Putting some factory drivers in customer cars does not signify taking a motorsport seriously. That is not to say that they didn't take this particualr race seriously. The point is that Porsche's motorsport effort lately does not even begin to compare with that of Audi.

The Nürburgring 24h race has always been dominated (in terms of numbers) by professional and amateur teams without factory backup. Manufacturers have come and gone, BMW with the 320d and M3 GTR or Audi and Opel with their DTM racers. All of them backed out after they´d won and therefore met their plans.
Manthey has been the particular Porsche team with significant factory support and considering the business connections it doesn´t come as a surprise. I do believe that this is the biggest effort Porsche will put into this racing series, furthermore the RSRs at Le Mans are raced by indepedent teams as well, aren´t they?
If the CEO or head of motorsports races their own cars seems irrelevant to me, it certainly is a nice but indecisive feature to me. Stryzek (of Opel) has been racing at the VLN and 24h for quite some time but this doesn´t make them produce any better racecars...
