I have to chose the GTR for its ability to generate more internet typing than any other car of 2008.
That doesn't make it the most important.. just the most overrated
My vote goes to Tesla too actually. Sporty, fun, fast, electric, AMERICAN, cool and priced well. We need more Tesla's and less Pruis's on the roads.
2005 Ford Focus S, 5spd
1986 Porsche 944, 5spd
AUM:
And why. Any class or type of car. "Important" is whatever that means to you.

If we would agree on the GTR we need to highlight and stress the word "was" in the question "What was the most important car" as this little word marks that some things change a lot as time goes by and some people get wiser (I am talking of Nissan fans here ).

Honda FCX Clarity (yes I know it first appeared in late 2007). Quite possibly the most important car ever.
The Tesla is quite something too. But price is way too high, reliability seems to be catastrophic, charging takes way too long, etc.
Lars997:
Thats actually a great question. The more I think he harder I do to select a great - new - car in 2008!
I really can only add my vote to the Tesla, I guess indeed this is a huge step forward to the next generation Sport Cars.
My vote goes to Tesla too, its first step into the future.

I believe Daimler just bought into the Tesla so it should be high on the list. Without investors the company was headed for bankruptcy. Also, it has had some serious management issues which could compromise the reliability of the car.
It had its financial issues getting back under control - but the management issues (egos + disorganization + proper supply chain management), that's what was dragging the company down.
However, now that Detroit is purging so much talent Tesla would be VERY WISE to pick-up some senior talent to handle the nuts and bolts of the business. That stuff is the same across industries and doesn't necessarily bring contamination from Detroit think.
...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!
W8MM:
OK, I'll give it a try.
The Tesla Roadster: 12.7 in the quarter mile without changing gears!
+1 Tesla Roadster and the Fisker Karma but I think this one came in just this year.... Both show to the world that driving an electric car you don´t have to look like an idiot into a wash machine.. but actually be more stylish than most actual cars.
