: 997TT with a mesh screen in front grille

    Can,

As I mentioned in my original post, I had them powdercoated black. They're actually attached to the inside of the bumper (which had to be removed) via screws so they're on securely. I didn't get a picture of it being attached so I couldn't show you that. It's not difficult, just time consuming since you have to bend and cut all the pieces to fit properly. Porsche should have installed this from the very start, IMHO. Leaving the radiators exposed was a bad move.

Re: 997TT with a mesh screen in front grille

Excellent Idea. Smiley I'm glad you did it. Here's my discovery when looking into there. The radiator seems very fragile, not the heat exchanger ribs, but the channels which circulate coolant seem to be a very light gauge. This seemed almost punctured by stone while normal highway driving (see photo).

BTW, regarding the "plastic vanes," how do those come out? I was thinking they are a "destruction" removal, i.e a one-way snap-in installation. Can you get those out without breaking them or the cowling/bumper? I wanted to remove them, to simplify,  just to see if I like it better. Smiley

MMD: I think Jason took out the whole bumper and put the mesh in behind the plastic "WINGS"

Yeah, that makes sense, thanks. Taking off the bumper, I think I have a DIY hack for that. Never did it though. I know it's really easy to remove the grille pieces with a mini-hacksaw: Smiley
